What you need to know about the iPhone 17e

  • The budget-model iPhone 17e gets Apple's latest A19 chip, but runs a 4-core GPU (versus the 5-core version in the standard iPhone 17).
  • The phone will run you $599 for 256GB, which is the same price as last year's iPhone 16e, but with double the base storage, a 48MP Fusion camera, and MagSafe wireless charging added.
  • Colors include black, white, and soft pink.
  • Pre-orders begin March 4, with the phone officially in stores March 11.

Apple just announced the iPhone 17e, and for just $599, it's the iPhone many people have been waiting for. It comes with the same A19 chip as the full iPhone 17, a hefty 256GB of storage, and (finally) MagSafe wireless charging. But "cheaper" and "better value" aren't always the same thing, and the answer here depends almost entirely on what you're upgrading from.

That said, I think the iPhone 17e is a solid choice to take advantage of most of the best parts of Apple's ecosystem for a fraction of the usual price.

What the iPhone 17e gets you for $599

The iPhone 17e offers a significant upgrade over last year's iPhone 16e256GB of storage now comes standard, up from the 16e's 128GB entry point. That alone makes the 17e a better deal at the same price; 256GB is plenty of room for years of photos, apps, and downloads without constantly managing space.

Apple also finally added MagSafe wireless charging to the "e" lineup—something the iPhone 16e conspicuously skipped. That means you can now use the entire ecosystem of MagSafe accessories (wallets, car mounts, chargers, etc.) that have become standard gear for millions of iPhone users. Wireless charging tops out at 15W via MagSafe, and the phone supports fast wired charging via USB-C (up to 50% in roughly 30 minutes).

On performance, the 17e runs the same A19 chip found in the rest of the iPhone 17 family, paired with 8GB of RAM. Apple also upgraded the cellular modem from C1 to C1X, a chip that delivers roughly twice the 5G speeds of its predecessor while using 30% less battery. For everyday use, this phone will feel fast and current for years.

Pro tip: The trade-in math is worth running

Apple is offering up to $599 in carrier credit when you trade in an iPhone 13 toward the 17e, which would bring your out-of-pocket cost to essentially $0. Even an iPhone 11 trade-in gets you up to $400 back. If you're sitting on a phone from 2021 or older, this is one of the most cost-effective upgrade paths Apple has offered in years.

iPhone 17e vs. iPhone 17: What the $200 gap actually buys you

The standard iPhone 17 costs $799 and includes a few upgrades that aren't easy to dismiss. The biggest is the display: the iPhone 17 runs at 120Hz with ProMotion (smoother scrolling and animations) while the 17e is capped at 60Hz. The 17 also gets a brighter screen—3,000 nits peak versus 1,200 on the 17e—which makes a real difference in direct sunlight.

The camera gap is more nuanced. The 17e uses a single 48MP Fusion lens that Apple calls a "2-in-1" system because it delivers optical-quality 2x zoom. The iPhone 17 has a dual-camera setup with an additional ultra-wide lens, which is useful for shooting wide architectural shots or environmental portraits. But if your photography is mostly people, pets, and everyday moments, the single-lens iPhone 17e will hold its own.

What this boils down to: Who should pay the extra $200?

The iPhone 17 makes the most sense for people who use their phone for heavy media consumption (streaming, gaming), outdoor photography, or anyone who's genuinely frustrated by a sluggish display. For everyone else—light gaming, social media, messaging, and occasional photos—the iPhone 17e covers those needs at a $200 discount.

iPhone 17e vs. Android at $499: What you give up by going Apple

This is the comparison Apple would rather you not make. The Google Pixel 9a ($499) and Samsung Galaxy A56 ($499) both undercut the iPhone 17e by $100 and include features the 17e doesn't offer. Both Android phones feature 120Hz displays, dual- or triple-rear cameras, and larger batteries (5,000+ mAh versus the 17e's 4,005 mAh).

The Pixel 9a, in particular, has become the benchmark for budget smartphone cameras thanks to Google's computational photography. It also ships with seven years of software updates, one of the longest support windows in the industry for any phone at any price. The Galaxy A56 counters with a larger 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display and 45W fast charging.

What the 17e has that neither Android phone can match: Face ID, seamless iMessage and AirDrop integration, Apple Intelligence features, and the iOS ecosystem. If you're already deep in the Apple rabbit hole, the iPhone 17e's $100 premium over Android is easy to justify. If you're not locked in, the Pixel 9a and Galaxy A56 are legitimately competitive phones for less money.

T-Mobile's $1,000 savings deal: What to know before you switch

T-Mobile currently has a rock-solid offer running: $1,000 off any iPhone 17 model (including the 17e) when you switch to the carrier and activate a new line on the Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plan, no trade-in required. That math is straightforward: On a $599 phone, $1,000 in credits means the device is effectively free, with cash left over.

The catch (and there's always a catch!) is that this discount comes in the form of monthly bill credits over 24 months, not as an immediate price reduction at checkout. If you leave T-Mobile before those 24 months are up, you lose the remaining credits and owe the balance on the phone. The Experience Beyond plan also starts at a premium monthly rate, so factor that into your total cost calculation.

Expert tip: Bill credits vs. instant savings

A "$1,000 off" carrier promotion and "$1,000 off" at checkout are very different things. Bill credits require you to stay on a specific plan for the full credit term. Before signing up, calculate your total 24-month cost (plan + remaining device balance) against what you'd pay buying the phone unlocked and running it on a cheaper carrier. For many people, the math still favors the carrier deal—but it's worth confirming first.

Is the iPhone 17e worth it?

For the right person, yes. If you're coming from an iPhone 11 or older, the 17e is a substantial, future-proof upgrade at a fair price, especially with trade-in offers that can bring the out-of-pocket cost close to zero. The A19 chip, 256GB of storage, MagSafe, and the updated C1X modem are all meaningful upgrades that will keep this phone relevant for years.

If you're already on an iPhone 14 or 15 and don't feel like your phone is slowing you down, the upgrade is harder to justify unless you're chasing MagSafe accessories or the extra storage. And if you're not committed to the Apple ecosystem, the Pixel 9a and Galaxy A56 offer genuinely competitive specs at $100 less.

Pre-orders open March 4 and the phone is in stores on March 11. Before you do anything else, run your trade-in number through Apple and compare it to what your carrier is offering; those two figures can vary by $100 or more, and 2 minutes of research can save you real money. If you're eyeing T-Mobile's $1,000 deal, pull up the plan pricing first and do the 24-month math before you commit. The deal is good. The plan commitment is long.
