Save big on your next phone or plan from AT&T!

AT&T's best cell phone plan is its Premium 2.0 plan, which comes with an excellent set of perks like 100GB of hotspot and unlimited data with no deprioritization. Well before owning a cell phone was commonplace, AT&T was a major player in the telecom industry. Now, it's one of the three major cell phone carriers in the country.

We took a close look at all of AT&T's plans and picked our favorite unlimited, prepaid, family, and cheapest plans.

Why choose an AT&T cell phone plan?

AT&T has the second-largest 4G LTE and 5G networks in the nation, covering 68% of the country with 4G LTE and 29% with 5G. While its 5G coverage is not as expansive as Verizon’s, AT&T remains a reliable choice for those in urban and densely populated areas.

AT&T is the ideal service provider if you prioritize nationwide coverage that reaches rural areas. With better coverage, particularly in rural regions, you can rely on dependable coverage if you travel frequently or pass through more remote areas, whereas Verizon's signal might be weaker.

That being said, if streaming services and plan perks are your raison d’être , then AT&T may not be all that impressive compared to T-Mobile’s expensive top-tier plan with three streaming subscriptions included. However, AT&T’s generous hotspot data allowances and no-frills unlimited plan at an affordable price make the carrier a competitive option against other mobile providers.

AT&T also frequently offers device deals on the latest smartphones for new customers, and a variety of plans from service for seniors living in Florida to cheap prepaid plans starting at $30.

Best AT&T Unlimited Phone Plan

Unlimited plans are AT&T's bread and butter. AT&T gears most of its marketing efforts to its unlimited plans, and as a result, they are by far the most popular of its offerings. These are our picks for the best unlimited AT&T plans.

Premium 2.0 | $90/month—Best AT&T unlimited plan

Starting at $90/month for a single line, the Premium 2.0 plan is also AT&T's best yet most expensive plan. If you're getting your plan directly from AT&T, we're assuming that reliable service and perks are more important to you than cost. Speaking of prioritizing, that's what AT&T does for all of your data on the Premium 2.0 plan. That is, AT&T will never slow your speeds down when you're on this plan, no matter how much of it you use. You’ll have all that unlimited priority data on the AT&T 5G and 4G LTE networks. Additionally, AT&T includes up to 100GB of mobile hotspot data, which is great for anybody who likes to take working from home, a little further away from their actual home.

  • Pros: Truly unlimited data with no deprioritization, 100GB mobile hotspot
  • Cons: Expensive

Get AT&T coverage for half the price

Red Pocket is an excellent option if you want to hook up to the powerful AT&T network, but don't want to pay AT&T's prices. While it may not beat the perks and data allotments of AT&T's expensive plans, it does offer a $30/month Premium Monthly Plan. That's cheaper than all of AT&T's postpaid options.

The plan includes unlimited 5G data with 50GB of premium data on AT&T's network, which is enough data for most average users. You'll only experience slower speeds if you surpass 30GB monthly. Plus, it has a 10GB hotspot allotment of premium data. That means this plan technically offers almost the same amount of mobile hotspot data as the AT&T Unlimited Extra EL plan at a much cheaper price.

Extra 2.0 | $70/month—Best AT&T unlimited plan runner-up

AT&T Extra 2.0 plan is a mid-tier option within AT&T's range of plans. For $70/month, you get 100GB of priority data, which is more than most people need. You'll also receive 50GB of mobile hotspot data, which is half the allotment of the Premium 2.0 plan. This plan strikes a great balance by offering enough priority data and mobile hotspot to fit most people's needs without being the most expensive plan AT&T offers.

  • Pros: Generous priority data for the price, 50GB mobile hotspot data
  • Cons: Still expensive

Best AT&T Prepaid Plans

Going the prepaid route is one way you can save a little while having cell phone service directly with AT&T. However, these AT&T plans will certainly not offer the perks you can find with postpaid plans. Plus, AT&T's best cell phone deals typically come with postpaid options rather than prepaid. Still, prepaid could suffice if all you need is unlimited talk and text with some data thrown in. If you have an unlocked phone, signing up for a prepaid AT&T plan could be a great option. But if you're still unsure, we dive into more detail comparing AT&T prepaid and postpaid plans.

AT&T alternatives

If AT&T's pricing is a bit too expensive for your tastes, there are other options. Smaller carriers called Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) rent access to the big carriers' networks. Because they don't pay for infrastructure, MVNOs can pass on major savings to their customers.

There are plenty of great smaller carriers that offer discounted plans on AT&T's 4G LTE and 5G networks. Cricket Wireless (owned by AT&T), Red Pocket, Good2Go Mobile, Boost Mobile, and Straight Talk are some of the most popular.
