Winner: Xfinity

Neither Xfinity nor Verizon are slouches when it comes to speed.

Verizon Fios tops out at a very respectable 940Mbps, and customers seem to be happy with their download and upload speeds with the service. Xfinity, on the other hand, offers most of its fiber customers up to 1200Mbps giving them a slight edge over Verizon.

When it comes to monthly costs Xfinity offers the lowest price, but it's only slightly lower than the base price of Verizon Fios and when you compare the two lowest priced products from both providers it's easy to see that Verizon wins this fight.

Verizon Fios' cheapest plan comes with 100Mbps internet, whereas Xfinity's cheapest plan peaks at 300Mbps.

Installation and Other Fees

Both Verizon and Xfinity charge fees for professional installation, but as is common with internet and telecom companies, they will often offer free or discounted installation to new customers.

You can use your own modem with both services or purchase a modem from either company. Verizon Fios and Xfinity offer monthly payments for their modems.

Data Allowance

Verizon Fios and Xfinity do not have a data cap. Customers are free to binge as much Netflix as their hearts desire.

If this category included expert reviews Verizon Fios would win in a landslide, but the public has a bit of a different opinion.

Verizon Fios customer reviews seem to be on two sides of the extreme. Their good reviews are glowing while their poor reviews are very discouraging. Xfinity, on the other hand, tends to have more middle of the road reviews from their customers. All told, each company averages about the same in customer satisfaction, making this category a draw.

This is a tight fight among two highly regarded internet providers and although Verizon Fios gives customers more bang for their buck, Xfinity is the winner in the battle. A larger coverage map could be enough for Verizon to win, but the fact is they don't have one.

Availability is key and given that Xfinity provides internet coverage to more areas of the country, it is hard to put Verizon over the top. Add to this the fact that Xfinity is blazing a trail with 1.2Gbps internet and they are the winner in this competition between Verizon and Xfinity.
