AT&T vs. Verizon: Internet speeds
Verizon Fios promises top speeds at 940Mbps while AT&T says they can get you to 5,000Mbps. While Verizon Fios is reliable AT&T's 5Gbps Fiber Internet 5000 plan blows Big Red out of the water.
Still, this doesn't mean that Verizon Fios is a snail compared to AT&T. The fact of the matter is, both can provide speeds that are much higher than the average household actually needs. AT&T is the overall winner with its whopping 5Gbps upload and download speeds, but Verizon Fios offers a great 940Mbps Gigabit fiber package that's comparable to AT&T's 1000Mbps fiber plan. Notably, Verizon does deliver a 2Gbps multi-gig plan, but only in New York City for the moment.
AT&T vs. Verizon: Plans
AT&T has more home internet plans than Verizon with five fiber plans to Verizon Fios's three. Additionally, AT&T fives you DSL and fixed wireless, so you've got a bevy of choices depending on where you live. This also means AT&T delivers cheaper plan options with DSL and fixed wireless. Compare Verizon and AT&T home internet plans below:
Moreover, Verizon and AT&T also offer 5G home internet, which beams the same mobile internet signal that you'd receive on your phone to a modem that gets distributed throughout your house via Wi-Fi. Verizon and AT&T 5G and 4G LTE home internet is a great choice for folks in harder-to-reach areas without much fiber or cable. Peruse AT&T and Verizon 5G home internet plans below:
AT&T vs Verizon: Cost, data, and value for money
Monthly cost
Verizon and AT&T have pretty similar prices for their comparable internet plans with the former having slightly higher prices. On the whole, AT&T's prices are a bit cheaper than Verizon's across the board. For instance, AT&T sets you back $80/month for its 1000Mbps fiber plan, while Verizon Fios charges $90/month. Of course, this isn't universally true, as Verizon Fios 300 is $5/month less than AT&T Internet 300. It's not a huge difference, but AT&T has a slight advantage with its more cost-effective plans.
Notably, Verizon does give you a competitive $25 off with its Fios plans with an eligible Verizon wireless plan. On the flipside, AT&T also provides bundle deals of up to 25% off your monthly bill with home internet and wireless mobile
Installation and other fees
AT&T and Verizon both charge installation fees for the internet services they provide (a one-time $99 fee). Both companies charge about the same for installation. Neither company will charge you to use their equipment if you don't have equipment compatible with their services.
As is the norm in the internet service provider world, both AT&T and Verizon will offer free installation to new subscribers.
Data allowance
Verizon Fios does not have data caps on any of their plans. AT&T's internet also comes with unlimited data, so stream, game, and surf the web to your heart's content.
Deals
AT&T and Verizon are big companies that want your patronage. Both companies are not shy when it comes to extending deals to new customers. Deals you can expect to see from either company might include giveaways (free streaming subscriptions, gift cards, etc.), free installation, and low introductory rates.
AT&T vs. Verizon: Perks
Verizon Fios throws in a six-month subscription to Disney+ for its gigabit subscribers, plus you can save $25/month on your bill by bundling Verizon Fios with a mobile phone plan. AT&T doesn't typically offer any perks unless they're part of a limited-time deal. Since this boils down to what you'd rather have and the plans you're signing up for, we're calling this a draw.
AT&T vs. Verizon: Availability
There's not much of a contest here. Verizon Fios has very low availability while AT&T has a very strong presence across several states. Verizon Fios' lack of availability is one of its key weak points on a service that has otherwise received consistently favorable reviews (from experts anyway).
AT&T vs. Verizon: Customer reviews
In an industry that isn't known for always keeping customers happy, AT&T and Verizon pretty much run with the pack when it comes to customer satisfaction. AT&T scored well in JD Power's US Residential Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study. On the other hand, Verizon did well in the American Customer Satisfaction Index. Generally, you'll get great customer service either way.
AT&T vs. Verizon: Bundle packages and deals
Verizon Fios is known for the excellent bundled services they offer – with "custom TV" available as a partner to its super-fast internet. AT&T, however, just barely wins this one mainly on the strength of the crazy amount of bundling options they offer.
If you can think up a combo of TV, internet, and even phone, AT&T probably has a bundle option/deal for it.
Moreover, you'll find bundle deals with both ISPs. AT&T bundle deals give you up to 25% off of your monthly bill with a home internet plan and mobile service (only cable and fiber are eligible). Meanwhile, drops $25 off of your bill with select home internet and mobile phone plans with its bundle deals. Ultimately, both ISPs give you multiple ways to save.
AT&T vs. Verizon: Recap
You might be able to call AT&T the winner just by their advantage in availability alone coupled with lower prices. However, the fact of the matter is that if you happen to have both AT&T and Verizon services available to you, you are going to have a really hard time picking which one to buy.
So, the smart thing to do is compare plans and find which one is perfect for you and your household's needs. Here are just some plans available from AT&T.
