Xfinity Internet Plans

Xfinity prices vary depending on location and maximum speeds (the faster the maximum speed, the more expensive the plan). Prices range from /month for 25Mbps to /month for 2Gbps (2,000Mbps). Xfinity discounts most plans at an introductory rate that lasts 12 months. Anybody signing up with this internet provider should expect a price increase after a year of service.

Xfinity's cable internet plans include a 1,000GB/month data usage limit, while its fiber plans are unlimited.

What we like: Availability

Xfinity has one of the biggest service footprints in the country. This availability means that it keeps a huge chunk of the population connected. In our modern world, where internet access is vital, we like a company with a built-out infrastructure that provides broadband connections to the masses.

What we like: Choices

Xfinity sells a plethora of internet plans. The plan options will depend on your location, but generally speaking, you should have some choices if Xfinity covers your area. These choices give you a better chance to find a plan that fits your needs and budget. You can even select Xfinity Prepaid Internet plans for no-contract connectivity.

What we like: Speeds

Speed is one of the biggest priorities when people shop for internet plans. With fiber speeds reaching as fast as 2Gbps, Xfinity gives you plenty of speed to support your large household of heavy internet users. However, If gigabit internet is overkill for you, Xfinity offers plenty of lower max speed options that do not cost quite as much.

If you already have Xfinity and are wondering if it lives up to your speed expectations, run it through our Xfinity speed test.

What could be improved: Customer service

Xfinity is a Comcast brand, and that says more than enough about its customer service for many people. Comcast is notorious for having horrible customer service, topping “worst customer service” lists throughout the years, particularly when it comes to assistance with Xfinity outages. The much-maligned customer service might have improved a little recently; however, it will have to continue that trend over a longer period to shake its bad reputation.

What could be improved: Prices and fees

Yes, Xfinity does sell some budget-friendly below-$40 plans, but overall its rates are on the high end compared to other ISPs. What's more, Xfinity has some of the worst upfront costs to cover installation (if you don't opt for self-installation) and equipment such as its cable modem and router combo, other Xfinity gateways, or the Xfinity xFi Pod WiFi extender.

Xfinity Internet Coverage

Xfinity is one of only three land-based internet service providers covering more than 30% of the country. In fact, AT&T is the only non-satellite internet company with a larger footprint than Xfinity. The majority of Xfinity's coverage consists of cable internet. Its fiber internet is much smaller.

You can find Xfinity internet service in 39 states. Its presence is especially strong along both coasts (excluding Maine and North Carolina), and it has service in Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana.

Xfinity Internet vs. Competitors

Since Xfinity is one of the country's three largest internet service providers, comparing it to the other two largest providers seems fitting. Let's see how Xfinity Internet stacks up against AT&T Internet and Charter Spectrum.

Xfinity vs. other ISPs

Xfinity AT&T Internet Spectrum
Connection type Cable, fiber Fiber, DSL/fiber Cable
Speeds 15Mbps-2Gbps 18Mbps-5Gbps 200Mbps-1Gbps
Data caps 1TB (cable)
Unlimited (fiber)
>100Mbps-Unlimited
<100Mbps-1TB
Unlimited

Starting at $19.99/month Starting at $55/month Starting at $50/month
Xfinity vs. AT&T Internet

Comparing Xfinity to AT&T, you can see that Xfinity is the winner when it comes to affordable base prices. However, as maximum speeds increase, that gap starts to close quickly. In fact, for speeds over 200Mbps, Xfinity is generally more expensive than AT&T. Both ISPs offer fiber internet that can potentially reach over 1Gbps; however, the astronomical prices of those plans make them not worth it at all. Most homes don't even need the 1Gbps speeds offered by both ISPs, but at least the prices for those plans are below $100/month.

If your choice is between AT&T's DSL and Xfinity cable, you should probably lean towards Xfinity. Its cable connection is more reliable than AT&T's DSL. However, if you are looking at a fiber connection, AT&T's fiber internet offers more competitive prices.

Xfinity vs. Charter Spectrum

Charter Spectrum is another one of the largest internet companies in the country. Unlike Xfinity, Charter does not offer fiber internet. However, Spectrum's cable can reach 1Gbps download speeds, but the connection will not be as reliable, nor will it provide symmetrical upload speeds like fiber can. We always recommend fiber over cable, but Charter's services are not a bad alternative if you don't want to pay Xfinity's high fiber prices.

While Xfinity has a lower base price, Charter Spectrum is cheaper when comparing similar plans (with similar speeds).

Xfinity Bundles

On top of being one of the biggest internet providers, Xfinity is also one of the largest cable TV providers. That means Xfinity offers several internet and TV bundles. You can even bundle landline phone service with its internet and TV services.

While not technically a bundle, Xfinity also includes a free Xfinity Flex 4K streaming device with its internet plans. This device is a great bonus for those who do not want cable TV but would rather access popular TV streaming services. On top of that, Xfinity also gives internet customers a subscription to Peacock Premium (subscriptions for other streaming services not included).

Xfinity Internet customers are also eligible to purchase an Xfinity Mobile plan. Xfinity Mobile sells discount cell phone service (including mobile hotspot) on the Verizon network, giving its customers a great avenue to save on their phone bill.

Recap: Is Xfinity Internet Right for You?

If you are in an area where Xfinity is available, there's a good chance it’s one of only a few options for internet service. This small pool of options will make comparison shopping easy, but it also means you don't have very many choices. Still, is Xfinity the right choice even if the pickings are slim?

If you compare Xfinity to DSL providers, we recommend going with Xfinity. Its cable or fiber connections are going to be faster and more reliable. On the other hand, if you compare Xfinity against another cable company, you might get better speeds for less from the competitor. The same applies when comparing Xfinity's fiber plans against similar plans from other ISPs.
