Verizon TravelPass

Traveling can be one of the most fulfilling things in life, but it can also be stressful. Ensuring you get phone coverage abroad can contribute to that stress. Many U.S. carriers have international roaming deals with various carriers in other countries, though the rates can be very confusing. Verizon simplifies this process for its customers through its TravelPass, charging you a flat daily rate when you use your phone outside the United States.

Keep reading to learn about Verizon's TravelPass and how it can help you in your travels.

What is Verizon TravelPass?

The Verizon TravelPass is an international roaming feature that Verizon customers can use while traveling. With the TravelPass, you can use your phone the same as you do at home for $10 per day of usage while abroad.

You'll have the same talk and text limits when using the TravelPass as you do in the U.S. on your phone plan. Data you use on TravelPass will also count against your plan's normal monthly limit.

However, there is a caveat: Verizon will limit your high-speed data usage to 0.5GB (500MB) daily. That's enough for about six hours of general web browsing and one hour of watching streaming video in standard definition. If you reach the limit, your speeds will slow down for the rest of the day.

Verizon myPlan TravelPass perks

If you are using one of Verizon's customizable myPlan offerings—like the Unlimited Welcome or Unlimited Plus plans—you can add a three-day TravelPass perk onto your plan for just $10/month. Every month it'll give you three days of international coverage for the price of one. These TravelPass days also accrue for up to a year.

Remember that myPlan perks can be added or removed at any point. So, if you know you have an upcoming week-long trip, you can add this perk to your plan for three months before you leave. That'll provide enough days of international coverage to cover your entire trip for just $30 overall. Then, simply remove the perk and return to your normal bill!

TravelPass in Mexico and Canada

Most Verizon phone plans already include roaming in Mexico and Canada. However, if this feature is missing from your plan, you can use TravelPass instead for just $5/day.

Bottom line: Get the same coverage and international perks for half the price

Many people don't realize that you can get the same domestic coverage as you would from a Verizon plan by going with a much cheaper MVNO like Visible. You can snag an unlimited everything plan with Big Red's 4G and 5G coverage–and unlimited talk and text in Mexico and Canada– for just $25/month

If you step up to the $35/month Visible+ plan or $45/month Visible+ Pro plan, you'll also unlock unlimited premium data in the U.S. and unlimited talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada.

How to activate TravelPass

You must have cellular data roaming turned on in order for Verizon TravelPass to work. So before purchasing or activating a TravelPass, make sure your phone's data roaming is turned on.

Then, you must notify Verizon in order to activate any international plan, including TravelPass. The easiest way to notify Verizon and add TravelPass to your Verizon plan is by texting "Travel" to 4004 from your Verizon phone.

You can also activate TravelPass using the My Verizon app by taking these steps:

  1. Tap Account and select Manage plans and services.
  2. Choose the line you want to manage and press on International Plans.
  3. Pick Add new plan and follow the prompts.

Your TravelPass session automatically starts once you use your device in a TravelPass-enabled country.

Remember, Verizon will only charge you for TravelPass each day you use your phone outside the country. You can activate TravelPass while in the U.S. without worrying about the $10/day charge.

How to turn off Verizon TravelPass

You can turn off Verizon TravelPass on Verizon's website or through the My Verizon app.

To turn off TravelPass on Verizon's website:

  1. Head to your Verizon account and choose My Plan.
  2. Under International Details, choose Plans Traveling Outside the U.S. > Manage Plan.
  3. Check the TravelPass box next to each line you wish to remove TravelPass from.
  4. Choose the day you wish to end TravelPass access.
  5. Click Confirm to remove TravelPass.

To turn off TravelPass through the Verizon app:

  1. Tap on your account, then Plans > International Plans.
  2. Tap on your current TravelPass.
  3. Tap Remove.

You must have a 4G or 5G World device

To use Verizon's TravelPass, you must have a 4G or 5G World device. A world device is a phone that is compatible in over 220 countries and can run on GSM technology, the global standard for cell phone technology.

The MyVerizon app's International Ready Check feature can help you determine if your phone can be used outside of the US.

How to get free TravelPass

Customers grandfathered in on select Verizon plans, like 5G Get More or 5G Do More, can get TravelPass days for free. You can accumulate up to 12 free days of TravelPass, but each free day expires after 12 months. To other customers, Verizon offers two free days of TravelPass per year if you activate a Verizon Visa credit card.

For new customers, your best bet for discounted TravelPass days is to select an Unlimited Welcome or Unlimited Plus plan and pick the TravelPass as one of your perks. That'll get you three days of TravelPass each month for $10/month.

How to avoid Verizon TravelPass charges

You may decide not to use your phone on certain days while traveling to avoid Verizon charging you for a TravelPass day. Just remember that your phone may still use data without your knowledge. For instance, apps can run in the background, or your phone may automatically check for updates, causing it to connect to data services.

The best way to avoid Verizon TravelPass charges while traveling is to turn off cellular data or data roaming. The process for doing this varies depending on your phone type, but for most devices, you should be able to turn cellular data and/or data roaming off in the Cellular or Wireless and networks menus in your phone's settings.
