Mint Mobile has introduced its first unlimited data plan—and it's set to be one of the most affordable on the market. The carrier's new Unlimited Data Plan includes unlimited talk, text, and 4G LTE data, plus a 5GB mobile hotspot and 5G access—all for just $30/month for the first three months. Here are the key details of the Mint’s new unlimited plan.

About Mint's $30 Unlimited Plan

Like Mint's other plans, its new Unlimited Data Plan is offered as a multi-month bundle. You'll pay $90 upfront for three months of unlimited talk, text, and data. The plan offers unlimited high-speed data, with the potential of slower speeds if you use more than 35GB/month. Plus, you'll automatically access either 4G LTE or 5G speeds—whichever network is fastest near you.

Mint's Unlimited plan includes 5GB of dedicated mobile hotspot data for access on the go, and free calling to border neighbors Mexico and Canada (we imagine Mint owner and Canadian native Ryan Reynolds made sure of that!).

At first blush, Mint’s plan would appear to be the cheapest unlimited option on the market, with only Verizon-owned Visible coming close. However, while Mint may crush the competition on price, keep in mind that its unlimited plan features a hard data throttle as opposed to the monthly data deprioritization thresholds of these competing plans. Translation: With these other plans, you may or may not still be able to enjoy 4G LTE speeds after exceeding your monthly data threshold, depending on network congestion. With Mint’s plan, you’ll risk being slowed waaaay down to glacial 2G speeds when your network is busy once you’ve exceeded 35GB in a month.

Having said that, 35GB is a massive amount of data, and most customers won't come close to reaching it—meaning Mint's plan is a serious contender for the best prepaid unlimited plan on the market.

Mint's new unlimited plan stacks up very nicely against unlimited offerings from other MVNOs. Its main competition is Visible's $25 Unlimited Plan, which offers access to Verizon's best-in-market 4G LTE network plus unlimited hotspot data. But on the $25 plan, your data can be deprioritized at any time (this differs from Visible's $35 and $45 plan, which provide unlimited premium data). Mint's 4G LTE network through T-Mobile provides access to the carrier's nationwide 5G network (where Verizon's 5G access is still limited to specific hotspots), and it also includes calling to Mexico and Canada, which Visible does not.

Metro by T-Mobile offers more in the way of perks, like Google One storage, free Amazon Prime, and a larger hotspot allowance on its $60 Unlimited Plan—but you'll pay twice as much for the privilege than Mint. And though Cricket similarly offers more hotspot data on its $55 Supreme Unlimited plan, Mint's unlimited plan is still cheaper and much more attractive.

Other Plans from Mint Mobile

If you don't need unlimited data, check out Mint's limited data plans instead. Offered in 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month bundles, the carrier provides everything from a bite-sized 3GB plan (perfect for basic browsing) to a meatier 12GB plan (excellent for streaming the day away).

The longer you sign up for, the cheaper your plan gets. And like its new unlimited data option, all Mint plans offer unlimited talk and text, mobile hotspot, and free 5G access. Just make sure you're set up with a 5G-compatible phone!
