In the realm of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), Visible and Google Fi stand out for distinct reasons. Visible, under Verizon's umbrella, boasts unparalleled coverage, especially in rural areas. Meanwhile, Google Fi harnesses the strengths of T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular networks, showing promise in metropolitan 5G coverage.

While Visible tempts with its competitively priced unlimited data plans and generous mobile hotspot offerings, Google Fi counters with its pocket-friendly limited data package and expansive family plan discounts. But which MVNO truly aligns with your needs? Dive in as we dissect and compare their offerings across several key metrics.

Visible vs. Google Fi summary

Visible does win out in a handful of these categories, but Google Fi manages to tie in others. While it may seem like Visible is the clear overall winner, we think there’s more to the story.

Visible vs. Google Fi: Who has better coverage?

Visible operates on Verizon’s network. Of course, that’s no surprise as Verizon is Visible’s parent company. Google Fi operates on the T-Mobile network as well as US Cellular’s network.

Despite claims you might hear from other carriers and their 5G networks, the fact remains that Verizon’s network is still the king of coverage. This is because 4G LTE is still the dominant network technology—it’s everywhere and most people don’t even have 5G-compatible phones yet. Verizon’s coverage dominates most corners of the country and has especially strong service in rural areas compared to the competing networks.

T-Mobile’s network isn’t anything to sneeze at, though. In metropolitan areas, you’re going to get strong coverage, but you might not get the best service in rural areas. T-Mobile does have the better 5G network coverage if that’s something you’re looking for.

Winner: Visible

Visible vs. Google Fi: Price

If we’re comparing like plans, Visible wins hands down when it comes to price. Its original Visible plan at $25 is a steal for an unlimited cell phone plan on the Verizon network, and its enhanced $35 Visible+ offering provides even more bang for your buck with premium data and faster 5G speeds. Discounted annual plans are also available for Visible at $275/year and Visisble+ at $395/year. Google Fi’s comparable unlimited plan starts at $65/month and that doesn’t even include mobile hotspot. Visible’s plan comes with unlimited hotspot.

Things get just a little bit trickier when you factor in that Google Fi offers a limited cell phone plan at a cheaper price. You can get 15GB of mobile data for just $20/month. That’s a pretty great price for that much data.

Google Fi
Google Fi
4 out of 5 overall

  • Strong 5G coverage

  • Expensive unlimited plans

Given that Visible has a great deal for unlimited but Google Fi also has an excellent deal for its limited plan, we’ll call this one a tie.

Winner: Tie

Visible vs. Google Fi: Perks

MVNOs don’t typically offer the best perks. Visible and Google Fi aren’t exceptions to this rule. Neither offers very much more than basic cell phone and mobile data service. Each carrier offers free SIM and international texting or calling to Mexico and/or Canada. Neither carrier offers any subscriptions perks.

As you can see, Visible and Google Fi offer pretty much identical perks. You won't be shocked to see that we are calling this category a tie.

Winner: Tie

Visible vs. Google Fi: High-speed data

When it comes to high-speed data and these two carriers, it’s a story of two different styles of cell phone plans.

With Visible, there are three different options for how to approach your data speeds. On the $25 base plan, you get to use as much unlimited high-speed data as you can with a bit of a caveat. During times of heavy network traffic, Visible will temporarily lower your speeds. This is so that other customers, probably on Verizon’s high-end plans, can get priority access to the network’s bandwidth.

On both the $35 Visible+plan and $45 Visible+ Pro plan, you get unlimited "premium" data that will keep your speeds at their highest, regardless of traffic. You won't be slowed down at any time.

Google Fi’s plans, on the other hand, offer premium data limits with a hard cap—meaning once you meet those limits, your speeds WILL slow down (rather than having the potential to slow). On its unlimited plans, you’ll get 30GB, 50GB, or 100GB of full-speed data before your speeds will slow, while the Flexible pay-as-you-go plan provides 15GB of high-speed data—period. After those 15GB are used up, you'll need to purchase more data.

The problem with comparing the two is the unknowns involved. Namely, we don’t know exactly what Visible defines as heavy traffic. If you opt for the cheapest Visible plan, you may see slower speeds. That said, in our hands-on experience with Visible, speeds never seem to horribly slow down, and the Visible+ or Visible+ Pro plans offer a unlimited full-speed data, clearly trouncing Google Fi.

Winner: Visible

Visible vs. Google Fi: Mobile hotspot data

MVNOs like Visible and Google Fi don’t typically offer the best options for mobile hotspot. Visible does include unlimited hotspot with its plans. However, they do limit hotspot speeds to 5Mbps for their basic plan, 10Mbps for the Visible+ plan, and 15Mbps on the Visible+ Pro plan. Independent of which plan you get, you are limited to just one tethered device at a time.

Google Fi includes generous high-speed hotspot allowances with its plans. Unlimited Premium includes 50GB of high-speed hotspot data, and Unlimited Standard offers 25GB hotspot data. However, Google Fi's Unlimited Essentials base plan doesn't include tethering.

Which is better? Data speeds that aren’t the fastest, but it is enough to support the average users’ demands. If you’re an avid gamer or looking to watch video in 4K UHD, Visible’s hotspot should suffice. Google Fi gives you faster hotspot data, but also a limit. If you prioritize speeds for your hotspot Google Fi is the way to go. If you need as much data as possible, Visible has the plan for you.

This is a category that heavily depends on what type of user you are. So, we’re calling another tie here.

Winner: Tie

Visible vs. Google Fi: Phone compatibility

Both Google Fi and Visible are compatible with many of today’s big-name cell phones. However, it’s important to note that Google Fi is still in beta with the iPhone, meaning you’ll have to take extra steps to set up your iPhone and might not get the full benefits of the carrier’s service. Google Fi, not surprisingly, works best with Android (Google’s mobile operating system) phones and features special software that automatically connects these phones to its best network and Wi-Fi hotspots.

Because Google Fi isn’t fully compatible with the iPhone, where Visible has support for a wide range of devices, we’ll call this for Visible.

 Winner: Visible

Visible vs. Google Fi: Family plans

Taking advantage of family-plan discounts is one of the best ways to save money on your cell phone plan. MVNOs don’t usually have the best family plan discounts, but Google Fi does.

Google Fi offers multi-line/family discounts for each of its three plans.

Google Fi family plans
Plan 1 line 2 lines 3 lines 4 lines
Flexible $20 $18 $17 $17
Unlimited Essentials $35 $30 $27 $23
Unlimited Standard $50 $40 $30 $25
Unlimited Premium $65 $55 $45 $40

Visible used to offer a multi-line discount called "Party Pay" that allowed each family or group member to be in charge of their own bill. The more people who were on your Party Pay, the cheaper the price was per line. Sadly, Party Pay has disappeared—a huge disadvantage for Visible, as it was one of the more competitive family plan structures we had seen. So in the absence of a replacement anytime soon, we have to give the win to Google Fi.

 Winner: Google Fi

Visible vs. Google Fi: Customer service

Look, as much as some carriers like to brag about their customer service, there's really no such thing as a cell phone provider that has overall excellent reviews regarding customer service. This is understandable. By the time people are reaching out to customer service, they are usually already pretty upset, and the people who do get their problems solved are probably too happy to take time out to write out positive reviews.

One thing to note about both Visible and Google Fi is that neither company has brick-and-mortar storefronts. They both do all of their business online. This means that any contact you’ll have with their customer service will be online or by phone. That doesn't mean activation is hard. Both companies will send you a SIM card and instructions for easy activation.
