The free plan held up better than I expected

I was skeptical about Proton's free plan, and initially thought it was going to be a scam or basically a useless VPN that slowed me down to glacial speeds. But I was quickly proven wrong.

Most free VPNs either throttle your speeds aggressively, fill the interface with ads, or sell your browsing data to third parties. But Proton guarantees it doesn't do any of that.

The free plan gives you access to servers in ten countries—including the US, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, and Switzerland—with no data cap or ads. I usually get around 150Mbps speeds on my phone when using my cellular network. While connected to Proton's free VPN, speeds only dropped slightly, to around 130Mbps—a dip that was unnoticeable during normal use. Browsing, messaging, checking email, and pulling up booking confirmations all worked without any lag.

The app itself is really easy to use. Just pick a country from the list, tap connect, and you're protected. There's no overcomplicated settings menu or confusing dashboard. Proton is beginner-friendly enough that I'd hand it to someone who has never used a VPN before and trust them to figure it out.

In fact, for a traveler who just needs basic protection on public Wi-Fi without committing to a monthly subscription, Proton is hard to beat.

No torrenting while streaming

The free tier doesn't include streaming servers—that's a feature Proton reserves for its premium plans. If you want to change your Netflix region or access content from another country, you'll need to upgrade.

Free users are also limited to one device at a time, so if you're traveling with a partner and want both phones covered, you'd each need a separate account. And with how easy it is to set up and use, that's not much of a downside.

Access to ten available server countries is sufficient for basic protection and not having to worry about network congestion and traffic. But if you need a connection from a specific country for work or banking purposes, the free plan may not have access to it. For most travelers, though, the selection is more than enough to get the job done.
