- T-Mobile has updated its Go5G Next plan to include discounted 5G access for extra devices starting October 17.
- Pricing starts at $5 per device and is available for smartwatches, tablets, and laptops.
- Smartwatches get unlimited data at 512Kbps speeds.
- Tablets and laptops get 30GB of high-speed data per month.
- This offer is only available on T-Mobile's most expensive plan—Go5G Next—which starts at $100/month for one line.
- T-Mobile is also offering $200 financing to cover the price difference between Wi-Fi and cellular versions of smartwatches and tablets.
T-Mobile is changing its Go5G Next plan by adding a 5G connectivity perk for extra devices at $5 each. This includes smartwatches, tablets, and laptops. Customers can also save up to $200 on these devices with new financing offers. These plan changes are set to go live on October 17.
This means that T-Mobile now offers one of the cheapest ways to get data plans for extra devices when compared to options from AT&T and Verizon. That said, this offer is limited to T-Mobile's most expensive plan. While it's a great deal for customers already on Go5G Next, some customers may find it's cheaper to stick with a lower-priced T-Mobile plan and spend a bit more on a separate 5G device plan.
How is T-Mobile Go5G Next changing?
Go5G Next is T-Mobile's top-tier premium plan. The addition of $5 cellular connectivity for extra devices and financing are just more perks for a plan that's already full of them. Starting at $100/month, Go5G Next currently includes:
- Unlimited premium data
- 50GB mobile hotspot
- Unlimited talk and text
- Apple TV, Netflix, and Hulu subscriptions
- AAA membership
- International perks
- Device upgrades every year
What it did not include until now were perks for extra devices. Customers wanting 5G connectivity for smartwatches or tablets needed to purchase a separate plan entirely. Smartwatch plans start at $12/month and tablet plans start at $20/month from T-Mobile.
The new $5 device connectivity perks include:
- Unlimited cellular data for smartwatches at 512Kbps speeds.
- 30GB of high-speed cellular data for tablets and laptops, then connectivity at slower speeds.
Once these new perks begin on October 17, all current and new Go5G Next customers can get them. Customers on other T-Mobile plans must still purchase a separate plan and pay full price for cellular-enabled devices.
Price breakdown: Extra devices, hidden fees, and family plans
On the surface, this all sounds like a great deal. However, you do need to read the fine print and make sure you understand these offers. Remember that Go5G Next starts at $100/month, so additional costs add up fast.
If you purchase a new smartwatch or tablet through T-Mobile, there is a $35 device connection fee due at the sale.
As for T-Mobile's $200 device financing, it operates like a phone installment plan. You'll receive bill credits locking you into the Go5G Next plan for two years. If you want to leave the plan early, you must finish paying off the device. Also, note that the financing only covers the cost difference between the Wi-Fi and cellular-enabled versions of devices. Unless you qualify for another deal, you must still pay the full price equivalent for the Wi-Fi edition of a smartwatch or tablet. Additionally, while the financing is also available for laptops, T-Mobile limits its eligibility to pre-approved options.
Finally, remember that T-Mobile does not allow families to mix and match unlimited plans. If you're in a family plan and want to take advantage of this perk, all of your lines must switch to the Go5G Next plan. For a family of four that's $225/month ($56.25/line) before adding on extra devices.
Recap: Should I switch to the new Go5G Next plan?
If you're already on the Go5G Next plan, this update is giving you a lot of value if you have extra devices. On the other hand, customers on cheaper plans shouldn't switch to Go5G Next just to get cheap 5G connectivity for their smartwatches and tablets.
Remember that Go5G Next is already the most expensive phone plan on the market. While it does include a ton of features, it's not the right choice for everyone. If you don't need the massive data allotments and perks, you might be better off on a cheaper phone plan and paying more for one of T-Mobile's 5G accessory plans. For example, if you have a single line on the T-Mobile Essentials plan, paying an extra $12/month out of pocket for a smartwatch plan will bring your bill to $72/month. Switching to Go5G Next and adding the smartwatch perk would be $105/month.
As for customers on the most expensive plans from AT&T and Verizon, Go5G Next is tempting if you have extra devices. With Verizon's Unlimited Ultimate plan, connectivity for smartwatches starts at $7.50/month and tablets start at $10/month. AT&T's Unlimited Premium is even more expensive at $10.99/month for smartwatches and $20.99/month for tablets. Customers on these plans should compare the overall cost of Go5G Next to see if switching will help them save.
