Woman Setting Up Spectrum Internet

If you’ve decided to go with Spectrum for your internet service provider (ISP), your next step is ordering the service and installing it. Follow our guide for Spectrum internet installation and you can save some on annoying installation fees. We’ll also let you know how to activate your Spectrum modem and what internet equipment is worth buying or renting directly from Spectrum.

Normally, Spectrum internet professional installation will cost you $65. That money would be better spent this Friday night at a restaurant. Let’s save some money and go the DIY route with your Spectrum internet. The first thing you’ll need is a customer self-installation kit.

Order Your Spectrum Self-Installation Kit

Spectrum's self-installation kit is totally free. You can request one over the phone or online when you purchase your internet plan. If you’ve already signed up for your internet plan and forgot to request a self-installation kit, you can always contact Spectrum customer service and have one mailed to you. Keep in mind though that while the kit itself is free, Spectrum does charge a $30 activation fee.

When you get your customer self-installation kit, here’s all the pieces that you should see:

  • Welcome guide and instructions
  • Cable modem
  • 2 power cables
  • 2 Coaxial cable
  • Coax splitter
  • Ethernet cable

Double-check that you have all the items mentioned above, and then you’ll be ready to start setting up your Spectrum internet.

How to Install Spectrum Internet

There are only five steps to hook up your Spectrum cable modem and router, so don’t get discouraged! Let’s get started.

  1. Grab the coax cable.  Plug one end into a cable outlet and the other end into your cable modem.
  2. Connect a power cable to your modem and then plug the other end in an outlet.
  3. Wait a few minutes for your modem to start up (this can take up to five minutes). Once you see the online indicator light stop blinking, your modem is ready to go.
  4. Find the Ethernet cable and connect it from your modem to your wireless router. Grab the second power cable and connect it from your wireless router to your power outlet.
  5. Wait until you see the Wi-Fi status light turn into a solid green and you’re good to go.

Now you can connect your computer to your new Spectrum Wi-Fi network and work on how to activate your Spectrum modem. Check out the back of your router or the stickers on your installation kit to get your network name and password.

How to Activate Your Spectrum Internet Service

Now that you have everything hooked up, it’s time to complete your Spectrum modem activation. Open an internet browser on your computer that’s connected to your new Spectrum Wi-Fi network. You should magically be directed to the Spectrum activation page upon opening your browser.

If the magic doesn’t happen, you can always type in spectrum.net/support/self-install-internet/ into your URL bar, and that will get you where you need to go. Follow the on-screen instructions from there, and you should have your Spectrum internet up and running in no time.

Spectrum Internet Professional Install

If everything you just read seemed overwhelming, you can always just opt for the professional installation. There’s no shame in it! It will cost you $65 to have someone come out and set up your internet service. You won’t need to worry about setting up your internet service incorrectly, and you’ll have a professional on-site in case anything goes wrong.

How to prepare for your professional installation

  • Clear out the area around your cable and power outlets. You don’t want to force a Spectrum internet installer to rearrange your furniture.
  • Have a smartphone or computer ready to connect and test the Spectrum WiFi connection.

Buying or Renting Internet Equipment

One of the best things about Spectrum internet is that it gives you a modem, but they do charge you for a Wi-Fi router. You have the option to either buy the Wi-Fi router outright or rent it for an additional $10/month. This is similar to other internet service providers (like my own ISP, Xfinity) so it is something to keep in mind, but definitely not abnormal.

(Not sure about the differences between each hardware type? Our internet equipment guide can help bring you up to speed.)

Buying new internet equipment

If you want to buy a souped-up router, or you already own one, make sure to check out Spectrum’s recommended modems first. This will spare you the headache of buying a router or modem that doesn’t work with Spectrum.

Should I buy a new router?

If your Spectrum internet service will be used by more than five people at a time, a third-party router can help boost your Wi-Fi signal, allowing more users to stream, game, and browse at the same time.

Do I Get Spectrum Internet in My Area?

Before you get your heart set on Spectrum internet, let’s make sure you get Spectrum internet in your neighborhood. Enter your street address in our internet tool. Look for the white box where it says "Enter Street Address" in the top left corner. After doing so, look for Spectrum internet plans to populate in the search results. If you see Spectrum internet in your results, that confirms Spectrum services your area.

What Spectrum Internet Plan Should I Choose?

Spectrum Internet has three stand-alone broadband internet options to choose from. Here’s how the pricing and download speeds break down for each Spectrum broadband internet plan:

Spectrum internet plans
Plan Download Speed Price
Internet Advantage 100Mbps $30/month
Internet Premier 500Mbps $50/month
Internet Gig 1Gbps $60/month
Internet 2 Gig 2Gbps $90/month

What Spectrum internet plan you choose all depends on what you do on the internet, and how many people you share an internet connection with. If you have a house full of streamers and gamers, you’d all be happier with a Spectrum Internet Gig plan for your speeds, but if it’s just you and maybe a partner, you could get by with the basic Spectrum internet plan for your speeds. Check out our internet speed guide to find out exactly what Spectrum plan will work best for you.

My Wi-Fi wireless speeds aren’t fast enough

If you experience a lot of latency connected to your Wi-Fi router, we recommend buying a WiFi extender. Your wireless speeds depend largely on proximity to your Spectrum cable modem. You can use a WiFi extender to narrow the gap between your devices and your WiFi hotspot connection and increase your wireless speeds.

Bundling Spectrum internet and TV

Because Spectrum is also a cable TV provider, you can bundle your internet and TV services together and save a bit of cash on each. Luckily, you can also self-install your Spectrum TV using the kit that arrives along with your internet set-up equipment.

To self-install your Spectrum TV:

  • Hook one end of the provided coax cable up to the Spectrum cable box, then hook the other end up to your wall cable outlet.
  • Plug the cable box's power cord into the electrical outlet.
  • Take the HDMI cord from your install kit and connect the cable box to your television.
  • Turn on your Spectrum TV cable box and, using the remote, find the correct input screen that your HDMI cord is plugged into.
  • Go online to Spectrum's service activation page to activate your TV package.
