Fortunately, there are ways to take advantage of Verizon's network without emptying your life savings—by using MVNOs. Not only does Verizon have the strongest network around, but it's also home to some of the best MVNOs in the entire industry, such as Visible and US Mobile.

Several carriers run on Verizon's network at a fraction of the cost. Here are the best Verizon MVNOs available today.

Which carriers run on Verizon's network?

There are actually quite a few carriers with phone plans that use Verizon towers, including:

  • Visible
  • Red Pocket
  • Straight Talk Wireless
  • Xfinity Mobile
  • US Mobile
  • MobileX

That being said, the above list of Verizon alternatives is only a small sampling of 5G and 4G LTE MVNOs on Verizon's network—the full list of MVNOs sharing Verizon's towers is much longer.

Visible Wireless: Best overall Verizon MVNO

Editor's Pick

What you get with Visible

We rank Visible as the best Verizon MVNO overall, considering its plan prices, features, and coverage on Verizon's robust network. We put the unlimited Visible Plan to the test for a month and were hooked on their quality coverage and budget-friendly plan pricing. Visible offers some of the most value-oriented unlimited plans on the market, starting at $25/month for the base Visible plan, $35/month for Visible's mid-tier Visible+ plan, and $45/month for the most expensive Visible+Pro plan with more perks. With Visible, you get:

  • Unlimited 4G LTE and 5G high-speed data
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot capabilities at no added cost (capped at 5Mbps, 10Mbps, 15Mbps speeds)
  • Free calling and messaging to Mexico and Canada
  • Unlimited 3G data in Mexico and Canada ($35 and $45 Visible+ and Visible+Pro plans)
  • International perks including calling to 30+ countries, and texting to 200+ countries ($35 and $45 Visible+ and Visible+Pro plans)
  • Access to Verizon's 5G Ultra-Wideband network ($35 and $45 Visible+ and Visible+Pro plans)
  • Unlimited premium high-speed data ($35 and $45 Visible+ and Visible+Pro plans)

Visible plan pricing

You'll be hard-pressed to find a better deal for an unlimited plan on Verizon's network—a comparable unlimited plan directly from Verizon would cost you twice as much. Visible also offers unlimited hotspot data, which is a great perk, MVNO or not.

Twigby: Best cheap low-data Verizon MVNO

Editor's Pick

Why Twigby works for low-data users

In terms of cost, Twigby offers some of the lowest-cost plans available on Verizon's network—you can get unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of high-speed data for just $15/month on the Unlimited Talk, Text, with 2GB plan. Not only do you get 2GB of 4G LTE data, but once that limit is reached, you get unlimited 2G data. This plan even includes mobile hotspot capabilities, but it draws from your 2GB data plan total. That being said, Twigby's Unlimited Talk, Text, with 2GB plan gives you a cheap phone plan if you don't need unlimited data and can get by on 2GB per month.

Our testing experience

After two months of testing Twigby's unlimited plan with 20GB of premium data, we loved the consistent speeds and robust coverage at an affordable price. To find out more, head to our full Twigby review.

Spectrum Mobile: Best Verizon MVNO for bundling

Editor's Pick

Bundling benefits

Spectrum Mobile is one of the best Verizon alternatives for internet and mobile bundling. But there's a small catch: it's only available for Spectrum home internet customers. You can choose from Spectrum's lowest-priced Pay By the Gig plan at $20/month for 1GB or opt for one of their unlimited plans starting at $30/month. With Spectrum's base $30/month Unlimited Data plan, for example, you get:

  • 30GB of premium high-speed data
  • Unlimited talk and text with 2,000 minutes of calling to Mexico and Canada
  • Nationwide Spectrum Wi-Fi hotspots
  • 5GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data, with unlimited 3G speeds thereafter

Plan options and pricing

All Spectrum Mobile lines require a Spectrum Internet plan, which you can bundle for a discount. Bundle a single line on Spectrum's $30 Unlimited Data plan with the Internet Premier plan for an additional $20/month. That's a monthly bill of just $50 for both internet and mobile service. Note, however, that these are Spectrum's 12-month promotional prices; you can expect serious cost increases after 12 months. All in all, if you are looking for internet and cell service, check if Spectrum is available in your area.

