The prepaid MVNO market is a crowded place.
With so many competing carriers, it can be tough to differentiate one company from another, apart from which network they operate on. FreeUP has joined this competitive landscape, debuting service across the United States.
FreeUP offers unrestricted 4G LTE cell service on America's "top GSM network," presumably AT&T. There are at least nine other carriers that run on AT&T, including big players like Cricket and smaller ones like FreedomPop. So how does FreeUP plan to set itself apart?
Two words: rewards program. The company is giving its customers the opportunity lower their monthly bills significantly by participating in a variety of tasks, from taking online surveys to downloading mobile apps.
Here's a rundown of the ways to save:
- Local offers: dine and shop in your community by registering credit/debit card and using the FreeUP rewards app to locate participating locations
- Online surveys: it is easy to qualify for 2-3 surveys per week, with earnings based on type and length
- Online shopping: earn Rewards Dollars when you make online purchases via links to participating online partners
- Download mobile apps: earn rewards by downloading apps and signing up for deals
- Coupons: earn as much around $7 per month by downloading coupons
- Watch videos and play games: there's no limit to the amount you can earn by watching videos and playing games daily
- Refer family and friends: they’ll receive $5 when they join and you’ll get $1 plus 5% of what they earn each month
All of these savings opportunities are available via the FreeUP Rewards app, which you can sign up for and download when you start service. According to the company, subscribers are able earn between $10-$25 a month in rewards, making plans "as close to free as possible.
FreeUP offers four core cell phone plans, plus options to add more data up to 7GB:

You can bring your own phone and number to FreeUP for service, or purchase a device from the carrier. A range of phones are available, including flagships like the Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9 and the iPhone 8 and X.
FreeUP is offering the first month for "free" when you purchase one of their SIM cards, though the SIM is $10, so you're shelling out something.
Is FreeUP for me?
There are a couple of things you'll want to keep in mind with FreeUP, most importantly you can earn rewards to lower your monthly plan costs, every month
One, since the plans top out at 7GB/month, they're best suited to light and medium data users. If you're a compulsive streamer, FreeUP is likely not for you. On the upside, if you are price sensitive their rewards program could help.
Two, if you're planning on bringing your phone to FreeUP's network, you'll want to confirm its compatibility first.
Three, if coverage is important to you, FreeUP is a good option. AT&T's network--the one FreeUP runs on--consistently ranks #2 in nationwide coverage tests, behind Verizon. It actually bests Verizon's coverage in many parts of the country.
