The IRS isn't the reason your federal tax refund takes so long to hit your account—your bank is. Traditional banks sit on incoming deposits until the scheduled release date, meaning your return is technically ready, but your bank just isn't giving it to you right away.
Some banking apps release your refund the moment they receive it, and the difference can be up to five days.
Keep reading to find out which apps send your refund to you as soon as possible.

1. Cash App
Cash App has taken the tax season by storm because filing through the app can earn you $5. You can file your taxes through Cash App for free, and your federal refund can reach you up to five days early. There's no need to be suspicious either, I already filed through Cash App and it went superbly.

I loved filing through Cash App. It was super intuitive and easy to use from start to finish, and I didn't doubt it for a second. The interface walks you through everything step by step, and it handles more complex situations than you'd expect. The whole thing took me under 90 minutes for both my federal and state taxes combined. There is one catch, though: You have to file on the desktop version to get free filing.
Cash App is also offering a $5 bonus when you file, but it does make you work for it a little. You'll need to enter a referral code into your account before you start filing, so don't skip that step. Once you've used a referral code, you'll have 14 days to file your taxes or send at least $5 through the app, earning you the $5 bonus.

How early tax refund deposits actually work
When you direct deposit your tax refund, the IRS sends a payment to your bank with a scheduled release date. Traditional banks hold that payment until the official date, even if the funds have already arrived on their end.
Banking apps that offer early deposits release the money the moment they receive the payment file, which can be several days ahead of schedule.
2. Chime
Chime offers the same early refund window as Cash App (up to five days before a traditional bank would post it) with free filing for both federal and state taxes. The benefit of using Chime is that everything happens inside the Chime app itself. Unlike with Cash App, which only lets you file for free on desktop, Chime keeps it all in the app. There's no bouncing between platforms or logging into a separate tax tool.
I've been using Chime for several months now and my monthly direct deposit consistently lands two days earlier than it did at my old bank. The same applies to your tax refund, and you can get it even faster too. Traditional banks hold your money until the official release date, while Chime releases it the moment the funds arrive.

Chime includes a $20 SpotMe boost as an added perk when you file, but it's worth being clear about what that actually is. SpotMe is an overdraft feature. It lets you spend money you don't have, without having to pay a fee (only for $20). Getting into the habit of overdrafting while you wait on a refund is a pattern worth avoiding, even when there's no fee attached.

Save more than just a few days
Getting your refund a few days early is great, but cutting your monthly bills down year-round is even better. If you're overpaying on your cell phone plan, switching could save you hundreds annually.

3. Varo
Most banking apps partner with a bank to hold and manage your money. But Varo is the bank. It holds its own federal banking license, which means Varo directly covers your deposits, rather than through a third-party finance company.
Varo offers up to five days early on tax refund deposits, and it works regardless of where you file your return. You don't have to use Varo's in-app filing to get the early deposit benefit.

That said, Varo does offer free in-app filing covering both federal and state returns, which is convenient if you want everything handled in one place at no cost. The filing experience is quick and straightforward, and your refund lands directly in your Varo account when your refund processes.
Still paying full price for your phone plan?
Switching carriers is easier than it sounds, and the savings are real. Switching to a smaller carrier that still operates on a major network can save you hundreds every year.

4. H&R Block Spruce
Spruce is H&R Block's free banking app, not a tax filing tool. However, you can get your refund up to 5 days early when you send your direct deposit to Spruce.
If you're already filing with H&R Block, getting your refund deposited into Spruce is the easiest way to get it fast. You have to file with H&R Block, whether you prefer to go to an office or use the online tools. Once you finish, you simply swap your direct deposit details at the end of your return and Spruce handles the rest.
Spruce doesn't have its own built-in free filing the way Chime and Varo do. If you plan on using H&R Block, Spruce is your best bet to get your refund early. If you weren't planning to use H&R Block, consider whether setting up both is the right move for you.
5. Current
Current is a banking app with no monthly fees, no minimum balance, and access to thousands of fee-free ATMs. For tax refunds, Current can get your money to you one to two days before the scheduled date. You can also file for free in the app through Column Tax.

Current's return window is later than the other apps on this list, but two days early is still better than a traditional bank. If you're already a Current member, you should file and wait for your return. If not, then there's no compelling reason to switch just for tax season. Instead, check out Cash App or Chime.
Tips to get your tax refund as fast as possible
File electronically
E-filed returns are processed in about three weeks. Paper returns take six to eight weeks, and the IRS is phasing out paper refund checks entirely, so direct deposit is becoming the only option anyway.
File early
The IRS processes returns in the order they arrive. Filing in February or March puts you ahead of the April rush and reduces the chance of delays from high processing volume.
Double-check your routing and account numbers
Mistyped numbers are the most common reason refunds get delayed. Copy your numbers directly from your banking app rather than typing them from memory.
Match your name exactly
Your name on your tax return has to match the name on your banking app account exactly. This is especially easy to overlook with newer accounts or joint filings, and a mismatch can push your refund back by days.
Tax season banking apps: FAQ
Is the early tax refund deposit actually guaranteed?
No, there is no guarantee to an early tax refund deposit. The approximate number of days is the maximum possible, not a promise. Actual timing depends entirely on when the IRS submits your payment file.
Do I have to file my taxes through the app to get my refund early?
No, you don't have to file through the app to get your refund early. You can file anywhere and still direct your refund by entering the app's routing and account numbers. The only exception is Cash App, where the full early deposit benefit applies when you file through Cash App Taxes.
Can I get my state tax refund early too?
The early deposit features on these apps apply to federal refunds only. State refund timing depends on your state's own processing schedule.
Which banking app gets your tax refund the fastest?
Cash App, Chime, Varo, and Spruce all advertise up to five days early, while Current offers up to two. In practice, the biggest factor is how early you filed and whether your return had any issues.
