They are a great way to connect to the internet without burning through your mobile plan's mobile data. Getting connected to a hotspot requires enabling Wi-Fi on your device and finding one of Xfinity’s nodes.

After you've found an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot, you can easily join by selecting it in the settings section of your device and signing in with your Xfinity account information.

How to find Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots

Before you can connect to Xfinity's mobile hotspots, you must first find one. The good news is there are thousands of them scattered across the country in businesses and public areas. You'll see that most of these hotspots are clustered along the East Coast and include a smattering of cities in the West. They're also predominantly located in urban areas. That said, if you live in a state with a heavy Xfinity presence, you can often find at least one hotspot in many rural communities, too.

Xfinity offers three types of mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, some more secure than others. Below are the types of Xfinity networks available to use on your mobile device.

For the safest browsing experience, make sure to connect to XFINITY networks. These are secure and encrypted, so it's much more difficult for your information to be stolen. If you connect to xfinitywifi or cablewifi networks, make sure to keep your guard up. These are unsecure public networks and some can be accessed for free by non-Xfinity customers, so treat them like any other source of public Wi-Fi. Consider using a VPN to protect your information or avoid logging into things like banking apps.

How to connect to and use Xfinity Mobile hotspots

Xfinity Mobile customers can access thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots within Xfinity’s home internet service areas. Here’s how to connect to them with your Xfinity Mobile compatible smartphone:

Enable Wi-Fi on your mobile device. This setting may be in your shortcuts or in the connection settings (like Settings > Network & internet > Internet).
Locate a hotspot. Look for XFINITY or xfinitywifi in your device’s list of available networks and tap on the one you want to connect to.
Sign in for hotspot access. Connecting for the first time requires logging in to your Xfinity account. If you don’t see a prompt, open your device’s web browser.

If you're having trouble finding a hotspot in the connection list, you can use Xfinity’s online map or check in the Xfinity app under the Connect tab.

Setting up a secure connection on macOS and Windows

Laptops (or desktops) work with Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots. Here’s how to access secure hotspots.

On Windows:

Head to Settings > Network & Internet.
Pick Xfinity from the Wi-Fi list.
Enter your Xfinity ID and password.
Hit Connect.

For macOS:

Navigate to Settings > Wi-Fi.
Choose Xfinity from the Wi-Fi list.
Input your Xfinity ID and password.
Re-enter your login credentials.
Wait for the device passcode prompt.

Alternatively, if you don’t need to use a secure network, manually hop on Wi-Fi.

Connect to an Xfinity network (i.e., xfinitywifi).
Fire up your web browser.
Enter your Xfinity ID and password on the sign-in page.

Can anyone connect to Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots?

Most hotspots are limited to Xfinity Mobile and internet subscribers. However, the company does offer featured hotspots in some public areas that operate as free Xfinity Wi-Fi sources. Anyone can use these hotspots whether they are Xfinity customers or not. To find these featured hotspots, check Xfinity's map and look at the additional details for the hotspots near you.

Why you should use Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots

Xfinity wireless access points let you connect to cable internet around the country, helping you conserve your monthly mobile data. Utilizing these access points also prevents the need to purchase a mobile hotspot device. All this makes them ideal for people who want to save money on their wireless or internet bill, like students or young adults.

Despite awesome availability, Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot speeds were somewhat slow in our testing. General web browsing, like reading articles by your favorite WhistleOut writer (yours truly, of course) or Zoom teleconferencing, works fine.

However, you may see buffering when streaming Stranger Things on Netflix in 4K, and we wouldn’t recommend hopping into an intense Counter-Strike: Global Offensive matchup using these hotspots. But an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot is an excellent perk if you’re just looking to save data while perusing Twitter or TikTok.

Xfinity Mobile: Our take

If you’re using Comcast Xfinity as your internet service provider (ISP), Xfinity Mobile is a worthy consideration. In our Xfinity Mobile review, we appreciated its solid 4G LTE footprint, attractive unlimited plans, and competitive multi-line family plan discounts. However, Xfinity Mobile limits sign-ups to existing Xfinity home internet subscribers.

Best Xfinity Mobile plans

Xfinity Mobile offers two unlimited plans: Unlimited, and Premium Unlimited. You must have an active Xfinity Internet plan to hook up with Xfinity Mobile, so check out the internet plans below if you aren't a customer yet.

Both plans include at least some access to premium data on Verizon's network. Premium data receives the highest priority on mobile networks during network congestion, so it shouldn't slow down in most circumstances. After you use up your premium allotment, your data remains unlimited, but your speeds are subject to deprioritization. These plans also offer mobile hotspots—the kind that turns your phone into a portable router—and access to the Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot network. Pricing is generally cheaper than comparable plans from big carriers like Verizon and AT&T, but you can drop it even more with a family plan.
