Bumble BFF gets recommended so frequently that I gave it multiple chances across three different cities. When I moved to Boston and needed to build a friend group from scratch, everyone told me to try it. When that didn't work, I figured maybe it was just Boston. So I tried again in Seattle during Pokémon Go Fest, thinking a gaming community might yield better results. Still nothing. Back in San Diego, I downloaded it one more time, hoping third time's the charm.

It wasn't. Each city delivered the same disappointing experience—matches that led nowhere, conversations that fizzled out, and a nagging feeling that I was wasting time swiping through profiles instead of actually meeting people.

  • Available on iOS and Android.
  • Free to use, but premium costs $50/month.

The $50/month paywall problem

I first tried Bumble BFF when I moved to Boston, desperately hoping to build a friend group in a city where I knew absolutely no one. The app gets recommended constantly because it piggybacks off Bumble's dating app reputation, and the concept sounds reasonable enough—swipe on people who seem interesting, match, and start chatting.

In practice, Bumble BFF feels deliberately designed to frustrate free users into upgrading. And that upgrade isn't cheap at $50/month, which is more expensive than most streaming services and many gym memberships combined.

The profiles shown to me on the free version felt completely random. People with zero shared interests kept appearing in my queue. Meanwhile, I'd get notifications that someone "really compatible" had liked my profile, but I couldn't see who without paying.

Bumble BFF's free version limits how many profiles you can see and restricts access to compatible matches.

The algorithm identifies people you'd probably connect with, but those profiles aren't accessible to free users. For an app supposedly focused on helping people make friends, this pricing model feels counterproductive. It's like a gym that only lets you use the treadmills unless you pay extra to access the weight room—technically functional, but missing the most valuable features.

I tried using Bumble BFF again later in Seattle while attending Pokémon Go Fest, thinking maybe a gaming community would yield better results. It didn't. Same random profiles, same locked matches, same frustrating experience.

Pressure timers destroy genuine connection

Even when I did match with people, the interactions usually fizzled out quickly. Bumble BFF gives you 24 hours to send a message after matching, or the connection disappears. This works for dating where romantic interest motivates quick action, but it doesn't translate well to platonic friendships where people approach stranger connections more cautiously.

All I got from Bumble BFF were short-lived message exchanges that never progressed beyond superficial small talk. Nobody suggested actually meeting up or doing something together. The pressure timer creates artificial urgency without fostering genuine connection.

I'm not alone in my frustration. One redditor in r/bumblebff complained about people using the app for hookups rather than friendship: "Came across my first person who is on bff to 'find a woman best friend to do unspeakable things to'... GIRL WHAT GO ON TINDR."

Better friendship app alternatives

If you're looking for genuine friendship connections without expensive paywalls, check out our top friendship apps. I personally recommend activity-based apps like Gofrendly that focus on shared interests rather than superficial swiping. Apps built around actual activities tend to facilitate real meetups instead of endless messaging that goes nowhere.

Looking to expand your friend circle?

Making friends as an adult is genuinely difficult, especially if you've moved to a new city or your existing friend group has scattered. Dating apps monopolized the market for years, but friendship apps are finally catching up.

We tested every major friendship app to see which ones actually help you build real connections. Read our full guide on the best apps for making friends to find the right platform for your social goals.

Bumble BFF: FAQs

Can you use Bumble BFF without paying?

Technically yes, but the free version shows random profiles and hides your most compatible matches behind the premium subscription.

Does Bumble BFF actually help you make friends?

In my experience across multiple cities, no. Conversations fizzle out quickly, nobody suggests meeting up, and the 24-hour timer creates pressure without fostering genuine connection.

Why does Bumble BFF cost so much?

Premium unlocks features like seeing who liked you, unlimited swipes, and access to profiles the algorithm identified as compatible. But its steep cost means it's not worth paying for.

What are better alternatives to Bumble BFF?

Activity-based apps (like Gofrendly) focus on shared interests and facilitate real meetups rather than endless swiping and superficial messaging.

How WhistleOut reviews apps

Our mobile experts test apps extensively before recommending or warning against them. For this review, I spent one full month actively using Bumble BFF to evaluate its functionality, user experience, and whether it delivers on its promises.

  • Real-world testing
I created genuine profiles, attempted to match with and message other users, and evaluated whether the app facilitated actual friendships or just wasted time.
  • Honest assessment of monetization
We evaluate whether apps are transparent about costs, whether paywalls are reasonable or limiting, and whether free versions provide genuine value or are designed to push upgrades.
  • User experience matters
Beyond functionality, we assess whether apps respect users' time, make deletion straightforward, and deliver on their marketing promises.

From there, we weigh each app's pros and cons and determine whether it's worth downloading, worth paying for, or worth skipping entirely.
