Verizon vs. Astound: Which Internet Provider is Better?

Many of us shop for internet plans with one thing in mind: price. If cost is the biggest factor in your decision, Astound is not a bad way to go. The company offers 200Mbps fiber internet service for a mere $30, 600Mbps service for $45, and 1,000Mbps service for just $60. Plus, their upfront fees are reasonable. That's some great bang-for-the-buck. 

Verizon Fios' plans start at $39.99 for 200 Mbps service, which is a strong value as well when you consider that fiber customers report speeds that regularly exceed what's advertised. However, Verizon's upfront fees are higher than Astound's. All things considered, we'll have to give Astound to advantage when it comes to monthly cost.

Data Allowance

Data caps can be a real bummer to worry about. To their credit, Astound's plans all come data cap-free. Verizon's plans, on the other hand, may or may not include data caps, depending on where you live. If your service is in an area with lots of other Verizon internet customers, it may indeed include a data cap.

Customer Reviews: Verizon vs. Astound 

If online customer reviews are to be believed, Verizon has some room for improvement with respect to both their fiber service (i.e. Fios ) and high-speed DSL service. Fiso is more favorably reviewed, though some cited rising bill costs as a major annoyance. The biggest complaint with Verizon's DSL service is outages and slower than advertised speeds. 

Astound, while servicing a far smaller area than Verizon, seems to attract fewer scathing reviews. Folks sound generally pleased with the company's "mom & pop" approach to keeping their customers happy, whether it's issuing refunds, helping with setup, or notifying subscribers of better plans. 

This round goes to Astound. 

Bundle Packages: Verizon vs Astound 

Both Verizon and Astound Broadband Powered by RCN offer a wide array of double and triple play bundles, i.e. internet + phone or TV. A cursory browse through WhistleOut's internet comparison engine would seem to suggest Astound has more bundling options, until you read the fine print that most of these are only available in specific cities or areas (like Boston, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and so on). Verizon's bundles, meanwhile, are more widely available. The win here goes to Verizon.

Both Astound and Verizon offer particular advantages to their customers. While Verizon is a big company with lots of widely available fiber and DSL plans, Astound offers the intimacy of a smaller shop with more personal service and support. While Verizon provides awesomely fast speeds via their Fios network (and potentially even faster ones with their new 5G service), Astound's cable service is imminently reliable. 

Picking a winner here really depends on your specific preferences when it comes to internet service. As such, we'll have to declare this head-to-head matchup a draw between Verizon and Astound.
