MobileX has a simple philosophy: You’re overpaying for data. To prove that, the cell phone carrier offers an AI-enabled trial period that creates a cheaper customized phone plan tailored to your needs.

We've been monitoring MobileX since it entered the MVNO market and I initially tested the service in mid-2024. While there were elements of MobileX that impressed me, like its Verizon coverage and customer service, issues with its network reliability prevented me from recommending the carrier to most customers.

Now that it's been over year, I've recently retested MobileX and found it has improved across the board. The carrier's AI Forecaster still works well to help customers build a custom phone plan, and its Unlimited 10 plan is a great option for customers who don't use much data. Overall, the pricing for MobileX’s unlimited plans is fairly typical compared to similar MVNOs, but customers with personalized limited plans can get a great cheap phone plan deal.

I also had a better experience with MobileX's network reliability and experienced solid data speeds throughout my testing. As a Verizon MVNO, MobileX has access to the nation’s largest 4G LTE network and some of the fastest 5G speeds available, though you may have to pay for the MobileX Gold Network to access them.

Let’s dive into MobileX and see if it's the right choice as your next carrier.

How I tested MobileX

I tested MobileX’s Unlimited 10 plan, data forecasting tool, and network strengths. I followed every step a customer might take when joining MobileX, from installing the SIM card to managing my plan with the MobileX app.

The features I tested include the following:

  • Installing and activating the MobileX SIM card on my Google Pixel 6
  • Sending texts and photo messages
  • Measuring data speeds in rural and urban areas
  • Purchasing an allotment of Priority Access data on the MobileX Gold Network
  • Making phone calls in rural and urban areas
  • Streaming video (Netflix and YouTube) on my phone
  • Playing online mobile games, including PUBG: Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile
  • Interacting with MobileX’s customer service via online chat and phone
  • Managing my plan with the MobileX app

The bottom line

Overall, MobileX’s service offers solid data speeds and excellent coverage. Its plans are fairly priced with some cheaper than other Verizon MVNOs. It also offers solid customer service that has always worked to solve any issues I faced. I think it's a solid choice for customers needing a low-data phone plan on Verizon's network.

Just remember, as a budget carrier, MobileX isn't for everyone. You should note that some of its best features—like the MobileX Gold Network with the fastest 5G speeds from Verizon—are paid add-ons. Customers who need larger data allotments or the fastest speeds should probably shop elsewhere.

MobileX plans and pricing

MobileX offers customizable limited data plan (including the originally called Personalized Access plan, which has been renamed to Need A Hand Plan), and two unlimited options.

MobileX’s most customizable limited plan is called Build Your Own Plan. As the name suggests, it allows you to create a custom limited phone plan to meet your individual needs. You can also choose the Need A Hand Plan, which is a 10-day free trial that uses AI to forecast your monthly data use. I tested the data forecasting tool and found it to be helpful, just make sure to compare the proposed allotment with your monthly usage.

The base Build Your Own Plan starts at $1.98/month and does not automatically include data. Adding more texts, minutes, and data costs:

  • $2.50 for 150 minutes and 150 texts
  • $4.50 for unlimited talk and text
  • $1.90 per 1GB data

The plan also offers optional extras like international coverage and data top-ups. Any leftover data you purchased rolls over as a credit on the next month’s bill.

Does MobileX have family plans?

MobileX does not currently offer family plans, so there are no family perks or multi-line discounts. This carrier works best for single-line phone plans. That said, families can still switch to MobileX, though each line will simply need its own individual account. If you’re interested in family savings, we recommend looking elsewhere.

Fact-checking MobileX's claims

Here at WhistleOut, we review all carriers using the same five metrics: price, value, speed, coverage, and customer service. Each metric is assigned a one-point star value to calculate the carrier's overall score.

MobileX's ratings were:

  •  Price: 4 out of 5
  •  Value: 4 out of 5
  •  Data speeds: 3 out of 5
  •  Coverage and network reliability: 3 out of 5
  •  Customer service: 3 out of 5

The hands-on testing of MobileX allowed me to experience its services as a regular customer would, ensuring my findings and recommendations are grounded in actual usage and not just in what the carrier claims to provide.

