Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Price

The Samsung Galaxy S23 starts at $799. This is the same cost that the S22 originally retailed at, so Samsung hasn’t increased prices between generations. With the release of the S23, the S22 dropped down to a starting price of $699.

Galaxy S23 $799
Galaxy S22 $699

The fact that the S22 is less expensive makes it the clear winner of this category. Plus, the S22 can do many of the same features as the S23 even though it’s an older device. So, you’re still getting great Samsung capabilities, just at a lower price point.

Winner: Galaxy S22

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Display

Both devices offer a 6.1-inch display made of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Plus, they have the same screen resolution and refresh rate. The S23 does offer a brighter display at 1,750 nits compared to the 1,300 nits of the S22, but both of these devices are brighter than the iPhone 14’s 1,200 nits. Other than brightness, the real upgrade for the S23 is the screen is more power efficient, so it uses less battery while still delivering similar performance to the S22.

The specs for both the S23 and S22 displays are mostly similar, but we’re giving the S23 display the win because it is brighter and more power efficient.

Winner: Galaxy S23

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Processors

The Samsung Galaxy S22 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This is a solid processor that provides excellent performance, but it drains the phone’s battery quickly.

The Galaxy S23 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor. The “for Galaxy” tag means this chip was specifically designed for Samsung’s Galaxy phone line. It’s a powerful processor that beats the metrics of the Gen 1 while using less battery power overall. Because of that, we’re giving the S23 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 the win for this category.

Winner: Galaxy S23

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Cameras

Cameras are one of the most important features of Samsung phones. Both the Galaxy S23 and S22 have solid camera systems that produce excellent image quality. Check out the camera system comparisons below:

Galaxy S22
Main camera 50MP 50MP
Telephoto camera 10MP 10MP
Ultrawide camera 12MP 12MP
Selfie camera 12MP 10MP

One of the most important factors to note is that the S23 and S22 have the same rear camera system. The 50MP main, 10MP telephoto, and 12MP ultrawide cameras are the same hardware on both devices. So, what’s different? The S23 has gotten software improvements that help with low-light photography and produces smoother videos than the S22.

The only hardware upgrade for the base S23 is an improved 12MP selfie camera. Most of the big upgrades were reserved for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which sports a 200MP camera and a new sensor for Nightograhy.

The low-light imaging capabilities and improved selfie camera of the S23 are the main reason we’re giving it the win for this category.

Winner: Galaxy S23

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Battery life

The S22 includes a 3,700mAh battery, while the S23 includes a 3,900mAh. On size alone, the S23’s battery is around 5% bigger, but that’s not the full story. Other upgrades to the S23 series, like the new Snapdragon processor and display features, also help lower power consumption.

The S23 has a larger battery and is more efficient overall, so it takes the win here.

Winner: Galaxy S23

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Design and Colors

The design of the S23 follows closely with the S22. However, there is one major change to note and a few color differences.

The entire Galaxy S23 series comes in four base colors: phantom black, green, cream, and lavender. There are also some online-exclusive colors—graphite, sky blue, lime, and red—if you order directly from the Samsung.com store. The biggest change for the S23 is the elimination of the camera bump on the back of the device. Instead, the S23 and S23+ have a flat sleek back like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The S22 series comes in five basic colors: Phantom White, Phantom Black, Green, Bora Purple, and Pink Gold. There are also some Samsung.com exclusive colors, like Graphite and Sky Blue, but they are more difficult to obtain since this is an older series. The S22 series has the camera-bump design that has dominated the Galaxy series for the past few years, so it’s more of a traditional option.

With both of these devices, there’s no superior design since the S23 is modeled on the S22.

 Winner: Tie

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. S22: Verdict

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S23 is the superior device. It offers newer camera capabilities, a faster processor, a brighter display, and includes a longer battery life. It is currently at the top of the Samsung lineup until the next generation comes out.

That said, there’s a lot to love about the S22. It offers the same camera hardware as the S23, many similar display specs, and comes in colors the S23 does not. Most importantly, it’s also cheaper than the S23.

If you want the top Samsung phone on the market right now, look no further than the Galaxy S23. However, if you want great Samsung features, but don’t want to pay full price for them, the Galaxy S22 is a great option.
