Expert tip: T-Mobile has cheaper international data

T-Mobile is much cheaper for international use than Verizon or AT&T. Other carriers usually charge $12/day for data abroad, while T-Mobile's 1-Day International Passes start at just $5. Plus, you get free high-speed international data with its nicer unlimited plans.

Where does T-Mobile’s international data work?

The 11 countries included in all T-Mobile international plans are Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, and Greece. To see the full list of additional countries where T-Mobile international roaming is available, visit T-Mobile and search for the destination you plan to visit.

What is international data roaming?

When you travel abroad and venture away from your home network’s coverage, international data roaming kicks in to keep your phone connected. This feature allows you to access cellular data even when you’re outside your provider’s reach.

If you use mobile data while overseas, your phone will search for an available network that your home provider has partnered with in the country you're visiting. You’ll usually see the name of the foreign carrier you're connected to at the top of your phone, like "Vodafone UK" or "Orange Spain" instead of your regular provider.

Since you’ll technically be on a foreign carrier’s network, speeds and coverage may vary from what you’re used to in the States. You might get blazing 5G speeds in Tokyo, for example, but only spotty 3G coverage in the Scottish Highlands, based on the local coverage.

Depending on your destination and how you use your data, your mobile carrier may charge extra fees, making it crucial to monitor your usage and adjust your device’s roaming settings to avoid surprise expenses.

Apps you can’t travel without

T-Mobile international calling

T-Mobile provides straightforward options for calling overseas, whether you're traveling abroad or calling from the United States. Many plans include some international calling, and you can add features like Stateside International Talk for unlimited calls to over 70 countries for $15/month.

International calling rates: Mobile and landline

Check out our table of the international rates you can expect with T-Mobile. Compare the standard per-minute calling cost without any add-ons, which is now a flat $3.00/minute to most countries. See if international texts to your destination are included.

You can also check which countries include landline calls with the Stateside International add-on, and the final column lists the reduced per-minute rate when you have that $15/month add-on active.

What is Stateside International Talk and Text?

T-Mobile's Stateside International Talk and Text add-on costs $15/month and provides unlimited calls to landlines in over 70 countries and to mobile devices in over 30 countries. It also includes unlimited international texting and heavily discounted rates to more than 200 other destinations.

While many T-Mobile plans include some international features, this add-on extends your coverage significantly. Depending on the country, you'll either get unlimited calling or pay just $0.05 to $0.20 per minute. For example, calls to Belgium are unlimited, while calls to Australia cost just $0.07 per minute.

T-Mobile's international travel pass

If the international roaming features included in your T-Mobile plan aren't going to be sufficient for your trip, you can add more roaming high-speed data and unlimited calling with any one of T-Mobile's international passes. These include the following:

Price Data*
1-Day International Pass $5.00 512MB
10-Day International Pass $35.00 5GB
30-Day International Pass $50.00 15GB

*Data allotment is for the length of the pass, not per day.

All of T-Mobile’s international travel passes allow data sharing so you can create a mobile hotspot for your other devices. That may determine which pass you choose depending on your online habits and data needs.

How does the T-Mobile International Pass work?

The T-Mobile International Pass works as an additional data allowance tacked on to your standard T-Mobile plan’s international data allotment. When abroad, your phone will recognize that you're roaming on a T-Mobile-partnered international network and will draw any data you use from your international pass data allotment—just like it pulls from your mobile hotspot allotment when you tether a device to your phone's cellular data.

Once you run out of data, your phone will ping you, and you'll have the option to purchase more if you need it.

How to activate a T-Mobile international pass

Adding an International Pass to your plan is as easy as selecting it in the T-Life app. Simply open the app and take these steps:

  1. Select Manage.
  2. Tap See Plans.
  3. Select Manage Add-Ons.
  4. Choose the pass you want.

  5. Follow the prompts to select a starting date for your pass and agree to the terms to complete your purchase.

You can also add an International Pass from your T-Mobile account online or by visiting a store. To ensure that you don't go over your data limit, you can keep track of your international roaming usage through T-Life.

Once you have used up all the data included in your pass or plan, you'll need to purchase another one if you want to continue using international data at high speeds.

T-Mobile international coverage maps

T-Mobile has cellular coverage around the world thanks to its broad web of international partner networks. This makes T-Mobile a strong choice for travelers who need reliable, fast connectivity wherever they go.

Check out coverage in:

T-Mobile coverage in Europe

T-Mobile provides excellent cell phone coverage across Europe, delivering robust 4G LTE service in many popular destinations. Popular destinations like France, Spain, and the southern portion of the U.K. (England, Wales, and Ireland) have practically complete coverage from coast to coast. Most of Italy has T-Mobile access, with small pockets near Perugia in the north having less coverage. T-Mobile's coverage is spottier in Eastern Europe and along the Adriatic, including areas in Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

T-Mobile coverage in Asia

T-Mobile doesn’t offer as much coverage throughout Asia when compared to Europe. In countries like China, service is sparse, and in regions such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, speeds are often limited to slower 2G and 3G networks. However, as you move further east, coverage improves significantly. You can get up to 4G LTE speeds in destinations like Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Osaka in Japan, and Seoul in South Korea.

T-Mobile coverage in South America

T-Mobile offers decent coverage In South America. You’ll find reliable 4G LTE service along the eastern coast, including Argentina, Uruguay, and parts of Brazil, as well as in the northwestern region, with strong coverage in Peru and Colombia. However, outside these areas, T-Mobile service—even at slower 3G or 2G speeds—is scarce, making connectivity a challenge in much of the continent.

If you have an upcoming trip, check out T-Mobile’s coverage checker by entering your destination to see what options are offered to stay connected while away.

Is T-Mobile's International Pass worth it?

Whether a T-Mobile International Pass is worth it depends on your travel style and existing plan benefits. If your T-Mobile plan already includes international data, and you use Wi-Fi often, chances are you don’t need an extra pass. For heavier data users who rely on maps and streaming, a travel pass provides more high-speed data and flexibility, available in 1-day, 10-day, or 30-day options.

For trips over two weeks, the 30-Day International Pass at $50 is the best value, delivering 15GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited slower data. It’s cheaper than Verizon and AT&T, which charge $12/day each. That said, an even lower cost alternative is Mint Mobile's $5 Minternational Pass, which includes 100 minutes and 100 texts over 30 days but offers no data.
