While some Verizon plans include unlimited data, others feature data caps. If you're on a limited data plan, monitoring your data usage is essential. Even for unlimited plans, tracking how much data you've burned through is crucial to avoid potential slowdowns.

You can check your Verizon data usage with the My Verizon app, a pound code, a data widget, or the official Verizon website. Let’s jump into how to check your Verizon data usage.

How to Check Your Verizon Data Usage

Keeping track of your mobile data usage is critical. By ensuring you don't exceed your data allowance during your billing cycle, you'll be able to avoid overage charges.

Thankfully, Verizon makes it simple to find out how much cellular data you have left. As a Verizon customer, you can track your data usage:

  • With text/phone pound codes
  • Using the My Verizon app
  • By logging in to your Verizon account
  • Via the My Verizon data widget

How to check Verizon data usage via text or call

call verizon pound code

The easiest method to check your Verizon data usage is by texting or calling a pound (#) code. The number to call or text Verizon to check your data usage is #DATA or #3282. Note that usage alerts aren't available for unlimited plans or internet devices such as mobile hotspots.

To check your mobile data consumption with a phone call:

  • On your Verizon phone, open the dialer app.
  • Enter #DATA or #3282.
  • Click the call button.

Once you've dialed the correct pound code, you should receive a text message or an on-screen pop-up with information on your data usage for that billing cycle.

You can also text Verizon pound codes instead. Here’s how to get a data usage text from Verizon.

texting verizon pound code
  • Fire up your messaging app.
  • Type #DATA or #3282.
  • Press Send.

Then, you should receive a text message letting you know your data consumption.

You’ll receive a basic overview of how much data you've used during the current billing cycle. Plus, you can view minutes of talk time, text messages sent, and total data used.

Expert tip: Pound codes aren't up to date

It's important to remember that using the Verizon pound code #DATA only gives an estimate of your minutes and data used since the final day of your billing cycle. It might not include data consumed over the last 24 hours. So if you were going hotspot crazy, the information provided with Verizon shortcodes might not be entirely up to date.

How to track data usage with the My Verizon app

While seeing your Verizon data use with a pound code is simple enough, you may want more detailed information. The My Verizon app (available for both Android and iOS) provides statistics on hotspot usage, historical data consumption from past billing cycles, and more.

Since Verizon's #DATA code won't provide information on data use for unlimited plans or internet devices like mobile hotspots, the My Verizon app can be extremely useful. The My Verizon app is free and available for all Verizon customers, although it’s limited to Android devices running Android 5.0 or higher and Apple iOS devices on 11.0 or higher.

To view your cellular data usage with the My Verizon app:

  • Download the My Verizon app or, if you've already got the app installed, simply open the My Verizon app.
  • Head to Account.
  • If you're prompted to sign in to prove that it's you, sign in for authentication.
  • From the list of options, select View Usage under the Data section of the app.

Note that once you've installed the My Verizon app, calling or texting #3282 may open up the app for you. When you've successfully logged into the My Verizon app, you can manage your plan, view your bill, and see your usage details.

After navigating into the data section, you can view your mobile data consumption over the past 30 days. If it's just you, everything should be pretty straightforward since there will be only one number to pick from. However, if you're on a Verizon family plan, you'll be able to drill down and monitor individual plan usage per line.

Additionally, the My Verizon App allows you to break down data consumption by individual app. For instance, you can see apps that have eaten up the most network or Wi-Fi data.

You may want to track past data use. To view your Verizon data history:

  • Open the My Verizon app.
  • Tap Account.
  • Sign in if you’re prompted to authenticate your account.
  • Tap Usage Details.
  • Pick the History tab.

Under the history tab within the usage details section of the My Verizon app, you should be able to see information from the past three billing cycles including data types, top activities (such as video, web, or navigation), and total data consumption.

How to turn on Verizon usage alerts

Enabling usage alerts is a great way to check your remaining data. On Verizon, you can easily turn on usage alerts:

  • Log in to My Verizon using the My Verizon App or your online portal.
  • Navigate to Usage Alerts.
  • Tick the box beside the alert notifications you want to receive.
  • Hit Save Alert Settings.
  • Select Ok.
  • For family plans with multiple lines on one account, head over to Who to Alert and select which phone line you want to send alerts to.

Now, you should be set up to automatically receive usage notifications via email or text message.

How to check your data on Verizon using the My Verizon Data Widget

For Android and iOS devices, Verizon offers its customers the My Verizon Data Widget. As the name suggests, this smartphone widget showcases how much data you’ve burned through on your current billing cycle.

My Verizon Data Widget: iPhones

To install the My Verizon Data Widget on iOS:

  • Download and sign in to the My Verizon iOS app first.
  • Download the My Verizon Data Widget on iOS from the Apple App store.

  • Tap the My Verizon Data Widget.
  • The My Verizon App will launch and should automatically activate the Data Widget, however you may be prompted to sign in.

Once you’ve installed the Verizon My Data Widget, you can view it by swiping right from your lock screen or home screen. You’ll be able to check out an intuitive display that shows your total data usage details alongside the percentage of cellular data that you have left.

My Verizon Data Widget: Androids

Android users can install the My Verizon Data Widget as well:

  • Download and sign in to the Android My Verizon App.
  • Locate the My Verizon App icon and long-press it.
  • Tap the widget icon at the top of the pop-up menu. You’ll see two different widgets available: A dark mode widget or light mode widget.
  • Press and hold your preferred style of widget.
  • Drag the widget to your Android handset’s home screen.

After that, the Android My Verizon Data Widget should be properly installed. An easy-to-read display shows your total data and a visualization of your consumed data.

