There are two things no guidebook ever gets right about solo female travel: which neighborhoods to actually avoid at night, and whether you'll feel comfortable in a destination as a woman alone.

NomadHer fills both gaps with a free, identity-verified community built entirely by and for solo female travelers—and it's probably the app that surprised me most while testing our full solo female travel safety app guide.

You can find real women who have done the same trips you're planning—not travel bloggers with partnerships to protect, but women who tell you the actual story, including the parts that made them uncomfortable.

NomadHer: Verified safety guides and travel buddy matching, for women only

NomadHer is a destination safety community and travel buddy platform exclusively for solo female travelers, with identity verification required to join. Women share real, experience-based advice about the places they've visited, including what's safe, what to skip, which neighborhoods to avoid after dark, and what they wish someone had told them before they landed.

It also functions as a destination-based matchmaking tool. If you're planning a trip to Bali or South Korea and want to connect with another woman going at the same time, NomadHer lets you find her. You can travel independently while still having someone who knows where you are.

City-level safety intel written by women who've actually been there

The community guides in NomadHer are detailed and specific. Women write about the neighborhoods they felt watched in, the areas where solo female travelers have been targeted, and the local customs that caught them off guard. That's the kind of first-person, nothing-to-sell honesty that is hard to find in travel content.

In the first week of April, the app had significant activity around South Korea, Malaysia, and Bali—which tells you something about where the community is active. You can choose to just connect and share notes with someone heading to the same place, or meet up in-person once you're both there.

NomadHer also hosts community meetups and offline events in different cities. There was a FIFA World Cup ticket raffle running when I tested it. That's how active the community is beyond the app itself.

The verification process is strict—and that's the point

To join NomadHer, you have to submit a selfie and either a passport or government-issued ID for identity verification. My account was approved in about three days. That turnaround might feel slow compared to apps that let you sign up in thirty seconds, but it's the entire reason the community is trustworthy.

A space where every member has been identity-verified means no lurkers, no men posing as travelers, and no accounts designed to take advantage of women sharing their location and travel plans.

However, when using any app to connect with other travelers, meeting in a public place before sharing accommodation details is still good practice—but the verified community makes NomadHer meaningfully safer than most social travel platforms.

Free to use, but the identity verification takes up to three days

The full NomadHer community, including destination guides, the travel buddy finder, and community forums, is free to access. Some in-app events have a separate cost, but nothing in the app itself requires payment. For a free app aimed at a specific and underserved niche, the depth of content is more than you'd expect.

If you're planning a solo trip and haven't sorted your safety setup yet, NomadHer is one of the easiest first steps: free, substantive, and community-sourced in a way that travel guides rarely are.

NomadHer: FAQ

Is NomadHer free?

Yes, NomadHer is completely free to download and use. Community access, destination guides, and the travel buddy finder are all included at no cost. Some community events have a separate fee, but nothing in the app itself requires a subscription.

Is NomadHer safe to use?

NomadHer requires passport or government ID verification to join, making it one of the more rigorously verified travel community apps available. As with any platform connecting strangers, meeting in a public place first before sharing accommodation details is always the smart move.

How long does NomadHer verification take?

Account verification typically takes two to three days. You'll need to submit a selfie alongside a valid passport or government-issued ID before your account is approved and you can access the full community.

Can I find a travel companion through NomadHer?

Yes. NomadHer's travel buddy finder lets you search for other solo female travelers heading to the same destination around the same time. You can connect in-app first and decide whether to meet up once you're both there.
