Straight Talk is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) prepaid carrier, which indeed means that it’s a smaller carrier. Long story short, smaller carriers, like Mint Mobile, Boost Mobile, Tracfone Wireless, Cricket Wireless, and others piggyback on other major networks to provide coverage. Straight Talk can use any network, whereas other MVNOs use specific networks like Mint Mobile and T-Mobile’s network.
The good news with smaller carriers is that you almost always pay less for your data plan. The bad news is that your data speeds can slow down to prioritize other users. For example, you (a Straight Talk user) could be at a crowded grocery store and annoyingly can’t get a text out to your partner to ask about what brand of coffee to get.
