When it comes to choosing cell phone carriers, coverage, pricing and customer service can all factor in. Wing is a cell phone provider that hopes to tackle all of these, with affordable prices to go along with their excellent customer service and solid network.
What Is Wing?
Wing (or Wing Alpha, or Wing Tel) is a relatively new MVNO that offers prepaid cell phone plans on the Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T 4G and 5G networks. Wing’s goal is to eliminate two major pain points for mobile users: expensive plans and poor customer service. To accomplish this, Wing offers a selection of affordable plans, and the assurance that you’ll always get a live person when calling in. Or as Wing puts it, “No robots here.”
Strengths
- Strong coverage on all three major U.S. networks
- Unlimited talk and text with all plans
- Emphasis on customer service
- Competitive pricing for unlimited plan
- Mix and match family plans
Weaknesses
- Lack of customer reviews and feedback due to being fairly new
- International options can be expensive
- Lack of midrange data options
- Prices are a bit high for low-data plans
Wing cell phone plans and pricing
Wing offers six different cell phone plans. Their Flip Phone plan is designed for CDMA-compatible 3G phones, while their 500MB Data plan is available for GSM-compatible basic phones. The remaining four Wing plans are designed for most modern smartphones with LTE coverage depending heavily on availability in your area.

Best Wing phone plan
At just $55/month, Wing’s Unlimited plan is a bargain. This is especially true if you can get on the AT&T network (more on this below). It’s even better given Wing’s deprioritization threshold of 22GB—this means 22GB of your data will be at LTE speeds, and any data usage over that limit may be slowed down due to network congestion. It’s rare to see an unlimited plan from an MVNO have such a generous threshold. Most prepaid unlimited plans don’t come with a guaranteed allotment of high-speed data and instead slow you down during network congestion no matter how much (or little) data you’ve used.
Wing plans for light data users
Wing offers multiple cell phone plans for light users ranging from 1GB to 5GB of data per month. While these plans aren’t as competitively priced as the carrier’s Unlimited plan, Wing’s superior customer service makes up for it. Plus, you can use mobile hotspot up to your plan’s data limit, and you won’t be charged for going over your monthly allotment. Instead, your data speeds will be reduced.
Does Wing offer family plans?
The folks over at Wing believe that each family is unique, and that family plans should be unique as well. As such, Wing allows you to customize your family cell phone plan to fit each member’s needs. You can add as many lines as you want, and each line can be on any one of Wing’s plan options. You and your partner, for example, can be on unlimited plans while you limit your kids to the 2GB plan.
Wing network coverage and availability
The quality of your network coverage will depend on which network you are paired with. Wing provides service on all of the Big Three networks: Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. They will pair you with any of these networks depending on availability in your area and compatibility with your phone. Most modern smartphones will be compatible with both, so location seems to play a bigger role on which network you join. A Wing agent will help you get on the right network for you.
When I contacted Wing, they were ready to put my Verizon iPhone XR on AT&T’s 4G LTE network. This was based on my rural San Diego County location.
Take a look at the major network rankings for an idea of what you might expect with Wing’s coverage:
- #1: Verizon: 70% 4G coverage
- #2: AT&T: 68% 4G coverage
- #3: T-Mobile: 62% 4G coverage
Switching to Wing
Switching to Wing is very simple. This is due largely to the fact that Wing’s agents will take care of the process as much as they possibly can, and will be there right with you for any of the steps you need to take yourself.
Wing will handle practically everything with your current cell phone carrier, including cancelling your plan and getting your phone unlocked. If you still owe money on your phone, they’ll even work with you to get your payment plan transferred over to their finance partner Affirm.
Wing’s customer service: Firsthand experience
Wing puts a heavy emphasis on their customer service. Their claim of “no robots” is mostly true; they use a bot to gather your information when you initiate a live chat, but will connect you to a live agent shortly after.
Once I gave my information, it took less than a minute for an agent to contact me on both online live chat and via text. I chose to continue the conversation on chat. The agent was extremely patient and answered all of my questions promptly and clearly. Because my iPhone XR has eSIM, I had the option of switching to Wing right away. From my experience, Wing is living up to their mission of providing great customer service.
Who is Wing best for?
If you are a heavy data user looking to get on AT&T’s LTE network without paying AT&T prices, Wing is probably a great option for you. Additionally, if you’ve felt wronged by poor customer service in the past, Wing may be a breath of fresh air.
Light data users may be able to find cheaper prices out there. However, again, if you value customer service, you may be willing to pay just a little more to be with Wing.
