There are plenty of reasons to live in or travel to North Carolina. The Tar Heel State has a rich college basketball history, boasts some of the best barbecue, and features everything from the beach to the mountains. Granted, I may be a bit biased as an NC native.
North Carolina is a big state clocking in at 53,819 square miles. That's a lot of space for carriers to reach. Luckily, we've compared coverage maps to determine which wireless provider offers the best coverage. Additionally, I've extensively tested out each carrier in my time as a lifelong North Carolina resident.
Luckily, WhistleOut's coverage check feature lets you instantly see what signal strength is like at your location. Just punch in your address and we do the rest. In addition to showing you a map of your area with the coverage from the major carriers, we filter through the available cell phone plans and present only those from carriers who provide good reception to you.
Let's dive in and see who has the best coverage in North Carolina for 4G LTE and 5G.
About phone coverage in North Carolina
North Carolina may be most famous for its barbecue, rich tradition of college basketball, marvelous mountains, and beautiful beaches. However, NC is also home to Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane (hence the state's "First in flight" motto). And Salisbury, North Carolina, is where Cheerwine—possibly the greatest soft drink ever made—hails from.
Thankfully, all three major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile) offer strong coverage throughout NC. Therefore, whether you're moving to or within The Old North State, you'll experience reliable reception.
Why it's important to pick the right coverage
While there are buzzing metropolitan areas like Charlotte, Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, and Durham, you'll find plenty of rural pockets. Therefore, you'll want to pick the right carrier to keep you connected with full bars wherever you roam.

Verizon network coverage in North Carolina
Verizon sports the best nationwide 4G LTE coverage, and it likewise offers the most 4G LTE in the Old North State. Big Red keeps you connected from its beaches to the mountains and everywhere in between.
Although Verizon's nationwide 5G lags behind both T-Mobile and AT&T, its showing in NC is pretty decent. Big Red's blazing-fast 5G network spans 39.22% of the state. If you're a Verizon subscriber in North Carolina, you can tap into its 5G Ultra Wideband (UWB) network, which provides some of the fastest mobile data speeds on the market.
Best Verizon phone plan
As the frontrunner in North Carolina, Verizon is a great choice for mobile service. The best Verizon plan overall is its Unlimited Plus plan. You'll enjoy a buffet of talk, text, and data with an unlimited premium high-speed data threshold. Unlimited Plus even throws in a 30GB mobile hotspot allowance. You can sign up for various optional discounted perks, like the Disney Bundle.
Best phone plans on Verizon's network
While Verizon offers superb 4G LTE coverage and blisteringly fast 5G, its plans don't come cheap. Luckily, mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) let you save. These smaller carriers don't use their own cellular towers but instead piggyback off of major a major network, so you'll enjoy the same reliable service at much lower costs.
The best Verizon MVNO is Visible. You can pick from a pair of unlimited data plans, including an attractively-priced $25/month option. You'll get unlimited talk, text, and data with an all-you-can-use mobile hotspot capped at 5Mbps.
US Mobile is another great mobile virtual network operator powered by Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T, depending on which you choose. There are plenty of plans ranging from low-data options to excellent unlimited tiers. Its highest unlimited option provides unlimited premium data with a 50GB mobile hotspot allotment.
On a budget, we recommend Twigby Mobile. Its wallet-friendly plans vary from talk-and-text-only to unlimited data. Notably, Twigby Mobile delivers some of the most affordable plans available with excellent customer service.

But these aren't the only options. Here are some of the most popular plans using Big Red's towers:
AT&T network coverage in North Carolina
AT&T has the nation's second-best 4G LTE network, just behind Verizon. Likewise, AT&T's coverage in North Carolina is slightly under Big Red. In my experience as an AT&T customer in NC, you get outstanding 4G LTE signal strength in cities, suburbs, and rural areas alike.
Despite its small 5G footprint, AT&T's mobile data speeds are extremely fast where available, and I regularly see over 100Mbps download speeds. If you want a reliable network and are okay with its smaller 5G footprint, mostly clustered in cities, AT&T is a solid choice for cell phone coverage in NC.
Best AT&T phone plan
Big Blue's reliability, especially in NC, makes it a compelling choice for wireless service. Our favorite AT&T cell phone plan is its Premium 2.0 option, which provides unlimited talk, text, and data with truly unlimited high-speed data. There's also a sizable 100GB mobile hotspot allowance.
You can also check out the best AT&T prepaid plans. Want to save on your monthly bill? Grab some relatives, friends, or both, and hop on an AT&T family plan for a competitive multi-line discount. Consider an AT&T bundle deal that saves you money if you need home internet.
Best phone plans on AT&T's network
While AT&T is an excellent choice for mobile service, you can get the same great service at a much lower price from an MVNO.
Our favorite AT&T MVNO is Cricket Wireless. You can pick from several plans at various prices, including an enticing unlimited plan with perks like HBO Max with ads and cloud storage. We like that Cricket stores are all over the country (there's even one along my usual running route).
Alternatively, Consumer Cellular is a good choice that offers a choice of AT&T or T-Mobile service. It gives you J.D. Power award-winning customer service, an attractive AARP discount, and several plans to pick from.

T-Mobile network coverage in North Carolina
Although T-Mobile is last for its 4G LTE coverage (both nationally and in North Carolina), its 4G footprint isn't bad. Rather, it just doesn't reach as far as Verizon and AT&T.
But The Un-carrier's sheer 5G dominance in the Old North State more than compensates for its middling 4G LTE signal strength. I've tested T-Mobile in North Carolina and have been blown away by its exceptional 5G mobile data speeds.
Likewise, T-Mobile's network showed the little 5G icon on my phone. Generally, T-Mobile delivers extremely fast mobile data in cities, suburbs, and many rural locations, although you might experience a few spotty coverage areas in more remote regions of NC.
Best T-Mobile phone plans
Our favorite T-Mobile plan is its Experience More plan. You'll get unlimited talk, text, and data with truly unlimited premium data. Moreover, The Un-Carrier gives you 60GB of mobile hotspot tethering data.
You can also check out the best T-Mobile prepaid plans. One of the best T-Mobile family plans lets you save on your monthly bill with a multi-line discount. We also recommend bundling T-Mobile phone and internet for great cost-cutting.
Best phone plans on T-Mobile's network
Consider a T-Mobile MVNO if you want best-in-class 5G coverage without paying a premium. Our favorite wireless provider piggybacking off of T-Mobile towers is Mint Mobile. You can cop an unlimited plan for as low as $30/month (but you'll need to pre-pay for three, six, or 12 months of service upfront).
Google Fi is another great mobile virtual network operator powered by the Un-Carrier. Google Fi Wireless features three plans, including an outstanding unlimited tier with neat perks like Google One cloud storage and excellent international calling benefits.
The waller-friendly Tello is a nice option as well. We like its customizable plans as low as $5/month for a no-data tier.

Methodology: How we determined the best cell
phone coverage in North Carolina
We evaluated the best cell phone coverage in North Carolina by looking at individual carrier coverage maps for both 4G LTE and 5G. Then, we ranked each wireless provider according to their state-wide coverage area. After that, we rounded up the best plans from each carrier and their respective MVNOs. We also looked at where each carrier performs the best. Additionally, I did hands-on testing with the major carriers—AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verison—to see how each wireless provider performed daily.
