You don’t have to go to a carrier to buy your next prepaid phone plan. In fact, you can snag one on your next trip to the grocery store. Walmart sells a variety of prepaid plans from multiple carriers that fit most budgets and needs.

We think the best unlimited prepaid plan from Walmart is the Straight Talk Wireless Gold plan with 60GB of high-speed data. Customers on a budget are best served by the TracFone 2GB plan costing just $20/month. If you need a solid amount of mobile hotspot data, our pick is the Simple Mobile $60 Unlimited plan that offers a 15GB hotspot. Finally, the best plan for families is the Net10 Wireless super unlimited plan with four lines of unlimited data.

Straight Talk | Gold Unlimited | $55/month—Best overall unlimited prepaid plan from Walmart

The best unlimited prepaid plan from Walmart is the Straight Talk Gold Unlimited plan. This is one of Straight Talk’s top-rated plans and can offer coverage from AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile’s networks depending on where you live. It includes 60GB of high-speed data and 15GB of mobile hotspot data. There are also some pretty great perks with this plan, like 100GB of cloud storage and free international calling to Canada and Mexico. However, all this isn’t cheap—the plan costs a respectable $55/month.

We ranked this as the best unlimited prepaid plan because it has one of the largest high-speed data allowances of any plan Walmart sells. That said, this plan is really only great for single lines. Straight Talk and Walmart don’t offer a multi-line discount for this plan, so the cost adds up fast for families.

  • Pros: 60GB high-speed data, 15GB hotspot, 100GB cloud data, free international calling to Canada and Mexico
  • Cons: $55/month, no multi-line discount

Total Wireless | Total 5G Unlimited | $50/month—Best unlimited prepaid plan from Walmart runner-up

Our runner-up pick for the best unlimited prepaid plan from Walmart is Total Wireless' Total 5G Unlimited plan. This plan comes with unlimited talk, text, and data and 15GB of mobile hotspot data running on Verizon’s powerful 4G LTE and 5G networks. It also includes some solid perks, like free roaming in Canada and Mexico and a Disney+ premium subscription for six months. All this costs only $50/month.

There are some drawbacks to this plan. While your data is unlimited with no hard caps, it is subject to deprioritization at any time during times of high network traffic (though Total assures its customers that during “lightly loaded” traffic, customers should experience no discernible slowdowns). Plus, $50/month is still expensive even with the unlimited data and extra perks included.

  • Pros: Unlimited high-speed data, 15GB hotspot, Disney+ premium subscription for six months, free roaming in Canada and Mexico
  • Cons: $50/month, subject to deprioritization

TracFone | 2GB plan | $20/month—Overall best budget prepaid plan from Walmart

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, a great choice is the TracFone 2GB plan. It comes with unlimited talk and text plus 2GB of high-speed data. TracFone operates on most of the big carrier networks, so you could end up with coverage from Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile depending on where you live. Another great feature of TracFone is that this plan includes carryover data. This means if you don’t use your full 2GB allotment, all the extra data will continue to the next month as long as you don’t cancel your service.

There are some things to keep in mind about this plan. The biggest issue is that it’s a bare-bones plan and 2GB is not a lot of data. You should be alright if you frequently connect to Wi-Fi, but you will still need to monitor your data usage. The other issue is that this plan costs $20/month, which is pretty expensive for just 2GB of data. This is one of the cheaper plans available from Walmart, but you can find cheaper plans offering more data directly from carriers online.

  • Pros: Less expensive plan, unlimited talk and text
  • Cons: $20/month is expensive for 2GB of high-speed data

Simple Mobile | $60 Truly Unlimited plan | $60/month—Best overall mobile hotspot prepaid plan from Walmart

Our pick for the top mobile hotspot prepaid plan from Walmart is the Simple Mobile $60 unlimited plan. This plan includes unlimited high-speed data and a 15GB mobile hotspot on T-Mobile’s network, which is a decent amount of hotspot data for a prepaid plan. It also includes unlimited talk and text, 50GB of cloud storage, and free international roaming in Mexico and 15 other Latin-American countries.

This is one of the top plans available from Walmart, but keep in mind that your data is subject to deprioritization at any time in favor of T-Mobile customers. Another potential issue is that after using 40GB of data your data speeds will slow down. Most people won’t use that much data in a month, but it is something to watch out for if you are a heavy data user.

  • Pros: 15GB mobile hotspot, unlimited high-speed data on T-Mobile’s network, 50GB cloud storage, free international roaming to 16 Latin-American countries
  • Cons: $60/month is expensive, 40GB high-speed data limit

Ultra Mobile | Unlimited Plan | $49/month—Best mobile hotspot prepaid plan from Walmart runner-up

Our runner-up pick for the top mobile hotspot prepaid plan from Walmart is the Ultra Mobile Unlimited Plan. This plan has some similarities to the Simple Mobile Plan above. Both offer unlimited data with a 15GB mobile hotspot, and operate on T-Mobile’s network. However, this plan only costs $49/month, which is much cheaper than the Simple Mobile plan.

While the basic parts of the Ultra Mobile and Simple Mobile plans are similar, Ultra Mobile lacks all the perks found on the Simple Mobile plan. This plan includes international calls to 80 destinations, but it doesn’t include free international roaming or free cloud storage. If you don’t need extra perks, this is the mobile hotspot plan for you.

  • Pros: 15GB mobile hotspot, unlimited high-speed data on T-Mobile’s network, $49/month
  • Cons: 40GB high-speed data limit, no big perks

Walmart prepaid carriers

Walmart has a large selection of carriers to choose from. That said, not every store will offer the same options and you might find extra plans on Walmart.com. Plus, not every plan from each carrier is available. Some carriers only offer limited plans or refill cards.

Check out reviews and plan options from some of the top carriers available from Walmart:

Walmart Family Mobile

Walmart offers it's own lineup of phone plans with Walmart Family Mobile

Walmart also offers its own lineup of phone plans under its in-house carrier Walmart Family Mobile. As one of the newer MVNOs, it doesn’t have a ton of plan options right now and the prices aren’t great. However, it does offer service on Verizon’s network and includes a mobile hotspot with all its plans.

Walmart prepaid plans: pros and cons

Pros and cons of Walmart prepaid plans

Walmart makes it easy to buy a new prepaid phone plan. You can purchase them online or in-store and most plans offer both physical SIM cards or eSIM capability. That said, the plan selection isn’t great for all carriers and your family plan options are limited. You’ll probably also need to bring your own phone for these plans as Walmart doesn’t offer installment options like carriers can.

Pros:
  • Online and in-store options
  • Many different carriers
  • Cheap to expensive prices
  • SIM and eSIM options
Cons:
  • Limited options from each carrier
  • Bring your own phone
  • Poor family plan selection
