Whether you're moving to Alaska or are a lifelong resident, it's important to understand that the state has very limited wireless coverage. Alaska is the largest state in the country, containing over 660,000 square miles of territory, but much of it is wilderness with no phone coverage at all. Instead, carriers have strategically placed their networks in urban areas, mainly around the coasts and the southern part of the state.
Only AT&T and Verizon have wireless networks in Alaska. Additionally, only AT&T offers 5G coverage. T-Mobile doesn't have an Alaskan network, though its customers do still have limited service through roaming agreements with other carriers.
You can use WhistleOut's coverage check feature to instantly see what coverage is like at your home in Alaska or across the country. The bottom line: AT&T has the best coverage in Alaska
The best wireless coverage in Alaska is from AT&T because it offers the largest 4G LTE network and the only 5G coverage in the state. The best plan on AT&T’s network is the US Mobile Unlimited Premium plan because it offers unlimited premium data and a 200GB mobile hotspot for just $44/month.
No carrier has an extremely strong cellular network in Alaska, but you'll generally still have service in larger towns or tourist areas. Cities like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Nome, and Juneau all have some form of coverage from AT&T or Verizon. Outside of the immediate area around those cities, such as in the rugged interior of the state, along the Aleutian Islands, or on the northern Arctic Coast, you won't find any wireless service.
Why it's important to pick the right coverage
Picking the right coverage in Alaska helps make sure you stay connected with your family and friends. Whether you're spending time in Anchorage or touring Juneau during a cruise, having a strong phone signal is crucial to accessing your navigation apps or getting help during emergencies. Additionally, opting for a carrier with strong coverage in the areas where you work and live helps you avoid frustrating dead zones and dropped calls, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted mobile experience when you don't have access to Wi-Fi.

AT&T easily takes the win for best Alaska phone coverage by offering the largest 4G LTE coverage area at 6.83% of the state. Verizon's 4G LTE follows closely behind, providing coverage to 4.67% of the state. Don't be fooled by the small coverage percentages since only about 1% of the state is privately owned—or in other words, populated. Despite the grids only covering a sliver of the state, AT&T and Verizon have placed their towers in strategic areas around cities to cover a large number of people.

We rank 4G LTE as the most important coverage overall because of its wider availability. However, as 5G networks grow and become an integral part of the mobile experience because they offer faster speeds, they also become more important for coverage. In Alaska, only AT&T offers 5G coverage (covering 1.96% of the state), automatically making it the best network. That said, don't be surprised if Verizon or T-Mobile expands their 5G grid into the urban centers of the state in the coming years.

AT&T's best phone plan is the Premium 2.0 plan for $90. This premium offering includes unlimited premium data and a 100GB mobile hotspot, giving you the power to stay connected on the go. While testing Verizon's service, we clocked its 5G UW speeds at over 800Mbps (the fastest mobile data speeds we've ever seen). Unfortunately, since Verizon doesn't offer 5G coverage in Alaska, you'll only experience these types of speeds outside of the state. Within the boundaries of Alaska, you can expect top speeds around 100Mbps on on Verizon's 4G LTE network.
Best phone plans on Verizon's network
You don't have to buy a plan directly from Verizon to get its coverage. You can switch to a Verizon MVNO instead to get the same service. These MVNOs rent service from major carriers, meaning their plans are much cheaper for customers.
Our favorite Verizon MVNO is Visible, which Verizon actually owns. The base Visible plan starts at just $25/month, and includes unlimited 5G data and an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps. During our testing of Visible's service, we saw fast and consistent speeds in urban and rural areas.
US Mobile's Unlimited Premium is one of our favorite plans with access to Verizon's network. For just $44/month, you'll get unlimited talk, text, and unlimited high-speed data, as well as 50GB of dedicated hotspot data. Plus, if you purchase Unlimited Premium on a family plan with three or more lines, you can also get a free streaming perk. US Mobile also offers coverage on all three major networks, meaning you can switch to AT&T or T-Mobile if you decide Verizon isn't for you. This is an excellent perk if you're someone who frequently travels throughout Alaska, as you can always switch to the best network in your area.

T-Mobile network coverage in Alaska
Alaskan residents should not purchase a T-Mobile plan because the carrier does not have a wireless network in the state. If you're just visiting Alaska, there is no need to switch carriers. You'll still have limited coverage because T-Mobile has roaming agreements with other carriers. Just know your device will be under constant threat of deprioritization (throttled speeds), so your data speeds may slow down in busy areas.
T-Mobile does have T-Satellite available as a perk with some plans. This is wireless coverage provided by the Starlink satellite array. Unfortunately, T-Mobile has indicated its T-Satellite service is limited to select parts of southern Alaska. You should not attempt to rely on T-Mobile's satellite service in most rural areas of the state.
As you can see in the interactive T-Mobile coverage map below, there is no coverage in Alaska. That said, we've tested T-Mobile outside of the state and found it's the best 5G network in the rest of the nation. If you're not a permanent Alaska resident, T-Mobile is a great choice for service.

Network speeds are one of the most important factors in determining your overall wireless experience. In general, the faster your speed, the better your experience. Fast 5G data speeds guarantee your device and apps will work well.

- Verizon does not offer 5G coverage in Alaska, so its top speeds are around 100Mbps on the 4G LTE network.
Still unsure which network you should choose? Try an eSIM free trial
If you live in an area with both AT&T and Verizon coverage, you should consider testing both networks through an eSIM free trial. Both US Mobile and Visible offer free temporary trials of their networks. While you can't treat these offers as a replacement phone plan, they should give you enough time to decide which network you can most rely on in your area of Alaska.
