Mint Mobile and Xfinity Mobile are popular mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), which provide cheaper plans than big carriers. Mint Mobile boasts incredible savings for anyone, while Xfinity Mobile lets Xfinity internet customers enjoy lower phone bills.

Considering these two smaller carriers’ coverage, the T-Mobile-backed Mint Mobile offers exceptional 5G coverage, while the Verizon-powered Xfinity Mobile provides better 4G LTE coverage. Plan and pricing structures differ among Mint and Xfinity, so the question here isn't which carrier is best—it’s which service is right for you. Let's compare Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile with a look at the MVNOs' coverage, plans, data allocations, and customer service.

How we evaluated Mint vs. Xfinity
  • Price & value
  • We ensured you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing on the essentials to keep you connected.
  • High-speed data
  • We looked at whether the amount of guaranteed “premium” data was reasonable for the plan price, and flagged if you’re being overcharged for data you likely don’t need.
  • Coverage & network reliability
  • We evaluated each carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!).
  • Plan extras and perks
  • If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Coverage

Mint Mobile operates on T-Mobile’s nationwide network—and T-Mobile trounces the competition with its 5G footprint spanning 53% of the United States. Accordingly, Mint Mobile offers best-in-class 5G coverage without the big carrier prices attached. However, T-Mobile's 4G LTE lags behind both AT&T and Verizon, with especially spotty coverage in rural areas.

Piggybacking off Verizon's towers, Xfinity Mobile delivers reliable 4G LTE signals nationwide on Verizon's tried-and-true network. Whether you're in a city, the sticks, or somewhere in between, you'll appreciate mostly full bars. But Verizon's 5G network comes in dead last compared to its rivals, blanketing just 12.77% of the nation.

Coverage is a draw considering their differences. We recommend Mint Mobile for folks in urban or suburban areas seeking outstanding 5G service, while Xfinity Mobile is a good alternative for strong 4G LTE. Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Price

Mint Mobile's superb savings make it one of our favorite MVNOs. Its unlimited plan sets you back as little as $30 per month ($15 per month for new customers). You can also find a $25 per month 20GB tier, $20 per month 15GB package, and budget-friendly $15 per month 5GB option. However, Mint's best pricing requires a year-long pre-payment. Sure, you'll save in the long run, but Mint Mobile requires a bulk upfront sum rather than paying at the beginning or end of each billing cycle.

By contrast, Xfinity Mobile offers two unlimited plans: $40 per month for Unlimited and $50 per month for Premium Unlimited.

Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile
4.5 out of 5 overall

  • Excellent 5G network
  • Affordable unlimited plan
  • Middling 4G LTE network
Xfinity Mobile
Xfinity Mobile
4 out of 5 overall

  • Reliable 4G LTE network
  • Multiple unlimited plans
  • Underwhelming 5G coverage

The clear price winner is Mint Mobile and its significantly cheaper plans. Sure, Xfinity Mobile throws in some goodies like mobile hotspot data, but Mint Mobile doesn't break the bank.

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Availability

Besides their parent carriers, one of the biggest differences between Mint Mobile and Xfinity Mobile is availability. Anyone can easily sign up for Mint Mobile. Switching is pretty simple—you can keep your number, bring your own phone, and even switch if you still owe money.

On the other hand, Xfinity Mobile is available only to Xfinity internet customers. For Spectrum Internet customers, there's a similar Verizon MVNO, Spectrum Mobile, that you can take advantage of. Since Mint doesn't require a specific internet service provider (ISP), it's a better option for most people.

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Perks

Neither Mint Mobile nor Xfinity Mobile offer much in the way of perks. While most major carriers bundle streaming service subscriptions or cloud data storage, Xfinity Mobile and Mint Mobile don't.

Although it's rare for smaller carriers to offer perks, some MVNOs hook you up. For instance, US Mobile lets you pick from various music, video, and game streaming service subscriptions with unlimited plans. Cricket Wireless's top-shelf unlimited tier features HBO Max with ads and cloud storage. Likewise, Metro by T-Mobile offers 100GB of Google One cloud storage with two of its unlimited packages.

Since Mint Mobile and Xfinity Mobile lack perks, this round is like a clip-on—a sad tie.