Price

One of MobileX’s best features is its pricing. It's tough to find a cheaper option for a barebones limited plan, and its unlimited plans come in a bit cheaper than many competitor Verizon MVNOs.

MobileX's Unlimited 10 plan at just $14.88/month is a great price, though you should note that it only includes 10GB of premium data. Since the average customer uses 10–15GB of data per month, this plan is on the lower end of most people's needs. While it's a great option for low-data users, many customers will be looking at MobileX's other unlimited plan.

The Unlimited 30 plan can be closely compared to the Visible plan from Visible Wireless. While both offer unlimited data, MobileX's plan includes 30GB of premium data. They also offer similar pricing, with MobileX’s Unlimited 30 plan at $24.88/month and the Visible plan at $25/month. While there are a few more differences—you can see those in the competition section below—MobileX's slightly lower price and premium data crown it as the winner. And that's impressive, especially because we consider the Visible plan to be one of the best values on the market.

The prices on MobileX’s limited data plans are similarly solid, putting them in competition with  other Verizon MVNOs, like US Mobile and Twigby Mobile.

Score: 4 out of 5

Value

MobileX is a great value for what it offers. Remember, this is not a carrier for customers who need massive phone plans with tons of data and perks. MobileX shines for customers wanting to save money with smaller unlimited plans and limited data options.

Score: 4 out of 5

Data speeds

MobileX offers solid 4G LTE and 5G data speeds. During both of my periods testing MobileX, I've experienced fast speeds. However, during my most recent test, I found the data was often deprioritized unless I paid extra for the MobileX Gold Network.

Deprioritized MobileX speed of 27Mbps vs. Gold Network speed of 357Mbps.
Deprioritized speed of 27Mbps vs. Gold Network speed of 357Mbps.
Image: Max McCaskill

The MobileX Gold Network is a new paid-add that offers an allotment of premium data at QCI 8.

The Gold Network's priority access pricing looks like this:

  • Gold On Demand - $2.10/GB
  • Making an unlimited plan Gold - $5/month

QCI stands for Quality of Service Class Identifier, and it's basically what wireless networks use to determine which phones get faster service during network congestion. For Verizon, QCI 8 is the network that many of its postpaid plans get their service on, meaning this is a great feature for MobileX.

You can see the impact that the Gold Network has in my screenshot above. On the left you can see the deprioritization in progress as my data quickly slows to around 27Mbps after the speed test begins. I immediately purchased as allotment of Gold Network data and retested to get the 357Mbps download speed on the right.

Even with deprioritized data, MobileX's speeds are still fine for most mobile tasks, including browsing social media or streaming videos. Having the option for faster speeds is an extra perk. That said, the fact that you have to pay for access to Verizon's fastest speeds on the Gold Network does still impact this category, especially when my testing a year ago resulted in 300Mbps+ speeds without needing a paid add-on. Overall, it's a net benefit MobileX can now guarantee faster speeds, but customers should note it comes at a cost of affordability.

Coverage and network reliability

MobileX and Verizon coverage map.
MobileX and Verizon coverage map.

MobileX offers access to the Verizon 4G LTE and 5G networks. That means you’ll have access to the nation's largest 4G LTE network, including some of the best rural coverage of any major network. I rarely lost a phone signal while testing MobileX in rural areas of North Carolina. Texting and calling also worked great.

While the Verizon network’s 4G LTE is excellent, its 5G is the smallest in the country, with most of its 5G towers in urban and suburban areas. In our previous testing on the Verizon network, we’ve found its speeds to be great in more populated areas, but it was often frustrating in more remote areas. That was evident in my testing; sometimes, I didn’t have a 5G signal at all, let alone a solid connection. Still, if you live in an urban area with Verizon 5G coverage, you can count on great 5G speeds.

During my initial testing in 2024, I ran into reliability issues and bouts of having no service. After speaking to customer service, it appears they were caused by a network upgrade the carrier was doing at the time. I'm happy to report that I experienced zero bouts of losing service during my recent testing, so it appears that MobileX has resolved any issues relating to network reliability.

Customer service

MobileX offers customer service through phone service and an online chat. I successfully connected with the online chat and got help quickly.

The online chat was extremely helpful. The customer service rep was knowledgeable and answered my questions, though I did have to wait about 15 minutes for the agent to join the conversation.

