Twigby Mobile Review: After 2 months of testing, here's what I think

You might not catch sight of Twigby Mobile splashed across billboards or headlining blockbuster ads. Instead, Twigby quietly assures significant savings on your monthly phone bill, catering to the practicalities of everyday communication needs. With plans starting as low as $5/month for 2GB of data (increased to $15/month after three months), you can expect a straightforward phone service that can meet your needs.

I tested Twigby Mobile's service for nearly two months. Overall, my speeds were consistently fast and I had coverage in every place I tested; however, working remotely was hindered by the lack of dedicated hotspot data.

Let's dive into what Twigby has to offer and if it can truly stand as the frugal caller's champion.

The company's focus on customer convenience is evident through its month-to-month service structure, giving you the flexibility to switch whenever you want. However, you might want to stay on for at least three months, as this is when you get the best prices with Twigby's introductory rates.

Here's a look at Twigby Mobile's plan lineup:

For my review, I sampled the 20GB plan. At the introductory price of $10/month, it represents significant savings, even after that intro rate increases to $35/month after the three-month promo period. Other carriers often charge much more for similar data allowances, making Twigby Mobile an attractive choice for cost-conscious consumers.

As a quick comparison, Verizon’s prepaid 15GB plan is its closest offering to Twigby’s 20GB plan, but it also costs $35/month. That gives the Twigby plan 5GB more value for the price, all while retaining the same network coverage. 

Twigby Mobile’s straightforward approach means each plan gives you a set amount of high-speed data, free of overage charges or complicated billing. This makes managing phone expenses simpler. Additionally, the flexibility to change plans without annual contracts allows you to adapt your mobile service to your changing needs.

It's important to note, though, that while Twigby's plans are budget-friendly, there is no completely unlimited premium (i.e., high-speed) data option. Instead, once you reach the high-speed threshold for each data plan, your speeds will be throttled all the way down to 2G for the remainder of your billing cycle. Other Verizon MVNOs, like Visible, opt to deprioritize your data—this means you could potentially and temporarily be slowed down if the network is busy, but that’s not necessarily a guarantee. With Twigby Mobile, it is.

This might be an issue for some, but if you frequently use Wi-Fi or have moderate data needs, the high-speed caps may be adequate.

It's also worth noting that Twigby data does not roll over. It simply resets at your next renewal. If you consistently find yourself using less data than you're paying for, consider switching to a smaller plan.

What about Twigby's mobile hotspot?

A notable absence in Twigby Mobile's offerings is dedicated mobile hotspot data. Any data you use for hotspot will count against your high-speed data limit. If this is a non-negotiable for your mobile data use (like if, say, you often work remotely and need to tether your devices), Twigby Mobile might not meet your needs.

On the other hand, if you feel like your Twigby plan has enough data to support your standard mobile data usage and hotspot, there is good news. Twigby lets hotspot data flow at full speeds where a lot of other carriers (like Visible) put bandwidth limits on tethering. I put this to the test and found that speeds topped out at around 60Mbps—slower than when testing speeds directly on my phone, but still very fast, especially given the phone’s limited tethering capabilities and splitting bandwidth.

In addition to its domestic benefits, Twigby Mobile offers some enticing international perks. Customers can make calls to numbers in over 80 countries and text numbers across the globe. These offerings stand out among the MVNO crowd where not all carriers include such generous international perks. Popular Mint Mobile, for example, doesn’t include international calling except to Mexcio and Canada.

Twigby Mobile doesn’t offer any international roaming, which is a bummer, because it doesn’t give me a chance to try to get a paid-for trip abroad from my bosses to test out the service in another country. Still, the carrier can’t get too big of a knock for this, as only a small handful of MVNOs offer international roaming perks.

Activating a Twigby Mobile plan couldn’t be much simpler. Twigby sent me a SIM kit, I popped in the SIM card, and *BOOM* the phone was connected. Twigby also recently added eSIM support, which allows you to activate your plan without a physical SIM. Had this been an option for me when I tried out Twigby's service, I would have opted for it—eSIMs allow you to instantly activate your phone plan rather than waiting for a SIM card to come in the mail. I'm very glad to see that Twigby Mobile has now added eSIM activation to its plans.

Not only does it mean that Twigby customers are on one of the nation's most acclaimed networks, but it also ensures they have access to the growing prevalence of Verizon's 5G service where available.

My everyday personal phone plan is on Verizon, so I already had a good idea of how Twigby would have me covered in the fairly densely populated suburb of Temecula, California. Through my time with its services, the expectations I had were totally met. I never really had any issues with my Twigby Mobile service as I went out and about to run errands across town or met up with friends down in nearby San Diego, a decidedly larger and more urban environment. Not only was service reliable and consistent, I seemed to always be on the 5G network. 

Perhaps most impressive was the performance I encountered in the notoriously challenging reception areas of rural Temecula wine country. While many carriers fall short in this spotty area, my Twigby Mobile service, riding on Verizon's network, maintained a strong signal.

Living in a well-populated suburb, I'm never too concerned about the reliability of coverage—the major networks have my read covered pretty well. Instead, my primary concern is speed. I wanted to know that the network could provide me with the bandwidth I needed.

As you can see, across several speed tests I took at various times of day throughout the month, Twigby's service never strayed too far away from 150Mbps. This, of course, is really more speed than I ever actually need, but it's nice to know I have the speed for downloading big files and streaming high-quality audio and video. On the practical side, I never felt any hiccups when watching some YouTube videos, playing some games, or simply browsing the internet. 

I did notice, however, that when comparing my Verizon phone to the Twigby device side by side, Verizon's speeds were always slightly better—usually about 20Mbps faster. This isn't a huge surprise—the major carriers tend to reserve the best service for those signed on directly with them. Still, the slightly faster speeds mean very little with Twigby's speeds already being very fast.

To get an idea of how effective Twigby Mobile’s customer service is, I tested how responsive they are and how easy it is to get to a human representative and it's not the easiest. First, though not made very clear, Twigby only offers online assistance, which can be a struggle for anybody wanting to speak with a representative over the phone. I resorted to Google to find a Twigby contact number but that only led to a pre-recorded message that tells you to go online. Online chat can be pretty responsive when representatives are online, but I must have done most of my tests after Twigby's working hours because I mostly had to talk to bots. To be fair, when they are online, you can get a human almost instantly. 

At the end of the day, the effectiveness of customer service depends on how satisfactorily and promptly they resolve your issues. I was only really able to test responsiveness by way of how easy it was to get a hold of them. While it's not the most streamlined service, it at least feels on par with what you'd expect out of modern customer service.
