MintSIM has done away with a new customer promotion and revamped pricing for all of its plans.
The brand was launched almost exactly a year ago by Costa Mesa, CA-based MVNO Ultra Mobile, offering steep discounts to customers willing to pay for three, six or twelve months of service in advance.
The company had been running a 50% promotion for new customers that lasted 3 months, after which prices went back up. Perhaps sensing that this hewed too close to a mainstream carrier move--MintSIM prides itself on being different--the company has terminated the promotion, and lowered prices for all of their plans, for everybody.
Take for example MintSIM's 10GB data/unlimited talk and text plan. The previous promo allowed new customers to pay $20/month for the first 3 months of the plan, then kicked it up to $40/month once the three months expired. That same plan now costs $25/month for 3 months, for everybody.
The more modest 5GB plan went for $16.50 a month on the new customer promo, then shot up to $33/month afterwards. That plan now goes for $20/month for 3 months.
Weirdly, the pricing per month goes up if you pay for 6 months, but stays the same if you pay for 12 months. That $20/month 5GB plan goes up to $24/month for 6 months, but stays at $20/month for 12.
The real tragedy is that if you paid in advance for a 12-month plan at a higher rate as recently as yesterday, you can't transition to the new lower rates for that same 12-month period (as far as we know).
MintSIM is an online-only brand, so if you want to shop for one of their plans, the easiest way to do so is by using WhistleOut's search engine. Mint runs on T-Mobile's GSM network, which is known for providing particularly great coverage in metropolitan regions.
MintSIM calls their 3, 6 and 12 months plans "Clever AF," "Still Really Clever" and "Cleverer AF," respectively. They've pointed out in the past that AF is short for "As a Fox," not. . . well, you know the rest.
