Somewhere over the rainbow lies the Paradise of the Pacific: Hawaii. Lying 2,000 miles west of California, the Hawaiian islands are regarded as some of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Of course, even paradise needs cell service. While each of the three big carriers—AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile—boast coverage throughout the state, not every carrier is strong throughout all of the islands. Our coverage check tool can help you quickly find the best service near you. Just type in your address to explore popular cell phone plans in your area.

Below, we’ll help you compare coverage maps to see where service is strong throughout Hawaii from each carrier. Whether you’re in desperate need of some island time or making a permanent move to the Aloha State, we can help you find the coverage you need.

How good is phone coverage in Hawaii?

Tropical rainforests, emerald waters, shaved ice—are we giving you the travel bug yet? There’s a reason Hawaii is a much-desired destination for people worldwide. However, coverage in the Aloha State is not as straightforward as in other areas of the United States.

While AT&T has the best 4G state-wide, coverage across the island varies state by state. Where one carrier shines, another might not. To make it even trickier, one side of an island may have better service than the other side because of the diverse geography. The good news is that highly populated areas and popular travel destinations should not be an issue no matter who you go with.

Why it's important to pick the right coverage

From the metropolis of Honolulu to the majestic Waipio Valley, picking the right carrier means having service where you need it most.

For travelers, choosing the right coverage will mean navigating the islands without the threat of a dropped signal. Conversely, for locals, having the right carrier is the difference between a reliable connection and constant frustration.

Coverage in Hawaii at a glance

It’s important to note that 69.4% of Hawaii’s population lives in Honolulu, Oahu, with the second-most-populated areas being on the islands of Hawaii and Maui. Searching for coverage in these places will not be a problem, while the more rural areas of the islands may prove less reliable.

AT&T takes the cake with the best state-wide 4G LTE coverage, with Verizon close behind. T-Mobile comes in last for 4G but leads the way in 5G coverage. AT&T and Verizon make an effort with their respective 5G networks but struggle to keep up.

What we love
  • Nearly comprehensive coverage from all three carriers on Oahu
  • Strong 5G presence by T-Mobile on all islands
  • Impressive AT&T rural coverage, particularly on the Big Island
What could be improved
  • Poor 4G LTE and 5G coverage in the rural area of East Maui
  • Lack of Verizon 5G on the Big Island

Molokai AT&T

While AT&T has the most 4G state-wide, T-Mobile and Verizon favor specific islands when it comes to coverage. For example, The Garden Island of Kauai is best served by Verizon, while The Valley Isle of Maui owes it’s nearly comprehensive service to T-Mobile.

At 91.5%, AT&T has arguably the best 4G coverage across the islands. It’s followed closely behind Verizon at 86.5%. Even T-Mobile, with 68.1% offers strong 4G coverage where Hawaii needs it most.

T-Mobile outshines its competition when it comes to 5G. With coverage across 78.3% of the state, all major cities will have access to T-Mobile’s superior speeds. AT&T comes in second at 26.8% with Verizon rounding out the pack at 11.6%.

In the end, numbers only tell part of the story, particularly in Hawaii, where coverage varies by island. You can check for coverage in your specific neighborhood, by entering your address in our cell phone plans locator. Or, if you’d rather shop for coverage in person, use our store locator to find the closest Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, or Cricket store near you.

You can also use our interactive coverage maps to view and compare cell service in your area.

AT&T network coverage in Hawaii: Best for the Big Island and Oahu

AT&T’s 4G has the widest reach. At 91.5%, even the majority of rural areas, from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the Punalu’u community on Oahu, boast solid connectivity.

While other carriers give AT&T a run for its money on other islands, AT&T provides the most comprehensive 4G on the Big Island. Save for a few coastal and mountainous areas, such as the famous Waipi’o Valley and the remote community of Kalapana, 4G will be available even in most Natural Parks and Reserves.

AT&T’s 5G, though inferior to T-Mobile’s, makes a strong presence in all of Hawaii’s urban areas. Honolulu, Waipahu, Kailua-Kona, Hilo, and Lahaina will all experience 5G speeds with spotty pockets here and there. For example, along Route 72 between Honolulu and East Honolulu. But rest assured that where 5G wanes, 4G remains.

Best AT&T phone plan

AT&T’s unlimited phone plans cost a pretty penny, but if you are willing to pay, you may as well go for the plan with the most perks. For unlimited premium data (meaning no slowdowns, ever), we recommend AT&T’s $90/month Premium 2.0 plan. With Premium 2.0, you’ll get the best of AT&T’s expansive coverage, including a 100GB hotspot, perfect for powering your devices where WiFi is unavailable.

If you’re looking for a family plan, consider AT&T’s Unlimited Your Way, a multiline model that allows you to customize each line on your account while reaping additional savings. Living the Ohana way doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank.

Best phone plans on AT&T's network

There are more than just AT&T phone plans on Big Blue’s network. Most people don’t realize that they can get the same AT&T coverage for a fraction of the price by going with a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. MVNOs piggyback service off the big carriers' cell towers but don’t have to pay for the upkeep, saving you money.

When it comes to MVNOs on AT&T’s network, we like Red Pocket’s $30/month Unlimited plan, which is $45.99 a month cheaper than AT&T’s Unlimited Premium PL plan, or, to put it another way, a savings of $551.88 a year! With the Unlimited plan, you’ll still enjoy unlimited talk, text, and data with a solid 50GB of guaranteed high speeds before any chance of slowdowns.

