AT&T's international plan options can be expensive. The standard international long-distance rates and international roaming rates can be pretty high if you don't plan ahead. If you make a lot of calls to numbers outside of the United States, or if you plan on using your phone while traveling abroad, you could be hit with a very large bill.
Luckily, AT&T gives you other options to get around those high rates. With AT&T International Calling you can get unlimited minutes to over 85 countries for just $15/month, and with AT&T International Day Pass, you can use your phone just like you would at home for $12/day.
Keep reading to learn all about AT&T's international calling and roaming add-ons, and find out how you can save when connecting to the rest of the world. What international features are included in AT&T plans?
AT&T phone plans aren't completely devoid of international perks. All of AT&T's plans include unlimited texting to over 200 countries. Plus, all of AT&T's unlimited plans come with unlimited calling and texting to numbers in Mexico and Canada. So, if you're happy just texting with your friends around the world, or your family is from Mexico or Canada, you could already be set with your international needs.
For travelers who want to use their phones outside of the United States, all of AT&T's unlimited plans include unlimited talk, text, and data while in Mexico and Canada. The AT&T Premium 2.0 plan also includes unlimited talk, text, and data in 19 Latin American countries.
AT&T International Calling
If texting to over 200 countries or being able to call Mexico and Canada doesn't suffice, you might want to add the AT&T International Calling feature to your plan. For $15/month extra, you'll get to make unlimited calls to over 85 countries, and you'll get a discounted rate for calls to more than 140 countries.
To understand how this might save you money over paying the normal per-minute rate, here are just some examples of countries and destinations that you'd be able to call with AT&T International Calling and the rates you'd pay without the add-on ($0/minute means you have unlimited minutes towards calls for that country):
AT&T International Calling rates (examples)
| Destination | Rate with AT&T International Calling | Standard rate |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | $0/minute | $4/minute |
| Brazil | $0/minute | $3/minute |
| Cuba | $0.60/minute | $3/minute |
| Denmark | $0/minute | $3/minute |
| Greenland | $.50/minute | $3/minute |
| South Korea | $0/minute | $4/minute |
These are just a few examples, but you can get a good idea about how much value there is in AT&T International calling. A four-minute call to Denmark would be more expensive than the add-on which would get you unlimited minutes to the same number.