Winner: Tie

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: High-Speed Data

Although unlimited data is technically unlimited, there's typically a data deprioritization threshold. Once you reach that allocation during a given billing cycle, you may experience slower data speeds for the remainder of the month. With its unlimited plan, Mint Mobile delivers unlimited of high-speed data, with potential slower speeds if you surpass 50GB in a month.

On the other hand, Xfinity Mobile provides unlimited premium data with its plans. You get 30GB with Unlimited, and truly unlimited data with Premium Unlimited. Here's how these plans break down:

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Premium data
Carrier Plan Data
Mint Mobile Unlimited 50GB
Mint Mobile 20GB 20GB
Mint Mobile 15GB 15GB
Mint Mobile 5GB 5GB
Xfinity Mobile Premium Unlimited Unlimited
Xfinity Mobile Unlimited 30GB

When comparing unlimited plan prices for this Verizon MVNO vs. T-Mobile MVNO match-up, Mint Mobile wins. Its best possible unlimited plan costs less and nets you more premium data than Xfinity Mobile's cheaper unlimited options. Still, for the winner, we're sticking to the most data overall, so Xfinity Mobile takes the cake.

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Mobile Hotspot Data

A mobile hotspot lets you use cellular data for internet connectivity virtually anywhere you've got a few bars. While you can use a dedicated hotspot device like a MiFi router, phone tethering lets you share your phone's mobile data with connected devices, including phones and game consoles for internet on the go. Xfinity Mobile gives you a 30GB mobile hotspot allowance with Premium Unlimited, and unlimited hotspot data capped at 600kbps with Unlimited.

Although Mint Mobile allows hotspot tethering, the data burned comes out of your total pool (with a cap at 20GB on Unlimited). Since Mint doesn’t have a dedicated hotspot allocation, picking a winner is easy: Xfinity Mobile.

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Family Plans

Family plans lower your monthly bill when there are multiple lines with a carrier. Savings are so sweet that we recommend signing up with a significant other, friends, or roommates if you can't find a family member willing to chip in. Mint Mobile's Modern Family plan gets you its cheapest pricing, which you can normally get only when you pay upfront for 12 months of service. But with two or more lines, you can get that rate in three-month increments, so you'll pay anywhere from $5–$10 less than normal.

Xfinity Mobile's Unlimited goes for $40 per month, or $30 each for two or more lines. Premium Unlimited is $50 per month for one line or $40 per month with two or more lines.

Here's how Mint Mobile and Xfinity Mobile multi-line savings stack up:

Family plan pricing breakdown
Carrier Plan Single-line monthly price Monthly family plan
per-line price
(2 or more lines)
Mint Mobile 5GB $15 (12 months)
$20 (6 months)
$25 (3 months)
$15 (3 months)
Mint Mobile 15GB $20 (12 months)

Mint Mobile 20GB $25 (12 months)

$35 (6 months)
$40 (3 months)

Xfinity Mobile Unlimited $40

Xfinity Mobile Premium Unlimited $50

With family plans as low as $30 per line without multi-month prepayment, Xfinity Mobile gets the W.

 Winner: Xfinity Mobile

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile: Customer Service

Mobile carriers aren't renowned for excellent customer service, and it's no exception when contrasting this Verizon MVNO vs. T-Mobile MVNO. According to Trustpilot, Xfinity scored a paltry 1.3 out of 5 stars, while Mint Mobile managed a respectable 3.6 out of 5. In our experience, Mint Mobile goes above and beyond with customer service, even helping your family move to Mint from another carrier.

 Winner: Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile vs. Xfinity Mobile Recap

Ultimately, both Mint Mobile and Xfinity Mobile bring a lot to the table. While Xfinity Mobile ticks many boxes, edging out the massively popular Mint Mobile in several categories like premium data and mobile hotspot allowances, its higher pricing and limited availability hold it back. Heck, if I weren't so pleased with my Google Fiber service, I'd consider switching to Xfinity internet just to opt into Xfinity Mobile.

As is, we recommend Mint Mobile to most folks since anyone can sign up. You'll appreciate its incredible 5G coverage, extremely affordable prices, and great family plan discounts. But for current or future Xfinity internet customers, Xfinity Mobile is a compelling choice, particularly for those in more rural areas where Verizon's 4G LTE provides more reliable service than the Un-carrier.

Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it both to other plans from the same carrier, as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate Mint Mobile and Xfinity Mobile.
