- The plan is available May 27, 2026.
AT&T is launching a new, customizable phone plan called Build-A-Plan. The plan lets you start with a base rate and layer in the features you want. Plus, you can adjust them every month depending on what you actually need based on real-time usage.
If you've ever paid for an unlimited plan and spent half the month on Wi-Fi, you already understand the problem Build-A-Plan is trying to solve. As an antidote to bloated wireless bundles that charge you for features you didn't ask for, AT&T's newest addition gives you more flexibility. According to AT&T's official announcement, the entry price is lower than anything T-Mobile or Verizon currently offers at the base tier.
What is AT&T Build-A-Plan and how does it work?
Build-A-Plan starts with a base plan which costs $15/month, and includes the essentials: unlimited talk, text, and 1GB of mobile data. You then add features on top depending on what you need. If you're traveling and need more hotspot data, you add it. If you're home all month and barely touch cellular data, you strip it back. You can change your plan monthly to better suit your usage. There's no contract locking you in to a fixed configuration.
The plan runs on AT&T's own network, so you still get the same great coverage. You can sign up for Build-A-Plan on May 27, the day it officially launches. But keep in mind that it's available exclusively online and requires an unlocked phone with eSIM capability. It is currently limited to one line per account for new customers.
Is my phone eSIM Compatible?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card built directly into your phone, which means you can switch carriers without swapping a physical SIM card. Most phones released in the last three years support eSIM, including all iPhones from iPhone 14 onward and most flagship Android devices. If your phone was purchased in the U.S. after 2022, there's a good chance it's already eSIM-capable.
AT&T Build-A-Plan pricing: How much does it cost?
Here's how the pricing breaks down. You start with the base plan and add from there:
AT&T Build-A-Plan pricing
| Feature | Option | Monthly add-on cost |
|---|---|---|
| Base plan | Unlimited talk, text + 1GB data | $15/mo |
| Data upgrade | 5GB data | +$5/mo |
| 15GB data | +$10/mo | |
| Unlimited data with UHD streaming | +$35/mo | |
| Hotspot data | Up to 50GB | Up to +$20/mo |
| Taxes and fees not included | ||
The data upgrade replaces the base 1GB rather than adding on top of it. So if you add the 15GB option, you get 15GB total, not 16GB. On the hotspot side, you can add up to 50GB of hotspot data for an additional $20/month, which is useful for anyone who tethers a laptop or tablet regularly.
What does Build-A-Plan cost if you use 10GB per month?
Build-A-Plan's data tiers jump from 5GB to 15GB, with no 10GB option in between. If you typically use around 10GB per month (like most Americans), you'd need to select the 15GB tier at an extra $10/month. Your total bill would come to $25/month before taxes and fees. That's still a competitive price for a major carrier, and the extra 5GB gives you a buffer so you're not scrambling at the end of the month.
Who can sign up for AT&T Build-A-Plan?
There are a few requirements to be aware of before you sign up. Build-A-Plan launches with some specific conditions attached:

How AT&T Build-A-Plan compares to T-Mobile and Verizon
AT&T is positioning Build-A-Plan directly against T-Mobile and Verizon, claiming it has the lowest entry price of any major carrier. At $15/month for the base tier, that claim holds up. T-Mobile's most affordable plan starts at $25/month and Verizon's entry-level prepaid options begin at $30/month for comparable features.
But the biggest (and most attractive) feature is this plan's flexibility. Most major carrier plans lock you into a fixed feature set. Build-A-Plan is designed to let you reconfigure your plan each month without penalty, which is a genuinely different approach from what T-Mobile and Verizon currently offer at the entry level.
However, it's not for everyone. It's currently single-line only, which puts it out of reach for families. T-Mobile and Verizon both have top-notch multi-line options at this price point that Build-A-Plan can't yet match.