How to check your data on Verizon via the web

In addition to Verizon shortcodes, the My Verizon app, and a My Verizon Data Widget, you can see how much data you have left on Verizon by visiting your My Verizon account portal to check your data usage from a laptop or desktop:

  • Head over to the Verizon website.
  • Log in with your user ID or Verizon mobile number and password.
  • Select My Usage from the left-hand located navigation menu.
  • Find the Data section.

From here, you can see how much data you’ve used on your Verizon plan. For multiple lines on the same plan, you can dig into mobile data consumption per individual phone number.

Check Usage via Your Phone's Data Settings

Aside from Verizon’s various methods for monitoring your data, you can check your data usage on Verizon simply using your device’s built-in data monitoring tools, found in your Settings menu. Here’s how to check your Verizon data usage for both iPhones and Android devices.

Best Verizon Phone Plans for Data Usage

Unlimited vs. limited vs. prepaid Verizon plans

Verizon offers two different varieties of plans: postpaid and prepaid. Within both prepaid and postpaid plans, you can select from unlimited data plans or limited data plans.

On a limited data plan, you'll have a set allotment of data to use each month. Once you burn through that, you'll experience throttled data, usually at 3G or even 2G speeds. For unlimited plans, Verizon uses data deprioritization to occasionally slow down speeds at peak network congestion times.

Generally, Verizon's prepaid plans are considerably cheaper than its postpaid plans, making them an attractive option for a single line. Postpaid multi-line/family plans are an exception. You can save a lot with multi-line plans. For example, a single line of Verizon’s Unlimited Plus costs $80/month, but activating four lines of service drops the price down to just $45/month per line.

Don't pay for expensive data you don't use

Many people don't realize they can get Verizon coverage without paying Verizon prices by switching to an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). These carriers use the same towers but don't have to pay for the upkeep costs, thereby passing the savings on to you. An MVNO like Visible has plans starting as low as $25/monthwhich is $35 less than the cheapest prepaid plan from Verizon.

With Visible Wireless, you'll get the nation's best 4G LTE coverage and 5G access, plus unlimited talk, text, and data for a third of the cost of a Verizon unlimited plan. The $35/month Visible+ plan and $45/month Visible+ Pro plan include unlimited premium 5G ultra-wideband data. Plus, it offers an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds limited to 5-15Mbps. That’s still cheaper than Verizon's cheapest postpaid unlimited data plan at $65/month.

Should I upgrade my Verizon phone plan?

Depending on your data consumption, you may consider upgrading your phone plan—especially if you consistently exceed your monthly allotment. If you're a heavy data user who enjoys HD streaming, going live on social media sites such as Instagram and TikTok, or even a digital nomad who requires mobile internet for Zoom calls, we recommend the Unlimited Plus plan

For $80/month, you get truly unlimited premium high-speed data that doesn't slow down regardless of how much you use, a 30GB monthly hotspot allowance, and 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) video streaming capabilities on mobile internet. You can sign up for discounted perks like the Disney Bundle or Apple One.

We like the Verizon Unlimited Welcome plan for value-focused users. It lacks premium priority data, so there's a threat of deprioritization at any time, and you don't get a mobile hotspot allowance. But at $65/month for a single line, Unlimited Welcome is a cost-effective offering.

Regardless of which plan you select, a Verizon unlimited plan can let you surf the web, stream videos and music, and play games with little worry about exceeding a data cap.

Verizon Data Usage: FAQs

What are my options for checking my Verizon data?

You can track your Verizon data consumption by calling or texting #3282, via your My Verizon app or Data Widget, or by logging into your online account.

How do I check my data usage on Verizon with an iPhone?

You can see how much data you've used on an iPhone by heading to Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data > Current Period.

How do I check my data usage on Verizon with an Android

Android users may check their data consumption by navigating to: Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage. (For Samsung users: Settings > Connections > Data Usage.)

Can I monitor my Verizon data usage during the month?

You can absolutely keep tabs on your Verizon data use during the current billing cycle. Verizon short codes, the My Verizon app, My Verizon Data Widget, and My Verizon online portal let you access your data consumption on-demand. Alternatively, you can configure data usage alerts for automatic monitoring.

How long is a Verizon data usage cycle?

Verizon operates on a 30-day billing cycle. At midnight on the day your billing cycle ends, your data resets. So if your billing cycle begins on the 3rd of the month, your data will reset at midnight on the 2nd. Thus, a Verizon data usage cycle is 30 days long.

Which Verizon plan is best for data usage?

A Verizon unlimited plan is best for data usage, as you won’t have to worry about going over your allocation each month. Each of Verizon's unlimited plans comes with excellent network coverage and different benefits. Most of its postpaid unlimited plans include dedicated hotspot data.

While there are no overall data limits—Verizon unlimited plans are truly unlimited, there are high-speed data limits. Rest assured, you’ll never be cut off from your data. However, if you exceed your data allocation, then at times of peak congestion, there’s a chance you may experience de-prioritized data.

If you use a ton of data, the top-shelf Unlimited Plus affords truly unlimited high-speed premium data along with a beefy 30GB of hotspot data. We recommend the Unlimited Welcome plan for value-priced unlimited data.

Do I need to check my data usage on a Verizon unlimited plan?

You may think that because you have an unlimited plan, there's no need to check how much data you've used. However, that's not entirely accurate. Although Verizon doesn't charge overages for exceeding a data limit, some of its unlimited data plans have high-speed allotments (called “premium data”) before your speeds could potentially drop. Granted, they're generally pretty high like 50GB/month.

Often, carriers (Verizon included) will deprioritize certain subscribers during times of heavy network congestion. Thanks to premium data access, you can enjoy fast mobile internet, so long as you don't go over your allowance of premium data.
