T-Mobile Starlink open beta: Fast facts
- T-Mobile is offering free access to its Starlink beta to customers from all wireless carriers until July.
- Customers can send and receive satellite-powered text messages in areas with a clear view of the sky.
- Eligible devices include the iPhone 14 and newer, Galaxy S21 and newer, and the Google Pixel 9 series.
- Customers who try Starlink's coverage and like it should switch to T-Mobile before March 1 to score an Early Adopter Discount once the service is fully rolled out.
T-Mobile announced it's opening its Starlink beta to customers from all wireless carriers, including AT&T and Verizon. The service doesn't require a satellite phone, so any customers with a newer Samsung Galaxy device or Apple iPhone can sign up. T-Mobile stated the open beta will last until July. After that, customers from other carriers will lose access and Starlink will become an optional perk for most T-Mobile plans.
To join the service, customers must visit T-Mobile's website and sign up. Starlink's beta currently allows customers to send and receive satellite-powered text messages in areas where no terrestrial cell service exists.
What is T-Mobile's Starlink coverage?
T-Mobile's Starlink coverage is a way for the carrier to offer satellite-powered phone service in areas with no towers nearby.
Starlink itself is a satellite internet service. It uses low-orbit satellites to beam internet connectivity to the ground. In 2022, T-Mobile announced a partnership with Starlink to expand its network into areas with no coverage. While T-Mobile has the nation's largest 5G network, there are massive gaps in its rural service. Using satellite connectivity for wireless coverage allows T-Mobile to eliminate dead zones as long as customers have a clear view of the sky.
How does the T-Mobile Starlink beta work?
T-Mobile Starlink connects to your device using an eSIM (a digital SIM card). When your phone detects it no longer has service from a local tower, the Starlink eSIM will automatically turn on and connect to the satellite network. Starlink's wireless connectivity is technically an emergency service. Most of the time, your phone will be connected to the local network on the ground.
Who can join the T-Mobile Starlink beta?

Customers from any wireless carrier in the United States can join the T-Mobile Starlink beta for free.
We reported last year that T-Mobile and Starlink planned to roll out their service in 2025. On February 9, 2025—during a Superbowl commercial—T-Mobile announced it was opening the Starlink beta for all wireless customers, regardless of their current carrier. This includes customers from major carriers like AT&T and Verizon, and smaller MVNOs like Visibile, Mint Mobile, and Consumer Cellular.
While anyone can sign up, the beta is still limited in what the service can do. Starlink's coverage currently only offers texting and will only be available until July 2025. While T-Mobile says customers will eventually receive voice service through Starlink, it's not clear if that will be part of the beta.
