Xfinity vs. AT&T

Article Summary

Xfinity and AT&T are two of the biggest internet providers in the United States. Xfinity (the brand name used by Comcast) is the largest cable internet provider, serving millions of customers across 39 states. AT&T, meanwhile, is the largest telecommunications company in the entire world, and their internet plans are available in all 50 states. If you're in the market for home internet, there's a good chance you've come across one of these ISPs in your search.

With so many Xfinity and AT&T customers—and potential customers—nationwide, we thought it time to compare their respective prices, availability, customer reviews and bundles.

Xfinity vs. AT&T: Internet Speeds

Winner: Xfinity

If you're looking for lightning-fast internet speeds, both Xfinity and AT&T have you covered. Both providers deliver 1 Gbps speeds—which is amazingly fast—via their respective fiber networks.

Xfinity and AT&T offer a lot of variety in their lower and medium speed tiers. AT&T's DSL plans start at 5 Mbps ($40/month) and go up to 100 Mbps, with a lot of plans in between. They also offer a 300 Mbps fiber plan for $70/month. Xfinity's cable plans start at 300 Mbps ($40/month) and top out at 500 Mbps ($60/month), again with many different speeds to choose from between these two extremes.

Given that cable internet tends to deliver speeds that not only meet but frequently exceed what's advertised—and it's generally more stable than DSL—we'll give Xfinity the nod in this category.

Cost, Data and Value for Money

Winner: Xfinity and AT&T (tie)

Monthly Cost

Xfinity and AT&T's internet plan prices fall squarely in line with those of their competitors, offering decent if unexceptional value. Keep in mind that—as with nearly all internet providers—Xfinity and AT&T's advertised prices are good for 12 months, and go up after that. Unless you somehow finagle a way to extend it beyond the "introductory" period.

A 100 Mbps VDSL plan from AT&T runs $50/month, while a 300 Mbps cable internet plan (they don't have a 150 Mbps one) from Xfinity costs $40/month. That's not bad, though cable may have the advantage here as it sometimes delivers speeds that exceed what's advertised, and in general is less susceptible to outages than DSL.

AT&T and Xfinity are ostensibly neck-and-neck when it comes to their fiber offerings. Both sell 1 Gbps fiber plans for $90/month for the first 12 months of service; however, Xfinity's plan includes a huge $1,000 upfront fee, whereas AT&T's is only $99.99.

Data Allowance

AT&T's DSL plans feature 1,000 Gbps/month data caps, while their fiber plans are data cap-free. Similarly, Xfinity's cable internet plans include a 1,000 Gbps/month data cap, while their fiber plans do not. To be fair, 1,000 GB/month is a massive limit that you're very unlikely to hit.

Both providers offer fairly equivalent value overall, so we'll declare this round a draw.

Availability: Xfinity vs. AT&T

Winner: AT&T
When it comes to sheer ubiquity, AT&T has the edge over Xfinity, with a massive coverage area that blankets the entire United States from Miami to Los Angeles. Xfinity (i.e. Comcast) is damn near everywhere too, as the provider sells plans in 39 states and major cities like Boston and Houston. By the numbers, though, we have to hand this category to "Big Blue" (AT&T).

Customer Reviews: Xfinity vs. AT&T

Winner: Xfinity and AT&T

If online reviews are to be believed, both Xfinity and AT&T have ample room for improvement (bear in mind, though, that internet providers are generally the most consistently derided in the United States).

Customers cited Xfinity's high costs and customer service inadequacy as their reasons for unhappiness, while AT&T's customers complained about frequent service outages and slow speeds.

JD Power's annual residential internet service provider customer satisfaction study provides a slightly different perspective. The 2018 study awards AT&T four "power circles" in the west and five in the south and north central regions (which is tops for both); Xfinity, meanwhile, earns either three or four power circles across the board.

It's probably a mistake to take either of these metrics as gospel, though, so we'll declare this round a toss-up.

Bundle Packages: Xfinity vs AT&T

Winner: Xfinity and AT&T (tie)

As you'd expect from these two massive providers, Xfinity and AT&T offer a wide assortment of double and triple play bundles (i.e. internet + phone or TV).

Xfinity makes use of their own Comcast cable service for a variety of TV packages, while AT&T does the same with their own satellite DIRECTV service. Indeed, these are two of the better providers to go with to get exactly what you're looking for from a bundle.

Winner: Xfinity vs AT&T

Winner: Xfinity and AT&T (tie)

In this head-to-head between two of the nation's largest ISPs, Xfinity (Comcast) wins on speed, while AT&T is tops when it comes to overall availability. The two providers are pretty similar when it comes to price/value, bundles, and customer reviews.

Picking an outright winner in this matchup is nigh impossible, as both AT&T and Xfinity have their distinct advantages. As such, we're declaring a draw between the two internet heavyweights.
