Find My Device requirements
Google’s Find My Android service requires a few conditions to function properly:
- Your phone has power
- You're signed into your Google account
- Location services are enabled
- You have an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data)
- Find My Device is toggled on
- You're visible on Google Pay
Initial Find My Android settings
Here are the settings you’ll need to adjust to locate your device:
- Head to Settings > Location to enable location services.
- Toggle on Use Location.
- Head to Settings > Security > Find My Device.
- Toggle Use Find My Device on.
Tracking a Lost Android Phone
Once you’ve successfully set up Find My Device, it’s time to track your Android (just in case you lose your phone, make sure you've set up your voicemail on Android).
On the Web
- Go to Google’s Find My Device page via a web browser.
- Select the desired phone or tablet from the list of added Androids.
- Check the last-known location, and any available Wi-Fi network name to find your device.
Google’s Find My Device service also lets you see present battery capacity and a helpful visualization of your device’s location on Google Maps.
With the Find My Device app
Select mobile devices, including my Google Pixel 6 Pro, come with the Find My Device service baked into the Android operating system (OS). However, other gadgets like my Samsung Galaxy S9+ require the standalone Android app. To track your lost device via the standalone application:
- Head to the Google Play store and download the Find My Device app.
- Open the app, choose your desired Google account, and hit the Continue as option.
- Sign in with your Google account and allow location access.
You located your phone. Now what?
Upon locating a phone, you have three main options:
- Play a sound: Have your Android ring for around 5 minutes, even if alerts are silent. We recommend using the play sound option if your phone or tablet is nearby, like under the couch cushions.
- Secure device: Did you forget your phone at your favorite taco joint or in the backseat of an Uber again? Securing your device locks it and signs out of your Google account. The secure device option is great if your Android is in an easily accessible or public location.
- Erase device: The nuclear option. If you cannot find your device or suspect it’s stolen, go ahead and reset your phone.