Verizon MVNO network coverage

Verizon has the best overall network of all the major carriers in the industry, with about 70% nationwide 4G LTE coverage—however, 5G coverage falls to just 11%. Still, because Verizon's network is so robust overall, roaming on other networks is rarely a concern.

That said, most Verizon MVNOs operate slightly differently when it comes to roaming, since they often aren't permitted to roam on other networks. This restriction means that in the rare case roaming comes in handy—when in select rural regions, for example—your Verizon MVNO plan might leave you without service. Again, the need for roaming is far less common on a network as impressive as Verizon's, but you'll still want to check a carrier's roaming restrictions before signing up if you know you'll need roaming coverage on your phone plan.

GSM vs. CDMA: Which network does Verizon use?

The two types of networks you'll find in the United States are GSM (Global System for Mobiles) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), with Verizon falling into the CDMA category. CDMA and GSM are two cellular network technologies that transmit cell phone data through different means. This information helps determine whether or not you can bring your own device to an MVNO because of phone compatibility. The differences between these technologies were much more relevant in previous years; however, both now operate largely the same, especially with older technologies being phased out in favor of 5G. In fact, Verizon transitioned into newer technologies, and has been using them entirely since 2023.

GSM was previously the only technology able to use data and make calls at the same time. But this hasn't been the case since the adoption of 4G (and subsequently 5G). All newer Samsung models and iPhones can easily use data and make calls simultaneously.

Will my phone work with a Verizon MVNO?

If you're switching from Verizon itself to a Verizon MVNO, the phone you have will likely still work with your MVNO once you switch. Things are less straightforward when switching from the other major networks and their MVNO carriers. The make, year, and model of your device will largely determine its compatibility.

For instance, if you have a newer iPhone (2016 or later), odds are your phone will have the internal hardware to operate on most modern network types and technologies—meaning most SIM cards will be compatible.

Remember to unlock your phone before you switch!

In most cases, unlocking your phone is a prerequisite to taking it to a new carrier—both MVNOs and major carriers. Each carrier has specific unlock requirements that must be met before you're eligible, with most citing specifics relating to both tenure and account status. This process is usually free, and relatively simple to complete. But there may be a few things to know heading into the process. Check out some of our carrier unlock guides on WhistleOut:

With an unlocked phone, either purchased unlocked or unlocked by your carrier, you'll be able to activate it on Verizon's network.

Should you switch to a Verizon MVNO?

Depending on your overall needs, signing up with a Verizon MVNO plan might be the perfect compromise between using Verizon's network and saving some money in the process. You'll have access to several different plans and the freedom to try out different carriers as you see fit. And where Verizon overwhelmingly has unlimited plans as its main offerings, MVNOs typically offer more variety in data-specific packages. This is especially great for those who don't need unlimited plans—instead, you can choose your monthly data and pay only for what you use. Plus, the flexibility of prepaid Verizon MVNOs means you can switch up your plan at any time, making it easier to dial in exactly what you need.

Many Verizon MVNOs, like Visible, let you take advantage of multi-line discounts, just like you would with Verizon family plans. This means whether you're a couple, a family, or an individual looking for a plan, you'll likely have no issue finding a suitable plan with a Verizon MVNO. In fact, MVNOs often offer better options price-wise for 2-line phone plans, compared to Verizon's quite expensive 2-line options.

Which Verizon MVNO Is Right for You?

With so many options available, picking the right MVNO can seem like an overwhelming task if you're new to the process. But picking the absolute best option for you actually comes down to a few simple questions:

  1. Do you need unlimited talk and unlimited text?
  2. Do you need an unlimited data plan?
  3. Will you need a family plan? If so, how many lines?
  4. What is your monthly budget, ideally? Is there any flexibility?
  5. Can you bring your old phone?

Answering these questions will help set you in the right direction or, at the very least, give you a solid starting point to build on. It will also make sense for you to consider potential savings and discounts, as many carriers offer deals and incentives to switch to their service. We keep an updated list of deals from both major carriers and MVNOs, with big savings you won't want to miss out on.

What's the difference between Verizon MVNOs and Verizon prepaid?

