Using your T-Mobile hotspot to connect to the internet is convenient, but if you are working from home, it might not be your best option. T-Mobile’s largest allotment of high-speed mobile hotspot data is technically unlimited premium hotspot with their Experience Beyond plan, or 60GB with the Experience More plan. Those who do not require a lot of data, however, can save big by eliminating home internet bills and using a T-Mobile hotspot to stay connected. Simply pick out a T-Mobile plan that includes mobile hotspot data, then tether your phone to your laptop, tablet, or another device.

As more people than ever are telecommuting, having fast and reliable home internet is becoming ever more crucial. But this often means signing up with an internet service provider and the many annoyances (installation, high costs) that come along with that. By using the mobile hotspot included in a T-Mobile cell phone plan, you could get rid of that internet bill and save some money.

How to replace your home internet with a T-Mobile hotspot
  1. Sign up or upgrade your T-Mobile plan to one that includes dedicated hotspot data.
  2. Enable mobile hotspot/tethering in your phone’s settings.
  3. Connect your devices
  4. Cancel your regular home internet plan!

Best T-Mobile Hotspot Plan

T-Mobile’s main cell phone plans all come with unlimited 3G mobile hotspot, like the base Essentials plan. However, unless your work only requires very basic web browsing and emailing, 3G speeds are probably not going to cut it for you. Alternatively, the Un-carrier offers its Experience plans which are great for folks switching from other carriers and regular phone upgraders.

T-Mobile Experience More and Experience Beyond are really the only plans to consider if you’re looking to replace your home internet with mobile hotspot. Experience More comes with 60GB of 4G LTE hotspot data, by far the largest allotment of high-speed hotspot data in any T-Mobile plan. Only surpassed by Experience Beyond which provides unlimited high-speed hotspot data.

Can T-Mobile Hotspot Support Working from Home?

If you are working from home, it’s important to make sure that T-Mobile’s mobile hotspot will be adequate for your needs.

Data Limits and Speed

Experience More or Experience beyond are probably T-Mobile’s only cell phone plans that come close to being able to handle the demands of working from home. You'll get 60GB of hotspot tethering data with Experience More and unlimited high-speed hotspot data with Experience Beyond. Is this enough to handle your telecommuting needs? That depends on how you’re using it, but if you’re on the computer all day—as most of us are—it may not quite cut it.

T-Mobile’s Network

If your work doesn’t demand much data usage, replacing home internet with T-Mobile hotspot could be a great way to save money by getting rid of that internet bill. T-Mobile’s 4G network ranks third behind Verizon and AT&T, and is known for consistently high speeds. That network is set to get even more powerful in the wake of the carrier’s acquisition of Sprint.

Is T-Mobile Hotspot Right for You?

Work aside, using T-Mobile hotspot as your primary home internet could be a good idea if you don’t use a lot of internet. Even 60GB of 5G hotspot could go really fast if you watch a lot of shows and movies on Netflix or other streaming services in 4k UHD (ultra-high-definition), but reducing video quality can help from using too much data too fast. If you have multiple people using internet in your house, mobile hotspot is not the best option for home internet. 5G bandwidth is usually enough to handle connecting one or two devices, but isn’t quite adequate for more.
