Xfinity vs GFiber

Xfinity vs GFiber: Internet Speeds

Winner: Xfinity

Xfinity and GFiber each offer customers gigabit internet speeds, but instead of topping out at 1Gbps like GFiber, Xfinity's speeds continue climbing all the way to 2Gbps. So if it's speed you need, then Xfinity's got you covered.

Xfinity offers cable internet in addition to fiber. This gives customers the option to get bandwidths that are in the tens and hundreds of megabits per second without having to pay gigabit prices. However, the one downside of cable is that it is subject to slowing during times of network congestion.

Data and Value

Winner: Google Fiber

Monthly Cost

Xfinity offers 50Mbps plans that start at just $9.95/month, which is great for most users. If you don't need gigabit speeds, Xifinity prices are indeed appealing. However, it's still important to keep in mind that cable can slow during network congestion, whereas fiber internet isn't affected by it.

The real difference between the two companies' offerings becomes clear when you start comparing their fiber plans. While Xfinity's monthly gigabit plan prices might be lower than GFiber's, Xfinity has a much higher upfront fee.

Data Allowance

GFiber offers their customers unlimited data, no matter which plan you're signing up for. While Xfinity offers unlimited data with their fiber plans, they do cap their monthly cable data allowance. However, that cap is set at a whopping 1000GB or 1TB per month.

If seeing a data cap scares you, it's helpful to think of that allowance in terms of streaming usage. For perspective's sake, to use 1Tb of data per month—that would be equal to 4 people streaming HD quality videos for 5 hours a day, every single day, all month long. Knowing that, if the 1TB cap still scares you, then GFiber might be your clear winner here.

Deals

Both Xfinity and GFiber offer deals for new customers throughout the year. However, in terms of monthly costs—which is where most of us need a deal—Xfinity offers their customers a price lock guarantee for 12 months. However, GFiber won't charge you for installation, your modem, or make you sign a contract—which is huge.

Availability: Xfinity vs GFiber

Winner: Xfinity

In terms of availability, Xfinity is available in about 40 states and serves over 20 million customers. GFiber is available in less than 10 states and serves about 500,000 customers. With numbers like these, it's pretty clear that Xfinity's customer bandwidth is much higher than GFiber's.

Customer Reviews: Xfinity vs GFiber

Winner: Xfinity and GFiber

A lot of factors can impact the quality of your internet service—and some issues are simply out of a provider's control. Customer service is not one of them.

Xfinity's customers might have slightly less positive things to say about their provider's customer service, though they've been around longer than GFiber and service a lot more customers. As such, it seems only fair to say that Xfinity and GFiber offer comparable customer care.

Bundle Packages: Xfinity vs GFiber

Winner: Xfinity and GFiber

Both Xfinity and GFiber offer bundle packages for internet plus home phone and/or TV.

Xfinity will throw in premium channels and faster speeds when you sign up for their bundle, whereas GFiber will often to throw in free professional installation and a free modem rental. Keep in mind that if you own your own modem, Xfinity offers you a chance to save on installation with their "self-install" option—which is best for customers that plan on sticking with their service long-term.

Because the quality of bundle packages is so subjective, it's tough to declare a winner here. It's up to you if you want a lower overall cost in lieu of faster speeds and more premium channels, or the other way around. Both providers have stellar bundle options to offer you.

Winner: Xfinity vs GFiber

 Xfinity

With Xfinity, you'll get the fastest speeds, the lowest monthly cost, great reliability, and a huge monthly data allowance. But if you're one of the lucky few that has access to GFiber, it would be silly not to go with them–it costs nothing to sign up and you won't be stuck in a contract so you can simply cancel if you don't like their service.

If you want to do some comparing on your own, take a look below to see how Xfinity's and GFiber's plans stack up for you.
