Verizon vs Optimum

Article Summary

In this comparison we take a look at two internet service providers; Verizon Fios and Optimum.

Optimum Online is the internet provider brand owned by the major telecommunications company Altice. Verizon Fios, on the other hand, is owned by the mega telecom company...Verizon.

We take a look at each internet provider through the lenses of speed, cost, coverage, and customer reviews to find out which of the internet companies takes the crown.

Verizon vs Optimum

Optimum vs Verizon: Internet Speeds

Winner: Optimum

This category is kind of tricky. With internet speeds topping out at 8Gbps, Optimum no doubt takes the win. However, Verizon's top speed of 2Gbps is still incredibly fast.

The fact of the matter is, the average household with average internet users, are probably not going to have any issues when it comes to speed with either Verizon Fios or Optimum. While you might not always be hitting those top speeds, both providers should be able to provide you with fast enough internet to handle your everyday needs.

Cost, Data and Value for Money

Winner: Tie

Monthly Cost

When comparing apples to apple – essentially plans with the same top speeds – prices tend to be fairly similar between Verizon and Optimum. Fairly similar, however, isn't exactly the same. Optimum tends to offer comparable products to Verizon Fios at slightly lower prices. When it comes to monthly costs, Optimum has the clear edge, albeit not much of an edge.

With all that in mind, Verizon does rate well in overall cost because its prices for its highest speeds are very competitive compared to similar offerings with other companies. However, since we can't compare this to anything Optimum has to offer, we'll give them the slight advantage.

Just a quick note here. When shopping for internet, you can pretty much bet that the advertised prices you see are going to be introductory rates. This means, eventually (typically after 12 to 24 months) you can expect to pay a higher monthly rate for your internet.

Installation and Other Fees

Both Verizon and Optimum charge installation fees, and they both charge about the same. Each internet provider, however, does often offer deals that include free installation. If you are looking for new internet service look for such deals.

Likewise, both companies does charge for equipment if you don't already have equipment that is compatible with their services. Again, you may find either company offering a deal that will get you equipment free for an extended amount of time.

Data Allowance

Verizon Fios does not have a data cap on their internet plans.

Optimum does not have a data cap on their internet plans.

Either way you go, worrying about data usage is not going to be a thing for you. Ready to binge ever available season of Game of Thrones on your Verizon Fios internet? Go right ahead. Need to catch up on the Great British Bake Off with your Optimum internet plan? Why not?

Deals

We've kind of already mentioned the bulk of deals you can expect from both Verizon and Optimum (introductory rates, free installation, free equipment). On top of those common deals, you might find that one company or the other is offering additional deals.

Free subscriptions to premium TV like Showtime or even to streaming services like Netflix have been offered by either internet provider in the past and may be offered in the future.

Availability: Verizon vs Optimum

Winner: Verizon

Optimum and Verizon Fios aren't the most available services in the country. In fact, compared to other big internet providers, both are rated quite low in this category.

Still, there must be a winner, and this time it is Verizon whose Fios is available in slightly more of the country than Optimum who really only has a pretty small area of coverage.

Customer Reviews: Optimum vs Verizon

Winner: Tie

The fact of the matter is, internet providers aren't exactly known for their great customer satisfaction rankings. The opposite is actually true with the industry as a whole suffering from overall subpar reviews.

Verizon and Optimum are no exceptions to the rule. Both don't score high in customer satisfaction. Common complaints you'll hear about both relate to poor connectivity, pricing issues, and unresponsive customer service.

For this category we have to call a tie as neither company stands out above the other.

Bundle Packages: Verizon Fios vs Optimum

Winner: Verizon

As far as expert reviews go, Verizon Fios' TV and internet bundle is very highly regarded. These two services together should be a strong source of information and entertainment to keep any household happy.

Optimum's bundles aren't anything to sneeze at either. By combining services with Optimum you can expect to pay a decent price (compared to purchasing a la carte).

Winner: Verizon vs Optimum

 Verizon

While this fight didn't end in a quick knockout, it is clear that Verizon is the winner. With faster speeds and slightly more availability, Verizon has too much behind its punch for Optimum to overcome.

Thats not to say that Optimum has bad service, but Verizon Fios has been one of the highest respected services for a while (at least by industry experts).
