YNAB You Need a Budget app logo

I tried spreadsheets, sticky notes, and a handful of apps before finding You Need A Budget—and none of them changed how I actually spent money. YNAB revolutionized my understanding of money. It saved me $3,000 in the first year, while helping me max out my retirement contributions for the first time.

It isn't the cheapest option at $14.99/month, and YNAB openly admits there is a learning curve, but it's worth the investment. YNAB is built around zero-based budgeting: a method that requires you to assign every dollar of your income to a specific job before you spend any of it. That way, you can account for every cent you spend.

Available for iPhone and Android
 Price: $14.99/month (or $109/year)
Free one-year subscription for college students.

What makes YNAB so great?

YNAB beats all other budgeting apps because it shows you what you're spending and where you can cut back to save money. This app uses your spending patterns to make you a customized, smart budget with no leftover spare cash—every dollar has a purpose.

Zero-based budgeting uses a formula: Your monthly income minus your assigned categories equals zero. Every dollar gets a specific destination before you spend it, like rent, groceries, student loans, an emergency fund, and a realistic amount for the things you actually enjoy. Nothing sits unassigned in a checking account for impulsive buys.

YNAB's methodology is different from isolated expense tracking, which tells you where your money went after the fact. Zero-based budgeting tells your money where to go in advance. The shift sounds minor, but the behavioral difference is significant: You stop spending by default and start spending by decision.

Not sure how to update your apps?

Keeping your apps up to date ensures you're always getting the latest features, bug fixes, and security improvements. Learn how to update the apps on your iPhone and your Android. It takes less time than you think.

What does the YNAB app do?

YNAB connects to your bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and investment accounts and pulls every transaction into a single budget. You can view spending patterns across months, see where your habits are costing you, and project what would happen if you redirected even $50 a month toward a specific goal. YNAB's forward visibility is what changes financial behavior, not just the financial tracking.

YNAB also nudges you to budget ahead for unexpected expenses. You won't be caught by surprise when you have to pay for your car registration, annual subscriptions, or a holiday trip. Set aside a small amount each month toward those categories so the bill never feels like a surprise.

YNAB helped me spot one easy win: My phone bill

After linking my accounts, YNAB showed me I was paying for a premium carrier plan I barely used. Switching to a T-Mobile network MVNO can easily save you $35/month for the same service.

Free for a full year if you're still in school

YNAB offers college students a free one-year subscription, but you still have to be enrolled. If you're in your final year of school and about to start earning a salary, signing up before graduation means you get twelve months to build the habit at no cost. Do not wait until after you graduate to take advantage of that offer—because it won't stick around for you.

But be prepared to start learning. YNAB recommends spending time with their onboarding content and offers a 34-day free trial to get used to the app itself. The $3,000 I saved in my first year more than covered the annual subscription.
