Sharing your location on an iPhone is an excellent safety feature for parents to monitor their kids and a great way for friends to keep track of each other. In just a few simple steps, you can share your exact location via GPS with anyone you choose.

You can share your location on an iPhone with the Find My app, through an Apple AirTag, or with your contacts through iMessage. You can set this tracking to be full-time or set a time limit for when your phone will stop sharing. Read on to learn more about these two sharing methods and what situations they might be helpful for.

Why can't I share my location on my iPhone?

Before you use any of the methods below, you must have Location Services enabled on your iPhone. To do this, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security. From here, you can enable or disable the location options for your entire device or individual apps like Find My.

Share your location with the Find My app

The Find My app on an iPhone.

The Find My app is a combination of two previous Apple apps: Find My iPhone and Find My Friends. You can use the interface on the Find My app to see the live locations of all your Apple products, anything you’ve attached an AirTag to, and any individuals who have shared their locations with you.

To share your location with the Find My app:

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Select the People tab.
  3. Tap the Add (+) button.
  4. Type in the name or find the person in your contacts you want to share your location with.
  5. Press send.
  6. Select how long you want to share your location. You can choose one hour, the end of the day, or indefinitely.

Whoever you select will receive a notification that you’ve started sharing your location. They can also share their location back if they want.

This method is best for people who want to share their location indefinitely in the background of their device. It’s great for parents who want to keep an eye on their kids or even for groups of friends who are traveling together and don’t want to lose track of each other.

Share your location via satellite

You can also share your location via satellite in the Find My app if you have an iPhone 14. This is a great safety feature if you are going to be in an area with poor cell service like when camping or hiking. However, your location will only update every 15 minutes using this feature and you can only use it with people you’ve already shared your location with. You can’t select new contacts to share your location with when using the satellite feature.

To share your location via satellite:

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Find an outdoor location with a clear view of the sky.
  3. Select the Me tab.
  4. Find the My Location via Satellite option.
  5. Tap Send my location.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to find a satellite in the sky to transmit your message.

Note: This is not the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature found on iPhone 14. Though it uses the same process, this method is for sharing your location with friends and family. It does not contact emergency services for rescue.

Can people see my location history?

There is no way for your friends to see a list of all the locations you’ve been to. That said, someone can make their own list if they are constantly tracking your location. Your phone also has a list of frequently visited significant locations that it monitors, but only you have access to that data.

Share your location with iMessage

The Send My Current Location and Share My Location options in iMessage.

Sending your location with iMessage is incredibly easy. This method can also be used to send your location to people not using Apple products.

To send your current location:

  1. Open the desired chat in your Messages app.
  2. Press their profile icon at the top of your screen.
  3. Select Send My Current Location.
  4. An Apple Maps bubble will appear in the chat giving your current location.

This method sends a snapshot of your current location, so it doesn’t follow you if you change locations. If you send your current location to iPhone users, they can open it in Apple Maps for directions. If you send it to an Android device, they’ll receive an Apple Maps link that opens in their browser. This method works best for temporary situations, like trying to find your friends at a concert or a park.

You can also share your ongoing live location in iMessage. This can only be sent to another Apple device and is the same action as adding them as a friend in your Find My app.

To share your ongoing location in real-time:

  1. Open the desired chat in your Messages app.
  2. Press the profile icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Share My Location.
  4. Select how long you want to share your location. You can choose one hour, the end of the day, or indefinitely.

They will receive a notification that you’ve started sharing your location.

How much data does location sharing use?

Location-sharing uses varying amounts of data depending on how you're using your device. Simply sharing your location doesn't actually use a lot of data. The GPS and network location data can be sent in an extremely small message. That's why it's possible to share your location via low-orbit satellites. What does use a lot of data is pulling up the maps to view your location or someone else's location. All that information must be downloaded each time you open the app.