Cricket Wireless is another good choice if you’re looking for hotspot data but don’t want to pay top-dollar prices. With the $55/month Supreme Unlimited plan, you’ll get just that: unlimited high-speed data and a whopping 50GB hotspot. Cricket also throws in an HBO Max subscription and 150GB of cloud storage, making this MVNO a competitive choice.

Verizon network coverage in Hawaii: Most 4G on Kauai

Reaching 86.5% of the state, Verizon’s 4G is second only to AT&T. While Verizon’s 4G doesn’t reign supreme across the islands overall, it does offer the most comprehensive coverage on the oldest and greenest island of Kauai. Highly populated areas, like the town of Kapa’a, will have reliable 4G save for the far reaches of the eastern shore. If you’re planning on visiting one of Kauai’s majestic parks, you can expect to have service in the valleys and at lower elevations, though dead pockets remain among the central and western Forest Reserves.

At 11.6% coverage, Verizon’s 5G has a long way to go. Big Red has yet to make any 5G presence on the Big Island and offers little to no coverage across the smaller islands of Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai. However, Verizon’s ultra-fast 5G can be found in the urban areas of Maui and Oahu. In Honolulu, where the majority of Hawaii’s population lives, 5G will be within reach. Just be mindful of dead zones in Portlock, Kapiolani Park, and near the Diamond Head State Monument.

Best Verizon phone plan

If you live in an area with strong Verizon 5G, we recommend the $80/month Unlimited Plus plan. Yes, it’s pricey, but with this top-tier plan, you’ll get truly unlimited premium data on Verizon’s fastest 5G Ultra-Wideband network (as opposed to basic 5G on its Nationwide network) as well as a 30GB hotspot allowance. Plus, you can bundle in other streaming and subscription services at a discounted rate, such as a Wal-Mart subscription or the Disney bundle, each for $10/month extra.

Best phone plans on Verizon's network

Not everyone needs a hefty hotspot allotment or unlimited premium data. If you want to get the best from Verizon without paying out the wazoo, Verizon MVNO’s are some of our favorites on the market. Take Visible, for example, which offers an unlimited data plan (with unlimited hotspot!) for only $25 per month. The only downside is the potential for slower speeds when the network is busy, though we’ve never experienced a single day of slowdowns in our first-hand testing.

While you can opt for even faster speeds on Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband network with the higher-end $35/month Visible+ and $45/month Visible+Pro plans, Verizon’s 5G footprint is so scant that we would only consider an upgrade if you are within its 5G reach—namely, in and around Honolulu.

If you’re looking for a substitute for a Verizon family plan, US Mobile is a smart choice. You can opt for one line on the Unlimited Premium plan for $44/month. T-Mobile network coverage in Hawaii: Best overall coverage on Maui

At 69.1% T-Mobile's 4G adequately covers all major cities and tourist destinations. It particularly shines on the island of Oahu, where coastal coverage is nearly foolproof. Save for a portion of Route 93 on the North Western coast near Kuaokala Forest Reserve, shoreline coverage is available no matter where you’re swimming and sunbathing. You can expect the same on the Big Island, though inland areas will prove unreliable. Maui follows suit with access to T-Mobile’s 4G in all major cities. Just don’t count on 4G coverage in the West Maui Forest Reserve or in most of East Maui.

If you have a need for speed, T-Mobile is your best bet. At 78.3%, T-Mobile’s 5G network blows its competitors out of the water with a 5G presence on every island. You can count on these superior speeds in all of Hawaii’s major cities as well as in rural areas of Maui, Oahu, and Molokai. In fact, T-Mobile has the most comprehensive coverage on Maui when you consider its 4G and 5G combined. Maui’s 5G dead zones are nearly inconsequential with spotty service limited to Hana Forest Reserve, Haleakalā National Park, and ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve. All this to say, if you live on Maui and have a 5G-capable device, T-Mobile is a wise choice.

Best T-Mobile phone plan

Getting the most from T-Mobile doesn’t have to mean maxing out your wallet. Our favorite is the $85/month Experience More plan, which includes a unlimited premium, a 60GB high-speed hotspot, and perks including subscriptions to Netflix and Apple TV+.

Searching for an MVNO on T-Mobile’s network? Look no further than Mint Mobile. Mint’s Unlimited plan includes 50GB of premium data plus a 20GB hotspot for as low as $15/month for the first three months. That’s less than a quarter of the cost of T-Mobile’s $70/month Magenta plan and includes a larger hotspot. Mint sells its plans in multi-month packages—3-, 6-, and 12-month plans paid upfront. You can renew for a full year and lock in that low price of $30/month ($360 total) or renew for six months at $35/month or three months at $40/month.  After the first three months, your renewal price goes up. However you choose to pay, you will ultimately save in the long run.

Methodology: How we determined the best cell
phone coverage in Hawaii

To determine the best cell phone coverage in Hawaii, our analysis focused on the major carriers' 4G LTE and 5G network reach (AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile). In addition to our proprietary coverage data, we analyzed the coverage map data to specify strong and weak points across all of the (populated) Hawaiian islands. We also incorporated insights from independent third-party assessments and then chose the best carrier plans and those from their respective MVNOs. We recognize that network coverage can vary over time, so we pledge to update our information and rankings to mirror these dynamics consistently.