MobileX has also made some changes to its customer service that I think are great. Previously, customers needed to provide their ICCID to verify their identity for the online chat. I pointed out at the time that this was confusing for people who struggle with technology. Now, MobileX has updated their process to only need your name, email, and phone number. I'm sure that any major changes you want to make to your account would still require additional verification, but it was nice to speak with someone without needing to root through my settings.

Just remember that MobileX is still an online-only carrier, so you won't find expansive customer service options like in-person help at a physical store. If you find yourself frequently needing help with your device or plan, this may not be the carrier for you.

Score:  3 out of 5

Signing up with MobileX

Signing up with MobileX is easy. You can order a SIM kit online for $9.88 or pick one up at Walmart. MobileX’s service is available with both a physical SIM card and eSIM.

After you receive your SIM card or select an eSIM, you’ll choose a plan and activate your service from the MobileX app. If you’re bringing your own number, you’ll need to make sure you’ve unlocked your phone and paid off your bill with your previous carrier. Check out our switching to an MVNO guide for more details and requirements.

What phones work with MobileX?

Virtually all new smartphones work with MobileX’s network, including the iPhone 17, Samsung Galaxy S25, and Google Pixel 10.

Customers can bring their own devices or purchase a new phone directly from the MobileX store. The carrier offers several budget devices and earlier models of popular smartphones. However, you likely won’t find many phone deals or installment plans directly from MobileX.

Managing my MobileX plan

Your service is entirely managed in the MobileX app. This is where you’ll purchase new plans, launch the data forecasting tool, and select additional add-ons.

MobileX app

MobileX’s app is excellent. It’s easy to use and shows how much data you have remaining in your plan when you open the app. You can also see your usage trends, read customer service FAQs, and adjust your plan.

Canceling my plan

To cancel your plan, you can select the Deactivate Service option in the app. MobileX gives you several options, including completely ending your service or simply turning off your plan but paying to keep your number.

Did I like MobileX’s Data Forecaster and Unlimited 10 Plan?

I was generally pleased with the MobileX's Data Forecaster feature and Unlimited 10 plan. I had excellent coverage and fast data speeds, especially after purchasing an allotment of Priority Access data from the Gold Network. I also found the 10-day trial period to be an excellent starting point for creating a custom limited data plan.

Data Forecaster and 10-day trial period

MobileX data forecaster tool.

When choosing a MobileX plan, you can select a 10-day trial called the Need a Hand plan. The trail costs $4.88, but will be applied as a credit to whatever plan you eventually choose. You'll only lose the initial fee if you decide not to purchase a plan with MobileX after your trial.

Once the trial starts, simply use the plan as you normally would. At the end of the trial period, MobileX uses an AI-enhanced forecasting system to determine how much data you’d likely use in a month. You then have the option to purchase the plan if you want. MobileX will offer a limited data plan or recommend one of its unlimited plans.

After my trial, MobileX recommended a 5GB limited plan. Truthfully, this would probably not be enough data for me as I used around 8GB the previous month on a different plan. My phone use is somewhat inconsistent. I work remotely, so there are days my phone uses Wi-Fi all day instead of mobile data. If I leave home, I tend to use a bit more data from scrolling social media and streaming. You can see my usage spiking towards the end of my trial in the screenshot above.

If you have a consistent schedule, MobileX might recommend the perfect plan right from the beginning. On the other hand, if you have a bit of variability in your life, you should use it as a starting point. Check out our mobile data usage guide to help determine how much data you use in a month. Take that amount and compare it to your MobileX forecast. Using this information together should help you create a plan that works for you. The good news is even if you accidentally buy too much or too little data, MobileX makes it easy to top off your plan or adjust it for the next month.

Unlimited 10 plan

I also gave the Unlimited 10 plan a spin to see what MobileX's unlimited plans are like. I experienced the same great coverage and data speeds as I did during my initial test period.

I will add that as someone who uses less than 10GB of data per month, I'm in the minority of users, and most customers will likely want to join the Unlimited 30 plan instead. That said, if you use between 5–10GB of data per month, it's a solid option. Customers who use 5GB or less should opt for one of MobileX's limited plans.

