If you want to take your Straight Talk phone to a different carrier, you'll first need to make sure it's unlocked from your current network. If you have an iPhone, Straight Talk will unlock your phone automatically after a certain period of time; if you have an Android device, you'll need to request an unlock code once you've met Straight Talk's unlock policy requirements.

The process is super easy, no matter which phone you have. Let's run through Straight Talk's unlock policy and the steps to unlock your Straight Talk phone.

Straight Talk Unlock Requirements

Before you attempt to unlock your Straight Talk phone, be sure you meet Straight Talk's unlock policy eligibility requirements. Note that the policy differs slightly based on whether or not your phone is activated on a Verizon-backed Straight Talk plan.

The carrier will unlock most phones for free, as long as you've met the following criteria:

  • Your Straight Talk phone has been activated for at least 12 months on a Straight Talk plan.
    • For phones tied to Verizon-backed plans activated on or after November 23, 2021, your phone must have been activated for at least 60 days.
  • Your Straight Talk phone has not been reported as stolen, lost, or associated with fraudulent activity.
  • Your phone is in good working condition, and your account is in good standing.

If you're deployed on active duty military service but don't meet the above criteria, Straight Talk will honor your unlocking request as long as you can provide deployment papers (more on this process below).

For other Straight Talk customers who can’t meet the unlock policy requirements—or who want or need to unlock their phones early—you can still request a phone unlock; however, Straight Talk may charge you up to $300 based on how long your phone has been activated on your plan.

How to Unlock a Straight Talk Phone

Unlocking your Straight Talk phone varies slightly based on whether you have an Apple iPhone or an Android device. Once Straight Talk receives your request, it can take up to two business days for the carrier to process it and unlock your phone.

Unlocking a Straight Talk iPhone

For iPhone users, Straight Talk automatically unlocks your phone once you've met all eligibility requirements. This means for all customers who activated their Straight Talk phones before November 23, 2021, your phone will automatically be unlocked after 12 months of active service with Straight Talk.

If you're on a Verizon network plan, and you activated that plan on or after November 23, 2021, Straight Talk will automatically unlock your phone after 60 days.

If you need to request an unlock before your eligibility window has elapsed, you can contact Straight Talk at (888) 442-5102.

Unlocking a Straight Talk Android phone

Android device owners must request a phone unlock from Straight Talk—it will not be given automatically. Your unlock eligibility differs slightly based on when you originally activated your phone with Straight Talk and whether your Straight Talk plan operates on Verizon's network or on either AT&T's or T-Mobile's network—jump back up to the unlock policy outlined above for a reminder on what those requirements are.

You can check your phone's eligibility to ensure you've met Straight Talk's unlock criteria. Then to unlock your Straight Talk phone:

  1. Retrieve your phone's IMEI number. This is your device's unique identification number. Dial *#06# on your phone to find out what it is or check your phone's settings.
  2. Call (888) 442-5102 to request an unlock. Note that it can take up to two business days for Straight Talk to process your request.
  3. Receive your unlock code via email. This is usually a number of 10 to 15 digits. Note that Straight Talk only provides emailed unlock codes at this time—you cannot get one via text message.
  4. Follow the instructions in the email for how to finish unlocking your Straight Talk phone.

Is my Straight Talk phone unlocked?

Once you've either placed your unlock request (for Android users) or waited out the required activation period (for iPhone users), you can check to see if your Straight Talk phone is unlocked by calling (888) 442-5102.

Military Unlock Requirements

Military members may be deployed or relocated outside of Straight Talk's network area on active duty orders. If that's the case, and you need to switch carriers before you've met your eligibility requirements, Straight Talk will unlock your phone without issue or additional fees. You'll simply need to provide proof of deployment or PCS.

Contact Straight Talk (888) 442-5102 and request details on where and how to submit your documents.

Unlocking a Straight Talk Phone: FAQs

What is Straight Talk's unlock policy?

Straight Talk's unlock policy allows you to unlock your phone once you've kept active service with the carrier for at least 12 months, or for Verizon-network plans, at least 60 days. You must have an account in good standing with no reports of loss, theft, or fraud associated with your phone, and your device must be in good working condition to request an unlock.

Can I unlock my Straight Talk phone myself?

No, you cannot unlock your Straight Talk phone yourself. If you have an iPhone, Straight Talk will unlock it automatically once you've completed the required activation period; for Android phones, you must contact Straight Talk to request an unlock code.

How much does it cost to unlock a Straight Talk phone?

It is free to unlock a Straight Talk phone as long as you've met the carrier's unlock policy requirements. If you cannot meet those requirements or want to unlock your phone before the mandatory activation period, you may have to pay up to $300.

Why do I have to unlock my Straight Talk phone?

You have to unlock your Straight Talk phone if you wish to take it with you when you switch to a different carrier. Most phones are "locked" to the carrier network that you purchase them through in order to keep you on that network. To switch to a different plan with someone else, you must first unlock the phone from your current network and ensure it's compatible with the carrier you want to switch to. Check out our guide to bringing your phone when you switch for even more details.
