But that doesn’t mean you can switch from network to network. Once you activate your phone on one, you’ll have to stick with it throughout your service agreement, so it's important to pick the network with the strongest coverage where you live.

Straight Talk Coverage Map
Straight Talk is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) using all three of the major U.S. cellular networks—AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile—to provide its customers with cellular service. Your first look into Straight Talk’s coverage should be a study of the 4G LTE coverage maps of each major network.
At a glance, these 4G LTE networks are rated as follows:
- Verizon—70% 4G LTE coverage
- AT&T—68% 4G LTE coverage
- T-Mobile—62% 4G LTE coverage
When you initially purchase a Straight Talk SIM card, the carrier will use your location to determine which carrier network is best in your area. After that, you're locked into that network for the duration of your plan. That's why your Straight Talk coverage is highly dependent on which carrier you opt for.

Straight Talk customers using Verizon’s 4G LTE network have access to the best LTE coverage in the country. Covering 70% of the U.S., Verizon’s LTE is especially strong in metropolitan areas. Additionally, the giant carrier also stands out when it comes to rural coverage, where both of its competitors don’t have the best reputations.

With 68% of the country covered, AT&T’s 4G LTE network scores second place in the nationwide coverage game. As with the other major carriers, AT&T has excellent service in urban areas. Unfortunately, those in rural areas might not get strong AT&T LTE coverage. Before signing on with Straight Talk on the AT&T network, check the map to make sure there is sufficient coverage for your area.

T-Mobile’s 4G LTE covers 63% of the country, putting it behind its two major competitors in third place. The “Un-carrier” provides excellent coverage in the metropolitan areas of the U.S., but suffers from the worst service in rural areas. If you’re thinking about joining Straight Talk on the T-Mobile network, you may want to check the map if you live outside of the city and suburbs.
Understanding network coverage percentage
As you’ve certainly noticed, we make it a point to emphasize the percentage of area covered when we talk about cellular networks. You might also be wondering why you’re only seeing 60–70% coverage (depending on the network), and much lower numbers with 5G networks, yet they are each labeled “nationwide.”
Keep in mind that the majority of the U.S. population lives in less than 4% of the country’s landmass. When carriers say they have nationwide coverage, they’re really just saying they have the majority of people covered. We can assume that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have this 4% of the landmass pretty well covered.
A lot of our focus on coverage is for the rest of the country, where service may be a little spotty. The maps and percentages are great tools to help you understand how much of the country is covered by each carrier. By looking at these, you can gain a better idea of who is going to have better service when you’re out traveling the country, or if you’re in a very rural area.
Straight Talk Map: 5G Coverage
If you have a 5G-compatible phone, your Straight Talk plan allows you to connect to T-Mobile’s, AT&T’s, and Verizon’s 5G networks (depending on which network you’re activated on). T-Mobile is currently the leader in 5G coverage. However, regardless of which major network you may be on through Straight Talk, most of the 5G service currently available is essentially a slightly upgraded 4G LTE.
As things stand, the major carriers' 5G coverage are ranked as follows:
- T-Mobile—37% coverage
- AT&T—16% coverage
- Verizon—11% coverage
Whichever network your Straight Talk service is on, your 5G phone will automatically switch between 4G LTE and 5G (on the same network) based on which is the better-performing signal.
T-Mobile 5G coverage with Straight Talk
The coverage percentages are flipped around when you compare the 4G networks to the 5G networks. Here we find T-Mobile as the coverage leader of the newest generation of cellular network technology. Covering 37% of the country, T-Mobile 5G is completely outpacing its competitors, and you should expect 5G coverage in most urban areas of the country. While T-Mobile’s 37% coverage probably means it has better rural 5G than AT&T and Verizon, it’s still not exactly widespread and dependable.
AT&T 5G coverage with Straight Talk
You’re not seeing things. AT&T not only takes second place in 4G LTE, but it also is the first runner-up in 5G coverage. With 16% of the country covered, AT&T 5G has all the major cities covered, but you’re likely to have a hard time getting service as you travel farther away from the cities.
Verizon 5G coverage with Straight Talk
The long-standing king of 4G LTE lags behind both T-Mobile and AT&T when it comes to 5G service. That’s largely due to the fact that Verizon was concentrating on millimeter wave (mmWave) technology for its initial 5G rollout, which provides high speeds but low coverage. Eventually, Verizon did turn on the low-band 5G, which exponentially increased its reach. Its 11% coverage feels very low, but Verizon 5G does have a strong presence in most of the major urban areas. This gives Verizon enough coverage for it to comfortably say that it has nationwide 5G coverage.
Straight Talk Coverage Compared
Because Straight Talk operates on all three networks, it's difficult to definitively compare its coverage to that of other carriers—your coverage could be exactly the same if your MVNO is based on the same major network, or very different if it's not.
That said, let's take a look at two of Straight Talk's prepaid competitors—Visible and Mint Mobile—to see what kind of coverage these small but mighty carriers offer, and to give you a better idea of what similar prepaid carriers provide.

Visible operates on Verizon's best-in-class network and therefore benefits from the major carrier's dominance of 4G LTE coverage. Like many prepaid carriers, Visible customers may experience slower speeds during times of peak network congestion, but in our experience using the service, those occurrences were few and far between. The biggest drawback to using Verizon's network is its middling 5G coverage—while it does lay claim to the fastest 5G speeds thanks to its mmWave high-band network, most of Verizon's 5G is just a touch faster than 4G LTE at the moment, and it only covers 11% of the country.
Mint Mobile, on the other hand, benefits from T-Mobile's nation-leading 5G network, which covers 41% of the country in low- and mid-band 5G. And while T-Mobile's network may come last in 4G LTE coverage, its availability in urban and metro areas is pretty darn close to that of both Verizon and AT&T, so most Mint Mobile customers should get great coverage for both 4G and 5G speeds. If you're in a rural area, however, you're much less lucky: T-Mobile's rural coverage lags far behind its competitors.
All of these observances also apply to Straight Talk Wireless plans that tap into the Verizon and T-Mobile networks.
Straight Talk International Coverage
Currently, Straight Talk Wireless doesn't benefit from the international roaming agreements that its host carriers provide to their customers. If you're going to be traveling abroad, you'll need to purchase an international SIM card for your phone.

One consideration: Straight Talk also sells its plan SIM cards in retailers like Walmart, where you will be responsible for choosing your own plan and coverage network. If you haven't done your research before you buy your plan, you could end up choosing a network without the best coverage in your specific neighborhood.