When compared side by side, MVNOs offer a cheaper and more competitive deal than Verizon Prepaid plans. You get the same network access and data allotments, even similar perks like mobile hotspot and international data, for half the price of a prepaid plan. And cheap doesn't mean bad quality when it comes to MVNOs. Take Verizon's top two unlimited prepaid plans, priced at $60/month and $70/month, compared to Visible's unlimited plans starting at $25/month. Both offer unlimited data, premium data on higher-end plans, mobile hotspot, all on the same 5G network. On top of budget-friendly pricing and top-tier coverage, most MVNOs also have excellent customer service care and user-friendly apps.

The only strike against an MVNO is deprioritization. Verizon gives its clients first dibs on data, meaning MVNO clients may experience slower data speeds at high-traffic times. If that's the only drawback, the winner is clear: Get the same coverage for half the price with an MVNO.

What we like about Verizon MVNOs
  • Cheaper prices for the same coverage
  • 5G access
  • High premium data allowances
  • Mobile hotspot typically included
  • Competitive new member promotions
  • Excellent customer service

What could be improved about Verizon MVNOs
  • Deprioritization (slower speeds at high-traffic times)
  • Fewer (if any) subsidized perks

Verizon MVNO FAQs

Still have unanswered questions? Understandable—there is a lot of information when it comes to MVNOs. Fortunately, we've got the answers.

Do Verizon MVNOs have access to the Verizon 5G network?

Yes, most Verizon MVNOs have access to Verizon's 5G network, including both standard 5G and the faster 5G Ultra Wideband. However, access varies by carrier and plan tier. Premium plans from carriers like Visible+ and US Mobile's Unlimited Premium typically include full 5G access, while budget plans may be limited to 4G LTE speeds. Check your specific MVNO plan details to confirm 5G availability, as some lower-cost options may restrict you to older network technologies to keep prices down.

Do MVNOs on Verizon have good data speeds?

Generally speaking, you can expect similar 4G LTE data speeds when using Verizon MVNOs. But be sure to check your specific plan, as some carriers will throttle data speeds depending on the MVNO plan's terms and conditions. In some cases, speeds can be slowed to a near-unusable 2G connection, which is really only enough for basic email in modern times. Be mindful of the fine print in your plan's structuring, and watch for terms like "premium data," which usually distinguishes a different type of data you're getting—depending on the plan type or tier. See how MVNO Spectrum Mobile compares with Verizon, its parent carrier, in our head-to-head match up.

What are the cheapest alternatives to Verizon?

The cheapest alternatives to Verizon are MVNOs that run on Verizon's network at much lower prices. Twigby offers the lowest-cost option at just $15/month for unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of data. Other budget-friendly Verizon alternatives include Visible starting at $25/month for unlimited everything, Red Pocket with plans from $20/month, and Affinity Cellular with basic plans around $20/month. These carriers use the same Verizon towers but cost 50-70% less than Verizon's direct plans, making them perfect if you want Verizon's coverage without the premium price tag.

What is a Verizon MVNO eSIM?

An eSIM refers to embedded SIMs (the "e" in eSIM), as opposed to physical SIM cards, which are becoming a thing of the past. These eSIMs allow you to switch between providers without needing to receive a physical SIM card tied to your carrier of choice.

Does Verizon Deprioritize MVNO Customers?

Yes, Verizon does deprioritize MVNO customers during times of network congestion. This means that when cell towers are busy—like at concerts, sporting events, or in crowded areas—Verizon's direct customers get priority access to data speeds, while MVNO customers may experience slower speeds. However, this typically only affects you during peak usage times and busy locations. Most of the time, MVNO customers get the same fast speeds as Verizon's direct customers. Some premium MVNO plans, like Visible+ and US Mobile's top-tier plans, offer higher priority data to minimize this issue.

Which MVNO is owned by Verizon?

Verizon owns Visible Wireless and Total Wireless.

Which carriers use Verizon towers?

Dozens of providers run off of Verizon towers, including Visible Wireless, Credo Mobile, Lively (formerly GreatCall), Page Plus, Spectrum Mobile, Xfinity Mobile, Red Pocket Mobile, and a slew of other carriers.
