If you think you're experiencing an internet outage with your Xfinity Internet service, there are a few steps to troubleshoot the problem:
- Check for outages on Xfinity's My Account
- Check for outages using the Comcast Outage Map
- Set up text message alerts for outage updates
- Troubleshoot or reboot all of your internet devices
No matter which internet service provider you’re with, the odds are you’ll experience an outage at one point or another. This article will help you in the event that you experience an internet outage in your area with your Xfinity service.
How to check for Xfinity Internet outages
If you think you might be experiencing an Xfinity internet outage in your area, there are a handful of different ways that you can check to make sure:
- Xfinity’s My Account on the Xfinity website
- Via the Comcast Outage Map
- Automatic updates via text message alerts
Checking for outages with Xfinity’s My Account
If your preference is to check your account via the My Account portal on Xfinity’s website, the steps below should help you navigate the process:
- Select either “My Account” or “Sign in” from the Xfinity website’s homepage
- Select “Services” at the top of the page
- Navigate to and select “Status Center” link
- A colored banner should appear with a message—red meaning there is currently an outage in your area, and green meaning everything should be functioning just fine
Checking for Outages with the Comcast outage map
If you’re looking for a bit more information and a visual aid to boot, the Comcast Outage Map may serve as a more worthwhile way to check for outages:
- Select either “My Account” or “Sign in” from the Xfinity website’s homepage
- Select “Services” at the top of the page
- Navigate to and select “Status Center” link
- Select the button “Outage Map”
Checking for outages with text message alerts
Another convenient way to keep up to date on outages is with text message alerts. This can be helpful if you know of an outage and are waiting to get it resolved or if you’d like to check for outages you might not yet be aware of. You can text “OUT” to 266278 (C-O-M-C-S-T) for an instant status update. Additionally, you can set your account up to notify you when an outage has been resolved by following the steps below:
- Select either “My Account” or “Sign in” from the Xfinity website’s homepage
- Select “Services” at the top of the page
- Navigate to and select “Status Center” link
- When the status banner appears, select “text me when it’s resolved”
- Input your telephone number when prompted
What if there is an outage in your area?
Because most internet service providers are made aware of outages fairly quickly, there isn’t anything you need to do besides sit tight and wait for the issue to be resolved.
Even though the outage will take care of itself in due time, this can still serve as a great inconvenience. If you absolutely need internet access, your best bet is to use your phone’s hotspot network (if your plan has this feature enabled) or find an alternative WiFi location (coffee shops, libraries, etc.)—but be sure to be mindful of your device security when accessing networks in public.
What if Xfinity isn’t experiencing an outage?
Sometimes the culprit for a faulty internet outage isn’t due to an outage, but rather because of a physical connection issue. If you’ve already followed the steps above and still can’t seem to get your internet working properly, try these steps:
Resetting gateway or standalone modem:
- Remove batteries (if applicable) and unplug your gateway or modem
- Wait about 30 seconds and then reconnect the power supply (reinsert batteries as well if applicable)
- Wait until your gateway/modem light is no longer flashing and shows a solid light (2 minutes or so)
- Try accessing the internet again with your device
Resetting modem or WiFi router:
- Unplug and remove any batteries
- Wait 30 seconds before reinserting any batteries and before reconnecting the power supply
- Check for a a solid light (should not be flashing)
- Reconnect the power, and give it at least 2 minutes to complete its restart
- Check your internet connection with a connected device.
How to speed up your Xfinity Internet connection
If you’ve already checked for an outage in your area and tried the steps above—but your internet is still slow—there may be some steps you can take to both diagnose and improve the issue.
The first thing you’ll want to do is use a tool to check your internet speeds as a starting point. You can use our tool—completely free—to get yourself started.
After you’ve recorded your results, there are a handful of other steps you can take that may help improve your speeds:
- Switch to a wired connection if possible (via ethernet cable)—speeds usually improve, in addition to stabilizing your connection overall
- Check for memory issues or viruses that may exist on your device. Deleting your cache for specific applications may help as well
- Switch the channel settings on your router/gateway, as overlapping frequencies can result in connection interference (only applies to wireless connections)
- Try moving your devices closer to your router/gateway, or vice versa
Once you’ve taken the above measures, it’s a good idea to test your internet speed once again and see if there are any noticeable improvements. If your speeds are still slow, consider upgrading your hardware (modem, gateway, or router), but if all else fails, it may make sense to consider switching to another ISP that better suits your needs.
