What’s Visible Wireless hotspot?

Visible mobile hotspot allows you to use your Visible-connected cell phone as a Wi-Fi router to connect other devices, such as your laptop, to the internet using your mobile data. This works with most modern smartphones like the iPhone 15 or the Samsung Galaxy S24. Simply enable hotspot in your cell phone’s settings and connect your device like you would with any other Wi-Fi network.

Visible hotspot limits and speeds

Visible includes unlimited mobile hotspot with its cell phone plans. However, there’s a bit more to the story here:

Visible limits mobile hotspot data speeds to 5Mbps, 10Mbps, or 15 Mbps depending on your plan—most carriers don’t have speed limits for hotspot usage.
Visible only allows you to connect one device at a time—the single connection makes sense, though, considering that the speeds don’t really support multiple devices.

Is 5Mbps fast enough for a mobile hotspot?

Download speeds of 5Mbps are theoretically sufficient for most internet-related tasks. Consider that Netflix recommends a minimum of 3Mbps for streaming in SD and 5Mbps for streaming in HD. Just keep in mind that 5Mbps likely doesn’t support much multi-tasking.

To understand just how much Visible limits hotspot speeds, note that average 4G LTE speeds are around 30Mbps.

My experience testing Visible mobile hotspot

I’ve tested the hotspot capabilities with the basic Visible plan.

The first thing I did was test its speed to see if it actually lives up to the 5Mbps promise. I ran the Visible hotspot through several internet speed tests throughout the day and found that it hit right around the 5Mbps mark every time.

Next, I checked to see if I could get through part of my internet-heavy workday using just the Visible mobile hotspot. Overall, the Visible wireless hotspot noticeably slowed things down, but that was expected as I’m typically on a gigabit fiber connection. Web pages took some time to completely load, but it wasn’t slow enough to really hinder my work.

I also hopped on YouTube to take advantage of the opportunity to get paid for watching funny pet videos for “testing” purposes. Honestly, the whole process ran smoothly. I never encountered any issues while using my Visible hotspot.

Visible hotspot vs. Verizon hotspot

With access to a Verizon phone and plan, I also compared the Visible hotspot with its parent company’s hotspot. Of course, the first noticeable difference is that Verizon’s hotspot does not have a speed limit. If you have the Verizon Unlimited Plus plan, you’ll have full speeds until you reach your 30GB hotspot data limit. If you’re connected to Verizon’s 5G network, you can see exceptionally fast speeds. I saw speed results consistently hitting around 90Mbps.

Things felt significantly faster on the Verizon hotspot. Pages loaded in the blink of an eye, making the Visible hotspot feel much slower. However, if you’re not comparing side-by-side, the difference likely wouldn’t feel so drastic.

There’s no doubt that Verizon crushes Visible where hotspot speeds are concerned. Visible, however, has its parent company beat as far as limits go. Verizon will slow your speeds down to 3G speeds after you reach your limit. Speaking from firsthand experience, those speeds are practically unusable for everyday internet tasks.

Is Visible mobile hotspot good?

Visible's hotspot is good If you’re concerned with how much hotspot data you can use. If you want a fast hotspot, Visible probably doesn’t work for you.

Remember Visible prioritizes hotspot data limits over data speeds. Most carriers either limit the amount of full-speed data you can use or count any mobile data against your overall data limit on your cell phone plan. Unlike Visible, they don’t put a limit on data speeds, meaning until you reach either your hotspot limit or overall data limit (depending on your plan) you’ll see full internet speeds. On the other hand, Visible limits speeds but not hotspot data usage.
