Google released the Pixel 7a in May of 2023. With nearly identical specs to the Pixel 7 but a price tag almost $100 lower, the 7a is an incredible value. Like its predecessor, the Pixel 6a, it features many of the same features as its older siblings, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.

The Google Pixel 7a is essentially a smaller, wallet-friendly version of the Pixel 7. There's a 6.1-inch full-high-definition plus (FHD+) 90Hz display. Its faster refresh rate is better for gaming and provides more comfortable scrolling or tapping for everyday use. Measuring 6 x 2.8 x 0.4 inches and weighing just 6.8 oz., the 7a is fairly compact and easy to use with one hand or slide into your pocket.

You've got a choice of four colors: Charcoal, Sea, Snow, and Coral (a Google Store exclusive). The screen is comprised of scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Coupled with an IP67 dust and water resistance rating, the Pixel 7a is durable.

Compared with the Pixel 7, the 7a is slightly smaller with its 6.1-inch display to the 7's 6.3-inch screen. Additionally, the Pixel 7a sports a plastic back rather than the premium glass backing of the 7 and 7 Pro. Stepping up to the Pixel 7 or 7 Pro provides slightly more waterproofing with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

Outstanding camera quality has long been one of the Google Pixel's strong suits, and the 7a doesn't deviate. Its cameras are similar to the Pixel 7's, with minor differences. You'll find a rear-facing 64MP main shooter with an f/1.89 aperture and 80-degree field of view (FoV) alongside a 13MP f/2.2 aperture 120-degree FoV ultrawide lens. There's a front-facing 13MP f/2.2 aperture 95-degree FoV camera.

The Pixel 7 boasts 50MP 1.85 aperture 85-degree field of view and 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide 114-degree FoV rear-facing lenses. There's also a 10.8MP f/2.2 92.8-FoV selfie snapper. While the Pixel 7 and 7a feature minor differences in megapixels and image sensors, real-world results are pretty close. Bigger image sensors let in more light for enhanced details, but Google's software balances out the two phones. Both handsets offer the same superb suite of image optimization tools like Photo Unblur, Night Sight, Magic Eraser, and Real Tone.

Under the hood, the Pixel 7a rocks the same reliable Tensor G2 processor with an M2 Titan security chip found in the flagship Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and Fold. Although the Tensor G2 falls short in raw performance compared to the latest Snapdragon chips like the 8 Gen 2, Google's Tensor G2 is great for everyday use. Paired with 8GB of RAM, the Pixel 7a handles gaming and multitasking with aplomb. Unless you're a hardcore gamer that needs best-in-class performance with demanding mobile games like Genshin Impact, the Pixel 7a's Tensor G2 will suit you just fine for daily use.

Battery and charging

The Pixel 7a packs a 4385mAh battery that reportedly lasts over 24 hours. With Extreme Battery Saver, you can eke out an impressive 72 hours of battery life. There's also fast charging and Qi wireless charging. But if you want fast wireless charging and battery share for wirelessly juicing up other devices like phones or earbuds, you'll need a Pixel 7 or 7 Pro.