Data allotment

Your data allotment, minutes, texting, and extra add-ons are completely customizable with MobileX. Even with the Unlimited plans' predetermined data allotments of 10GB and 30GB, you can still purchase more data if you exceed those high-speed limits.

I’m not going to point to a specific allotment as being the best. However, as I said above, the limited plans becomes less economical at around 5GB of data depending on your texting and minutes selections. If you need 6–10GB of data, it’s probably going to be cheaper to purchase the Unlimited 10 plan for $14.88/month. If you need over 10GB of data, opt for the Unlimited 30 plan for $24.88/month.

Mobile hotspot

Mobile hotspot is available as a paid add-on with the limited plans. The unlimited plans come with 10GB allotments. If you need regular mobile hotspot connectivity, I recommend simply going with an unlimited plan from the start.

Gaming and streaming

Gaming and streaming worked great with MobileX. I played PUBG: Mobile in an area with strong service and saw virtually no lag in the game.

I also streamed Netflix and YouTube. The best experience was in 5G coverage areas, but I didn’t have any major issues using 4G LTE. Videos and games just seemed to take a bit longer to load. Once it started, everything worked fine.

MobileX vs. the competition

MobileX holds its own in matchups with other top Verizon MVNOs. MobileX has an edge with small limited data plans, but its top unlimited plan is similar to that of its closest competitors. If price is your chief concern, MobileX barely pulls ahead. However, if mobile hotspot or network speeds are important to you, it might be best to go with another carrier.

The MobileX Unlimited 30 plan and US Mobile Unlimited Starter plan are closely priced and offer the same mobile hotspot allotment. The biggest difference between the two is their high-speed data allotments. MobileX offers 30GB of premium data, while US Mobile offers a whopping 70GB of premium data on Verizon's network. Neither are subject to severe bouts of slowness.

US Mobile also offers access to all three major networks. While the number of times you can switch for free is limited, some customers value the ability to switch networks during periods of poor service. In my review of US Mobile, I found the network switching feature to be extremely useful, but not always easy to initiate. You can learn more about my experience in my US Mobile review.

Overall, MobileX ekes out a win on price, but US Mobile wins the battle over network coverage.

Verizon-owned Visible is another competitor with an extremely similar plan. Like US Mobile’s offering, MobileX is a few cents cheaper than the $25/month Visible plan. Both plans offer similar data access, with MobileX including 30GB of premium data. Where Visible takes the lead is its hotspot offering. The Visible plan includes an unlimited hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps. Check out our Visible review for the full rundown of the carrier.

Since the pricing is so similar, how you use your hotspot should be the deciding factor between these two carriers. If you use hotspot for internet-intensive tasks like gaming or HD streaming, MobileX might be a better choice. On the other hand, if you use your hotspot to surf the web or scroll through social media, Visible will probably be the better choice.

Visible
Visible

As a final note on both comparisons, I'll also point out that MobileX's Gold Network with QCI 8 access is not available with Visible's base plan or with the US Mobile Unlimited Starter plan. If you need the fastest data speeds, MobileX can provide them, just note that it'll instantly become the most expensive option.

Recap: Would I recommend MobileX?

I recommend MobileX for customers looking for a small, limited data plan or a cheap unlimited plan on Verizon’s network. For a basic talk and text plan or data plan with just a few gigabytes of data, MobileX’s pricing is tough to beat. Plus, the carrier’s data forecaster and trial plan make it simple to know if you can survive on a limited data plan or need something larger.

As for the unlimited options, MobileX’s top unlimited plan is extremely competitive with popular unlimited plans from US Mobile and Visible. It’ll likely be the features of each plan—not the pricing—that ultimately determine which carrier you’ll use. Remember that Visible has an unlimited mobile hotspot and US Mobile offers a much larger data allotment.

I've been throughly impressed with the improvements MobileX has made since my testing last year. It's sorted out its connectivity issues, added new features, and even made its customer service process more friendly to people who aren't tech-savvy. That said, I was slightly disappointed that my speeds seemed slower this time unless I paid for the MobileX Gold Network. While its deprioritized speeds were fine and still usable, it felt a little unfair to have to pay more for speeds that I experienced for free last year.

Overall, if you’re looking for cheap service on Verizon’s network, MobileX should be on your radar.
