FAQs about Verizon Fios
What Verizon Fios Home Internet plans are there?
As a completely fiber-optic network, Verizon Fios offers some of the fastest internet speeds in the U.S. Verizon Fios internet plans include the:
- “Better browsing” plan starting around $40 per month
- “Better streaming” plan starting around $60 per month
- “Better everything” plan starting around $80 per month
The prices are typically contingent with other factors, autopay enrollment and other services.
Each of the Verizon Fios Home Internet plans include:
- Fast streaming with reduced buffering as compared to other connection types
- Upload speeds at nearly the same rate as download speeds (usually, upload speeds are noticeably slower)
- 99% connection reliability, even in poor weather
- 24-hour support
Depending on your chosen plan, you might also benefit from limited-time deals such as a free router rental or a Visa Prepaid card.
How fast is Verizon Fios Home Internet?
Fios is Verizon’s entirely fiber-optic network. Fiber internet is the newest technology and generally offers faster speeds compared to cable or DSL internet options.
So what kind of speeds do these features actually translate to? Each plan breaks down as follows:
- “Better browsing” will get you up to around 200 Mbps.
- This speed is ideal for households connecting up to 8 devices to the internet and can download a 1GB of streaming data (say, the beginning of a movie) in under a minute. If you love to surf the web, but don’t need to have 3 different TVs streaming Netflix, this may be the plan for you.
- “Better streaming” ups the speed to around 400 Mbps.
- Downloading an hour-long video at this speed takes around 20 seconds, making it a better choice for customers who have a music and/or movie streaming habit to uphold and households with multiple avid streamers or gamers
- “Better everything” offers download speeds up to around 940 Mbps and upload speeds around 880 Mbps—also referred to as the Fios Gigabit connection.
- This can power around 100 devices simultaneously and download a 2-hour movie in under 2 minutes. If your household are data fiends and love to stream, download, and browse to their heart’s content, this is likely the plan for you.
Does Verizon Fios cap my data?
Unlike the majority of other internet providers, Fios doesn’t have hard caps on the amount of data you can use each month. However, if Verizon feels that your usage is excessively high, expect a letter or some other form of notification from the company letting you know that it is paying attention to your account. They may ask for more information about your usage to understand why your consumption is so high.
What's the difference between Verizon Fios and Verizon High-Speed Internet?
Fios internet may not be available in your area if it hasn’t yet been set up for fiber-optic connections. In those places, Verizon instead offers its high-speed DSL internet plans. So what’s the difference between the two?
Fiber-optic internet is connected via thin glass cables and transferred via light signals (hence the “optic”). This connection type provides for connections up to 1Gbps, making it lightning fast.
DSL internet (which stands for digital subscriber line) is connected via telephone lines and delivers your internet by separating the data frequency from your calling frequency. As such, it’s a slower connection than either fiber-optic or cable internet connections (which use—you guessed it—cable wires to provide service).
If your neighborhood doesn’t yet have access to Fios’ fiber internet, contact Verizon about their high-speed internet plans available in your area. You can likely receive a package and self-install for easy internet access.
Is Verizon Fios internet available in my area?
Because Verizon Fios is a fiber-only internet network, its availability is not quite as wide as many other broadband providers. Its current coverage area is primarily within New England in select cities across the northeast Atlantic states, including cities in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Virginia.
As fiber cables continue to be laid down, Verizon’s Fios network will expand.
What equipment do I need?
Depending on the Verizon Fios services you ordered, you may need a:
- Router
- Set Top Box
- DVR
You should be able to rent or buy the required equipment from Verizon Fios when you order your service.
Do I need to get professional installation?
Generally, a technician will visit your home to set you up with your Verizon internet products. This is especially true if your home is not yet connected via fiber-optic access and needs to have the fiber brought in.
Some services allow you to set up your Fios internet on your own—either pick up the equipment from your local Verizon retailer or request a mailed package of what you need. Verizon offers an online guide to setting up your home system. This also applies if you bundled Fios TV with your internet plan.
