Cox Internet Outage

To find out if there is a Cox internet outage in your area:

  • Log in to “My Account” on the Cox website from your mobile browser
  • Use the Cox mobile app to find an outage alert
  • Sign up for text notifications for updates on the Cox internet outage

If there's no system outage, you can troubleshoot a bad internet connection by rebooting your modem, router, and/or computer.

As one of the largest cable and internet service providers in the country, Cox Communications is not immune to the occasional internet outage.

If you are a Cox customer and your internet is down, we’ll guide you through checking if there’s a network outage and what you should do while waiting to get back online.

How to check If Cox has an internet outage

Your internet could go down for a number of reasons, but most commonly, there's either a problem with your home network/equipment or a full-service outage. Cox provides simple ways to check if there is an outage in your area, but to do so, you’ll likely need your phone’s mobile data to access the internet.

To check if there’s a Cox internet outage in your area, you can either:

  • Visit Cox’s outage support page from your mobile browser and log in to “My Account” to see if your area is affected.
  • Open the Cox app on your phone and look for an outage alert.

In either case, if there is an internet service outage, you’ll instantly see an alert as soon as you are logged in.

What to do during a Cox internet outage

To stay updated on the outage, opt-in to receive text message alerts in the outage alert notification on the Cox app or in your “My Account” portal. Cox recommends that you do not try to reboot your equipment (e.g., your modem/router), as this may cause other issues.

If you really need an internet connection, your phone might solve your problem. Most newer phones can function as mobile hotspots, allowing you to connect other devices to your cellular data. Check out our easy guide to mobile hotspots for more information on tethering your devices to your phone’s internet.

You could also just sit back and binge some Netflix or Hulu on your phone, or maybe enjoy some time disconnected.

Tired of dealing with internet outages?

What to do when there is no outage

If, after checking with Cox, you find no outage in your area, the issue is probably on your end.

To try to solve the problem, first check to see whether your modem/router is getting power. Most home internet equipment will have flashing lights letting you know that it’s on. If there is no power, try switching to another wall outlet to see if the issue is with your electrical source. If that doesn’t work, you might have to get a new modem and/or router.

If your equipment is powered properly, now is the time to reboot your modem by turning it off and back on again. Most of the time this will solve the problem, and you should be able to get right back to work. If you’re still not getting service, check to ensure your account is in good standing. Pay any outstanding balances to get your internet back.

Still not finding the problem? Contact Cox tech support 24/7 at (866) 867-7644.

Fixing a slow Cox internet connection

Sometimes slow internet can be just as annoying as no internet at all. If you have an internet connection but it’s slower than normal, you can take some steps to try to speed it up.

First, run an internet speed test. This could determine if the problem is with your internet connection or with your computer or other connected devices. If the speed test is abnormally low, try the classic reboot trick. If turning your modem off and back on doesn’t fix the issue, you might need to contact Cox tech support.

Conversely, if the test results show that your internet speeds are pretty fast, your problem is probably with the computer or device you're using. First, try closing any unnecessary applications that might be using up your bandwidth. Also, disconnect any other devices you don't need at the moment. This might free things up and help your computer optimize its internet signal. If these tricks aren’t working, you might want to—you guessed it—reboot your device.

Best Cox internet plans

Cox’s internet offerings range from low-speed budget plans to superfast gigabit plans. Cox also offers several bundles which typically come with lower rates (compared to buying services a la carte). If you have a big family with multiple devices connected to the internet, you might want a plan with faster speeds. If it’s just you, and you’re looking to save money, you might be perfectly fine with a 10Mbps or 25Mbps plan. Cox even offers prepaid internet service for a contract-free setup.
